Tariff negotiations begin tomorrow, key goal is no tariffs on Malaysia: Tengku Zafrul

By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will begin reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States (US) on Tuesday, with the main objective of ensuring that no tariffs are imposed on the country, especially in key sectors, said Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz ( pic ). He said the negotiations will be held virtually, led by Deputy Secretary-General (Trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa as Malaysia's chief negotiator, alongside the Assistant US Trade Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Sarah Ellerman. He noted that the initial discussions aim to determine the scope and technical issues that need to be addressed to reach a mutually beneficial outcome. "In our discussions with the US administration, we stated that the objective is not merely to reduce tariffs, but we want to eliminate them altogether, if possible, with no tariffs imposed on our country. "In the upcoming negotiations, we will uphold that goal. At the very least, we aim to reduce tariffs, but our main priority is to avoid them entirely, particularly in key sectors," he said at a press conference after the special Dewan Rakyat sitting on the US tariff issue today. On April 24, Tengku Zafrul led a high-level delegation to Washington for talks with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The meeting emphasised the importance of continuous dialogue and Malaysia's readiness to find constructive solutions to issues raised by the US. Tengku Zafrul noted that the US has outlined four main areas of concern: trade imbalance, non-tariff barriers (as highlighted in the National Trade Estimate Report), technology safeguarding, and investment-related issues. "From their perspective, the trade imbalance — essentially a trade deficit — is viewed negatively. According to their data, the US recorded a US$25 billion trade deficit with Malaysia," he said. He added that the US also raised concerns over several non-tariff barriers, which they believe can be improved. On technology safeguarding, Tengku Zafrul explained that the US wants to ensure its technologies are not accessed by unauthorised parties. Tengku Zafrul Aziz denied having discussions for a by-election to pave the way for him to become Selangor menteri besar. PETALING JAYA : Tengku Zafrul Aziz has dismissed speculation of an impending by-election in Selangor to pave the way for him to become menteri besar. Tengku Zafrul, who is investment, trade and industry minister, said no such discussions for a by-election had taken place and it was never a factor in his decision to quit Umno. 'I do not support triggering by-elections without urgent necessity as they incur time and public funds,' he said in a statement. Tengku Zafrul announced his decision to resign as an Umno member, as well as from all party posts, on May 30. He also expressed his intention to join PKR. Tengku Zafrul today said he would continue carrying out his responsibilities until the end of this year. 'As for my position as a minister, I leave this entirely to the discretion of the prime minister. I remain ready to serve the nation in any capacity.' He also reaffirmed that his decision to leave Umno was entirely his own and made without coercion. 'In a democratic society, every individual has the right to make personal choices. I deeply appreciate all the feedback and acceptance extended to me in response to this decision,' Tengku Zafrul said. There has been much speculation over his fate as minister as his final term as senator expires at the end of the year. Also, there is talk of a Cabinet reshuffle following the resignation of Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from their respective ministerial posts. In a Facebook video previously, former Umno leader Isham Jalil claimed that Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari would be ordered to vacate his Sungai Tua seat to allow Tengku Zafrul to contest in the by-election. Winning the by-election could then allow Tengku Zafrul to take over as menteri besar, as speculated previously, while Amirudin could join Anwar's Cabinet as he is also the Gombak MP at present. Amirudin has also denied speculation that he is set to vacate his state seat to make way for Tengku Zafrul, describing it as just empty talk based on the 'wild imagination' of certain individuals who were seeking to spread that narrative via social media. The PKR vice-president also said he did not want to see a repeat of the 'Kajang Move' in 2014, which culminated in the late Abdul Khalid Ibrahim resigning as the then Selangor menteri besar. FMT quoted political analyst James Chin as saying that any move to get Amirudin to vacate his seat to make way for Tengku Zafrul would damage PKR's image in the eyes of voters and grassroots members.

TikTok to increase investment in UK, create 500 jobs

(AFP pic) LONDON : TikTok plans to raise its investment in the UK, its biggest community in Europe, with the creation of 500 more jobs, the Chinese-owned social media giant announced today. The news coincided with the start of London's Tech Week, which sees British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcoming some of sector's biggest firms. 'TikTok's UK workforce will grow to 3,000 this year with the addition of more than 500 jobs,' the company said in a statement. It added that it was investing in a new London office, set to open next year, and whose size will dwarf its current UK head office. It will take TikTok's investment in UK infrastructure to around £140 million, the group said. Around half the UK population, more than 30 million people, use TikTok each month, making it the platform's 'largest user-community in Europe', the statement added. 'Whether through direct investment in jobs and innovation, or the wider economic contribution from millions of British businesses on TikTok, we're pleased to be increasing our investment and presence here in the UK,' said Adam Presser, director of TikTok UK and global head of operations and trust and safety. TikTok has been in the crosshairs of western governments for years over fears personal data could be used by China for espionage or propaganda purposes. 'What underpins our continued growth is our deep commitment to safety and to creating an enjoyable and secure digital space to sustainably support creators, entrepreneurs and the wider economy, which is why we also invest significantly in safety,' Presser added today.
