Baghdad's "City of Gold" to Become Major Economic Engine

By John Lee.
The City of Gold project in Baghdad, recently approved by Iraq's Minister of Trade and endorsed by the Ministerial Council for the Economy, has been hailed by the Trade and Economic Research Centre (TREC) as a transformational initiative that could significantly reshape the country's economic landscape.
Dr. Mudhhir Mohammed Saleh, Financial Advisor to the Prime Minister, described the project as a strategic move to position Baghdad as a regional hub for gold and jewellery manufacturing and trade. He emphasised Iraq's geographic location and artisanal heritage as key advantages that the project will leverage.
The planned city will feature advanced gold-processing factories, design workshops, marketing centres, vocational training facilities, and gold-testing laboratories. Dr. Saleh said the initiative could generate thousands of jobs for young Iraqis and artisans, enabling the country to shift from being a consumer market to a centre of gold production and export.
Seen as part of Iraq's broader economic diversification strategy, the City of Gold aims to reduce reliance on oil and foster the growth of the private sector, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises. It is also expected to support financial stability by creating alternative income streams grounded in local industry.
TREC called on the Ministries of Education and Higher Education to align academic and vocational programmes with the technical needs of such transformative projects, equipping young Iraqis with the skills to succeed in the emerging labour market.

Govt Approves Incentives for Basra Housing Projects

By John Lee. The Iraqi Cabinet has approved a series of incentives for the developers of Basra/1 and Basra/2 residential projects. For Basra/1, the developer has been exempted from the standard 10 percent deduction representing the landowner's share. The company is also authorised to sell units at open market prices. Additionally, it is permitted to construct vertical residential units on up to 10% of the land area, subject to approval from the Ministry of Transport, Civil Aviation Authority, and Baghdad Municipality. In exchange, the company will donate 2,000 housing units. In Basra/2, similar terms have been approved, including the construction of vertical housing units on no more than 10% of the land, in return for the donation of 1,000 housing units. This is in addition to the 4,000 units already stipulated in the investment contract. The project is also exempt from the 10% landowner's share, pending approval of the rerouted fourth ring road by relevant sectoral authorities. The Cabinet has further directed all government entities owning property within the project boundaries to transfer ownership to the National Investment Commission (NIC). This includes 122 dunams currently under the ownership of the University of Baghdad (Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research). To facilitate the transfer, the Cabinet has amended its previous decision No. 24390 of 2024, requiring the Ministry of Finance to provide the University with a replacement plot of equivalent size. Iraqi Logistics: EQIQ Launches Boxy with $1.5m Pre-Seed Investment

By John Lee. EQIQ, a UAE-based venture capital fund, has unveiled its $1.5 million pre-seed investment in Boxy, which it says is Iraq's first AI-powered logistics aggregator. Boxy aims to unify over 1,500 last-mile couriers into a single intelligent platform, addressing the fragmented logistics landscape in Iraq. EQIQ says Boxy has demonstrated early product-market fit, with consistent high double-digit growth and a recent 100% month-on-month increase in merchant adoption. Emerging from stealth after a year of development, Boxy was co-founded in 2024 by Ahmed Baqer (CEO, picutred left) and Mehrshad Pezeshk (CTO, pictured right), in partnership with EQIQ. Baqer brings over a decade of experience scaling operationally intensive startups such as Careem Iraq and Northladder, while Pezeshk has over 15 years of experience building and exiting tech-driven logistics ventures in the Middle East and North America. According to a press release, EQIQ's greenfield approach positions it as a co-founder of Boxy, providing not just capital but also strategic, operational, and infrastructural support from its Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) headquarters. Mohamed Al-Hakim, Founding Partner at EQIQ, said: "Logistics is the backbone of the daily operations of the tech ecosystem ... Boxy offers a tech-enabled, AI-powered logistics platform that helps merchants scale their businesses. By pairing our resources and networks with exceptional founders with 25+ years of sector expertise, we've built a venture designed to reshape how parcels move across Iraq and, soon, beyond." Boxy's platform uses a proprietary AI-matching engine to assign shipments to the most suitable courier, cutting merchant onboarding time from weeks to hours. Its service streamlines delivery operations by replacing multiple courier dashboards with a single unified interface. The new investment will be used to deepen Boxy's technology stack and expand its operations across Baghdad and other major cities, laying groundwork for a scalable digital infrastructure that supports Iraq's e-commerce and fintech sectors.
