Viral: "RoboCop" directing traffic in Shanghai amazes global netizens
Humans are making progress in developing AI and robots every single day. It's ironic that the beings are fascinated and engaged in the creation of something that they will train to take their place and potentially jobs.
Point in case, robot cops, who have gone viral across the globe for directing traffic on the streets of Shanghai.
A video of the "Robocop" dressed like a police officer giving directions at an intersection has gone viral on social media. A humanoid robot named Xiao Hu, sporting an oversized white helmet, LED tube lighting and reflective yellow fabric, was seen giving instructions to pedestrians in the streets of the Huangpu District of Shanghai on Wednesday evening.
The voice instructions being given by the Robocop included "red light, please stop," and standard hand signals to direct foot traffic across the intersection. All of its physical movements and verbal commands have been modelled according to the Chinese traffic policing practices, making it act just like a human police officer. Along with directing traffic, the Robocop can also help pedestrians with directions and answer basic enquiries about traffic laws.

The robot nicknamed "Little Tiger" marks a trial phase rather than an official deployment, according to the Shanghai Public Security Bureau's Traffic Management Department. The department said the robot's appearance was part of a "real-world learning exercise for traffic management scenarios."
Developed over four years, Xiao Hu is still undergoing testing. However, officials are eager to eventually use the Robocop to replace humans in heavily trafficked areas or during large-scale events.

42k Maha Card Rides in a Day: Digital Surge Ahead of Metro's Open-Loop Upgrade
Nagpur: MahaMetro's digital push is paying off, with a record-breaking 42,257 commuters using Maha Cards on August 5 — the highest single-day usage since the system was launched in 2019. The number accounted for 39% of Nagpur Metro 's daily ridership, which stood at 1.07 lakh that day. Digital ticketing as a whole also hit a new milestone, with 56% of commuters opting for cashless travel via Maha Cards, QR codes, and mobile apps. Officials said the spike signals a major behavioural shift among daily riders towards faster, more convenient travel. The Maha Card, a co-branded contactless smart card developed in partnership with State Bank of India, has been the backbone of Nagpur Metro's cashless journey since Phase 1. Currently, over 1.10 lakh passengers hold active Maha Cards, with an average of two new cards issued daily per station. Commuters benefit from fare concessions of 10% for regular passengers and 30% for students, making it a preferred option. The latest surge follows Maha Metro's recent promotional drive launched on July 25, offering free Maha Cards with a Rs200 recharge. The campaign has already led to the distribution of more than 1,300 new cards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo This record comes at a time the Maha Card is set to evolve. As part of Phase 2 of the Nagpur Metro project, Maha Metro is preparing to shift to a Rs154 crore Open Loop Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system. Unlike the current closed-loop Maha Card, which works only within the Nagpur Metro network, the upcoming system will support National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC). The NCMC system will allow seamless, interoperable travel across metros, buses, and other public transport systems in India. EMV-based and bank-issued, these cards will function like debit cards, enabling commuters to use a single card across cities and modes of transport. Maha Metro has already floated a tender for the supply, installation, and commissioning of the new system, which also includes QR code-based ticketing and a long-term maintenance contract. Importantly, officials said existing AFC gates installed in Phase 1 stations won't require replacement; only a software upgrade will be needed to support the new format. "Even the existing Maha Cards may continue after the rollout of the NCMC cards. However, the open-loop card system is still in its early stages, so it's too soon to say exactly how it will work out. If possible, we'll integrate the new system by upgrading the existing AFC infrastructure to support both old and new cards. Otherwise, we may have to phase out the old cards and issue new ones to commuters. However, nothing is final at this point, as the entire process is still at a preliminary stage," said a Maha Metro official. As Maha Card usage peaks, the city's metro commuters are already riding the wave of digital convenience — and the next upgrade promises to take that a step further, far beyond city limits.

Latest tariffs to impact half of auto component exports to US
President Donald Trump 's decision to raise tariff on imports from India to 50% is set to impact nearly half of the country's $7-billion, or about ₹61,000-crore, annual auto parts exports to the US, senior industry executives said. The US was already levying a 25% duty on cars, small trucks and their parts from all countries since May 3, while the tariff on components for commercial vehicles, earth-moving equipment and tractors was 10%, a senior executive told ET. The US is the largest destination for Indian auto parts, accounting for about 32% of total shipments from the country in FY25. Live Events India does not export vehicles to the US. India levies customs duty of 5-15% on auto parts imported from the US. Trump had initially said higher tariffs would push companies to set up manufacturing in the US, creating jobs. His latest move, however, comes in retaliation to India's oil imports from Russia. He claimed Indian oil imports from Russia are undermining US National Security and foreign policy amid the ongoing national emergency related to Russia's actions in Ukraine.

Can't tax cars from military canteens at mkt price, govt told
Panaji: The Goa human rights commission has recommended that the transport department takes steps to ensure that vehicles purchased by personnel of the Indian armed forces are charged taxes based on the cost of the vehicle as paid when purchasing from the canteen store department, and not on the market price. In its inquiry report on Wednesday, the commission recommended that the transport department refund the excess amount charged to the commanding officer of 1 Goa battalion NCC, Jesus Furtado, when he purchased a new Maruti Brezza from the ministry of defence. Furtado, in his complaint to the commission, stated that he paid Rs 8,73,802 to purchase the Brezza from the ministry of defence in Dec 2024, which was a military canteen discounted price, a privilege given to the Indian armed forces by govt. He stated that when he went to the Margao RTO office to pay registration and taxes, he was charged based on the market price of Rs 9,45,778, as opposed to the actual price he paid. He filed a complaint seeking a refund of the excess amount paid. The transport department stated that taxes are collected as per the homologation price frozen in the computer system by the vehicle manufacturer. The department stated that it will place Furtado's demands before govt for exemption of taxes on vehicles purchased from the military canteen. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NewTrailers Built to Last — Ready When You Are carxplore Shop Now Undo The commission's acting chairperson, Desmond D'Costa, and member, Pramod Kamat, stated that they agreed with Furtado that as per govt notification in the official gazette dated March 1, 2024, taxes are to be paid on the cost of the vehicle. 'Merely because in the computer system in the RTO office, the homologation price was frozen by the manufacturer/dealer, the complainant could not be charged the tax on the said homologation price,' the commission stated. It found that the transport department wasn't able to produce any provision of law in support of its defence and stated that Furtado is entitled to a refund of the excess amount paid.
