More wheelchair events at ATP & WTA tournaments in 2026
While the specific events have not yet been confirmed, the ITF said a "significant number" of new ones will take place at ATP and WTA tournaments, creating a calendar including "higher standards" and "elevated prize money".
The four Grand Slams currently have both wheelchair and non-wheelchair events, in addition to six ATP and and WTA tournaments.
Great Britain's Alfie Hewett - a 33-time Grand Slam champion across singles and doubles - said the expansion presents a "great opportunity for players to take their careers to the next level".
World number two Hewett, who was beaten by Tokito Oda in the Wimbledon wheelchair singles final, added: "Now is the time to take the chance to grow our sport even further and make integrated events the norm rather than the exception."
The ITF's president, David Haggerty, said the governing body was "building on the success of the small number of existing integrated events to create a tour that is even more effective in enhancing the careers of professional and aspiring players."
From 2026, the wheelchair tennis tour will be split into three tiers: Premier, International and Development.
The Premier Tier is the highest level, with tournaments to be graded as Grand Slam or Masters events, or 1000, 500 and 250 as per ATP and WTA events.

Roger Black says the 28-year wait for the Great Britain's men's 4x400m relay squad to get their gold medals from the 1997 World Athletics Championships "affected" the team but it was "special" to finally receive them. Englishmen Black, Richardson and Hylton plus Welsh duo Thomas and Baulch were belatedly presented with their gold medals at Saturday's Diamond League meeting at a sold-out London Stadium. "It's been hanging over us for a very, very long time. I mean, 28 years is a long time so yesterday really completed it. It was great," added Black. "In some ways, it was more special because we were there with our families and our kids, who obviously weren't born back then. "I think Jamie had a baby then but we were able to share it with our families and you don't get to do that, do you? "Also, more importantly, we shared it with 60,000 British fans in there and a lot of them supported us back in the day. "I think pulling that together, it was actually a surprisingly emotional moment and we loved it. It was really special." Cherry Alexander, UK Athletics' strategic lead for major events, said: "We're proud to be able to give these athletes their moment in front of a home crowd. "It's a chance to recognise not just their talent, but the values they stood for. This medal means even more because of how long they've waited for it."

Shapovalov reels in Mifel Tennis Open men's singles title with straight-sets victory
LOS CABOS - The tropical area at the tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula is best known for its beaches, resorts and sport fishing. Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., reeled in a big catch of his own Saturday with a victory in the men's singles final of the Mifel Tennis Open in one hour 11 minutes. Shapovalov defeated seventh-seeded American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 6-2 to win the ATP 250 event at the Cabo Sports Complex. The first set took only 35 minutes to complete. Shapovalov led most categories in the final. He had six aces, won 20 points while receiving, won three games in a row, and won nine service games. He had one less unforced error (23-22) than his opponent. Kovacevic had two aces, two double faults, and won six service games. The 26-year-old Shapovalov won the Dallas Open in February, and now has three career ATP titles. He advanced to Saturday's championship match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Australian Adam Walton in the semifinals. Kovacevic upset the top-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the other semifinal. Shapovalov will be one of the featured Canadians at the 2025 National Bank Open in Toronto, which gets underway on Saturday, July 26. WASHINGTON - Venus Williams is making her highly anticipated comeback to tour-level tennis at the D.C. Open, more than a year after her last match. The 45-year-old accepted a wildcard into the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi D.C. This marks her first competitive tournament since the Miami Open in March 2024 and her first main draw match since 2023. Williams holds seven Grand Slam singles championships, 14 women's doubles majors with sister Serena, and four Olympic gold medals. Fans are ecstatic to see the Grand Slam legend play after her 16-month hiatus, even if a deep run is unlikely. Williams is currently listed as "inactive" on the WTA website and has continued to succeed despite dealing with Sjögren's syndrome since 2011.
