Carlisle United chiefs bank on 'period of stability' under Hughes
Nigel Clibbens said this summer was the right time to have continuity rather than more upheaval.
Hughes is set to lead Carlisle into the 2025/26 National League season having initially taken charge in February.
The experienced head coach agreed to remain at the helm this summer and Clibbens believes this is what United needed, after a 2024/25 relegation campaign when they had three different bosses.
'It's always a balance between change, and continuity and cohesion,' said Clibbens on big decisions at the tip.
'Because the reality of it is, whenever you change anything, it can be very, very disruptive.
'It's not like normal business, where people come and go, and life goes on.
'You change people in a football club, and it has ripple effects.
'So this is why, when you're changing head coaches and stuff, it's big, because it's not just one person – you end up with lots of people going.

'So we recognised that we needed a period of stability, so we're really pleased that Mark stayed.'
Clibbens added that things have been 'very positive' at the club so far this summer, where Hughes' retention has come alongside changes in other areas.
The head coach lost assistant Glyn Hodges and replaced him with first-team coaches Frankie McAvoy and Gavin Skelton, as Jamie Devitt returned to the academy coaching set-up.
Other behind-the-scenes changes have seen Marc Tierney's arrival as head of football operations, in place of sporting director Rob Clarkson, and Martin Foyle replacing Greg Abbott as head of recruitment.
Carlisle are currently coming to the end of a week-long training camp in south Wales, with the Blues preparing for their third pre-season friendly – and their first friendly open to fans – at AFC Fylde on Saturday.
That is followed by further trips to South Shields, Harrogate Town and Chester before the league season kicks off at Woking on August 9.

Eddie Howe ‘confident' of keeping ‘irreplaceable' Alexander Isak at Newcastle
Eddie Howe is 'desperate' for 'irreplaceable' Alexander Isak to stay at Newcastle United and is confident that he will, even if the head coach admitted he could offer no guarantees about the future of any player. Isak was left out of Newcastle's squad for their 4-0 pre-season friendly defeat at Celtic on Saturday, despite being fit, with Howe insisting the decision was led by the need to manage the 25-year-old's fitness. Advertisement Yet, unlike Joelinton, whose minutes are also being managed and watched from the stands at Celtic Park, Howe made the call to send Isak home due to 'the speculation' and 'scrutiny' around the striker's future. Liverpool have communicated their interest in signing Isak this summer, but Arne Slot's side are in negotiations with Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike, who had also been targeted by Newcastle. Howe insisted there has been 'no formal approach' for Isak this summer, and says everyone at the club is 'desperate' to keep the Sweden international. 'Absolutely,' Howe said. 'There is no one who feels any differently – from board to staff to players. We value his qualities, as a person, so it's very strong. 'I'd say we have a few of those players that are irreplaceable. Your top players are so hard to find, so hard to recruit, so hard to develop and make them into those players. 'When you have them, you have to treasure them, and we and the staff recognise his talent and his ability. Of course, we're desperate to keep him part of our team.' Asked directly if Isak would still be a Newcastle player come the start of the season, Howe said: 'I think it's difficult for me to ever give 100 per cent clarity on any player. 'I'd never do that because it's football and you never know what could happen. 'All I can say is that Alex is happy at Newcastle. He loves the players that he plays with, the staff, the team. I've never had any issue with him, other than really enjoying seeing his talent and seeing him express himself. 'Certainly, I'm confident that he's going to be here at the start of the season.' Addressing the absences of Isak and Joelinton against Celtic, Howe added: 'Both players are fit, but we just felt they weren't ready to play. 'Everyone through pre-season goes through challenges. Joe is coming back from a long injury, so we have to make sure that when he's introduced, he's ready. Alex has trained this week and is fine, but we didn't want to take the risk with him.' Advertisement Isak, though, did not travel from Newcastle's five-day training camp in Austria to Glasgow, as Joelinton did. 'No (you shouldn't read anything into Isak not being here), it's purely the last thing Alex wants if he is not playing is to be sat in the stand, being under that scrutiny,' Howe said. 'I don't that's fair to the player so if he wasn't going to play today, which we agreed, which we mutually agreed that he needs a little bit more training time, then it's best he's not here. 'For any player, that is not an easy thing to deal with. 'It's not an easy thing to understand when you're fielding, no doubt from his perspective, phone calls, text messages, players and people asking him… because the media now is so strong and the media message goes far and wide and that scrutiny in part, that's 10 per cent of the reason why he wasn't here because I just want him to focus on himself and his training ready for next week.' Howe also did not deny that he has held discussions with Isak regarding his future during the off-season, but stressed he does so with all players and that the Swede has been focused in training. 'I have conversations with I'd say 100 per cent of the players and their futures,' he said. 'I'm very communicative with them, so whether that's at the end of the season, whether that's during pre-season so yes, I've had discussions with him but that's not abnormal. 'I respect a player's career and how short it is. All the time I will be communicating my desires and wishes to them and what I see and try to help them. 'Alex has been really good, he's trained really well so far this season so I know there will be lots of noise round it and I can't really control that but from inside he's been really good.' Newcastle travel to Singapore and South Korea for a pre-season tour later this week and Howe 'absolutely' expects Isak to head to East Asia and be involved in friendlies against Arsenal, a K-League Select XI and Tottenham Hotspur. Advertisement Although Newcastle are trying to bring in a goalkeeper, centre-back and forward, Howe admitted that Newcastle have 'missed out on our targets to other clubs on several occasions' so far this summer and, as things stand, it does not seem as if any further additions are imminent. Anthony Elanga is their only senior signing and he made his debut as a half-time substitute against Celtic. 'We wanted more and from my perspective going into pre-season you want your squad together from the first day to work on everything you need to work on,' Howe said. 'I'm confident we will try our very, very best to do it. Beyond that I've got no guarantees.'

‘Arsenal are not his destination' – Liverpool move into pole position for Real Madrid star
Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes remains the most likely big-name departure from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, but there is still little clarity on where the Brazilian could end up. The Premier League seems his most likely destination, but there is not the plethora of options one might imagine for a player of his talent. The 24-year-old maintained a star billing at the start of last season in spite of the arrival of Kylian Mbappe, but as the season went on, his influence waned. After being taken off during the Copa del Rey final at half-time, he did not play again until the first game of the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal. Despite providing an assist for Gonzalo Garcia Torres, it remains his only start in their last 11 matches. Arsenal ruled out of move for Rodrygo Arsenal were consistently the side most closely linked with Rodrygo over the last couple of months. After moves for Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres though, the Gunners were cast as much less likely to move for Rodrygo, and now Cadena SER report that Arsenal definitively will not be his destination this summer. Image via Getty Images Liverpool his most likely destination Now it appears Liverpool are currently the side most likely to move for Rodrygo. The Reds are currently in pursuit of Hugo Ekitike after signing Florian Wirtz for big money, but if a deal for Luis Diaz to be sold can be orchestrated, they would have more room on the left for a star attacker, and more money to sign one with. Price tag for Rodrygo Prices between €80m and €100m have been quoted for Rodrygo in recent weeks, but increasingly Real Madrid are in a poor negotiating position. The Brazil international seems not to have a place in the starting XI with Xabi Alonso, and he would be an expensive substitute, who would be unhappy with a residual role. With few other destinations on the table, Liverpool may be able to negotiate a lower fee.
