Aberdeen 0-2 Celtic player ratings: The class act, three 8/10s, morale-sapped forward and 4/10 toilers
The defending champions were well worth the three points in the north-east, with goals from Benjamin Nygren and Reo Hatate clinching the win.
The opening exchanges were tentative before Celtic took the lead on 27 minutes. Kieran Tierney managed to get past Nicolas Milanovic down the left flank and he cut the ball back to Nygren, who had timed his run into the penalty box perfectly and he finished past a helpless Dimitar Mitov.
Aberdeen's best chance had come from Adil Aouchiche from distance before the opener and Celtic went in deserved leaders at the interval.
Daizen Maeda tested out Mitov from distance early in the second period, with the Dons trying to find a way back into the match without creating much at all.
However, Celtic bagged the all-important second goal on 66 minutes. Nygren fed the ball into Hatate at the edge of the penalty box and he curled a sumptuous effort in off the underside of the crossbar to make it 2-0.
Celtic saw out the game comfortably thereafter and lead Old Firm rivals Rangers by four points at this already early point of the season.

Deriving maximum points from both games suggests that the rest of the league should take notice of Derek McInnes' new-look side. Indeed, belief at Riccarton is that this team will simply grow in strength and stature in the weeks ahead. Defender Stuart Findlay is, not to put too fine a point on it, absolutely loving life since joining Hearts on loan from Oxford United. Four goals in his first give games is only part of the reason. After scoring twice in Sunday's 3-2 win at Tannadice Park, including a dramatic 94th-minute winner, the 29-year-old left Dundee surfing an emotional wave. Both those commodities were vital to Sunday's success as the visitors overhauled a 2-1 half-time deficit to earn an exhilarating victory. 'When I signed, obviously you have played against a few guys here [while on loan at Kilmarnock] and you know what they're like on the pitch,' said Findlay. 'You don't really know what they're like off the pitch, but the changing-room is absolutely brilliant. We've got boys coming from all over the world. Guys like Kyzi [Alexandros Kyziridis] - I never thought I'd be friends with a guy from Greece but we hit it off really early. 'You get these friendships with guys you'd never usually be put together with. You don't win games of football like that if you've not got that unity in the changing-room. As I said, I think we're only going to get stronger. We're only going to get to know each other better on and off the pitch, and I'm excited for what's going to happen going forward. 'In the first half on Sunday we probably had the majority of the play, but we knew ourselves that there was a lot to improve on. We weren't overly happy with the two goals we lost. We needed to do better in certain situations, but we knew they would tire. We knew how hard they had worked on Thursday night [against Rapid Vienna in Europe] and we had to use that to our advantage. We knew set-pieces were going to be pivotal. So to pop up with that, obviously, I'm delighted it was me but we didn't care who it was. The first goal is probably the best header I have scored technically. The second one, just as soon as I saw the ball coming in, I gambled on the front-post run and luckily enough I got a good connection on it. The rest is history, as they say. I didn't realise how late it was in the game. That made it a lot easier when you looked up at the clock and you didn't need to defend for long after that. But it was a special moment and I'm buzzing.' This is still very much an embryonic Hearts side. Recent signings like Tomas Magnusson, Sabah Kerjota and Pierre Landry Kabore have yet to make any kind of impact. Findlay candidly acknowledged that more improvement is needed, and that the two league performances contained rough edges needing smoothed. 'We would be the first to admit that. On Sunday, nobody is going to say it was the most vintage 90 minutes. I think we were the better team, we deserved to win, but if you can add the quality we've got to that resilience and never-say-die attitude, we'll be able to win games ugly sometimes. 'We know what we can improve on, we know it's only getting better the longer we play, the longer we gel. Tannadice is a hard place to go to. They finished fourth last year for a reason. So to get three points is a massive victory. Aberdeen and Dundee United hasn't been the easiest start in the world so to start with six points, it's a testament to the squad.' Findlay won a penalty-kick from a corner for Lawrence Shankland to open the scoring, then headed home two further corners to secure the win. 'We've got quality in abundance in the right areas,' he explained. 'They've brought in these new players for a reason. When the games are tight, you've got guys that can produce moments of quality. I'm the one that maybe grabs the headlines, putting the ball in the net, but I need the ball put on my head to start with. I think it's a team effort and, as I said, I'm just lucky enough to be the one sitting here reaping the rewards of the double.' Has he worked on heading in attacking areas? 'If you'd watched me over the last couple of years, you wouldn't say that! I think I've scored two in the last two seasons. It's not something I'm known for but I said after I scored my first one that it's something I want to add to my game. That's me on four already for the season. Me and Halks [Craig Halkett] sort of have a little joke with each other, to see who can get the most goals out of a competition. 'It started after the controversy of the Stirling Albion goal, but yeah, that's me two ahead of him now. Obviously it's something we're working on as a team, but my bread and butter is keeping them out at the other end. The two goals we lost on Sunday brought us back down to earth and we know there are things we need to improve on, but I'll take my goals when they come. They don't happen too often.' Halkett was credited with that goal at Stirling and Findlay is no longer arguing the case. 'I'll give Halks that one, I got two on Sunday,' he smiled.

Ex-Celtic boss facing BANKRUPTCY after racking up huge unpaid debts of £1.5million

Despite a glorious playing career his spell at Celtic didn't go well and since retiring from playing he has multiple run-ins with HMRC. It was filed close to two months after it emerged Barnes had racked up more than £1.5 million in debts at his media company, John Barnes Media Limited. That included almost £800,000 due to HMRC. The most recent liquidators' report on his media firm showed he owed HMRC £776,878 in unpaid VAT, NI and PAYE. The 61-year-old was banned from being a company director for more than three-and-a-half years in 2024, after his company failed to pay more than £78,000 in corporation tax between August 2018 and January 2020. And the business was found to have failed to pay nearly £200,000 in corporation tax and VAT combined during that 18-month period, following a report by the Insolvency Agency. Barnes also owed unsecured creditors £461,849, a directors loan worth £226,000, and liquidators' costs amounting to £56,535. The cult hero winger, who won two league titles and two FA Cups at Anfield, has staved off multiple previous bankruptcy petitions since 2010. He last avoided going bust in May 2023 after settling a personal-tax bill of more than £200,000. Another petition lodged against him was dismissed in court later that same year. Mike Smith, chief investigator at the Insolvency Service, said: "Individuals and businesses not paying the tax they should deprives the Government of the funding it needs to provide vital public services and investment in areas such as schools, hospitals and roads. "John Barnes had a legal duty to ensure his company paid the correct amount of corporation tax and VAT. Instead, it paid no tax whatsoever between November 2018 and October 2020, despite receiving earnings of well over £400,000. "This disqualification should serve as a deterrent to other directors that if you do not pay your taxes while directing money elsewhere, you are at risk of being banned." Barnes, who had an ill-fated spell as Celtic manager between 1999 and 2000, set up his media business in 2012. He also managed Jamaica and Tranmere Rovers and has appeared as a pundit since hanging up his boots. Between November 2018 and October 2020 (the period in which close to £200,000 of unpaid debt to HMRC was accrued), the company had a turnover of £441,798. The Insolvency Service said nothing was paid to HMRC in tax during that period, despite the company filing returns showing what the VAT payments should have been. An investigation found that not only had the company failed to pay £78,839 in that period but also failed to pay £115,272 in VAT between February 2019 and 2020. The company ceased trading in January 2020 and it later entered liquidation. Barnes has previously declared he "doesn't like dealing with taxes". He admitted so to The Telegraph back in 2009 after he saw a bankruptcy order against him rescinded following what he called a "tax oversight". Barnes said then: "I don't like dealing with taxes of course. "I just hate not having enough money. Apart from that, I don't like dealing with bills and never have done. I let my wife Andrea deal with them. I don't even like opening them. A few times my credit card has been declined when I've been travelling abroad. "Then I have to get creative about paying the bill and have to really root around. That's much more satisfying than just having it come easily." Kieran Tierney gets early POTY tip as returning Celtic star already forming 'unstoppable' partnership with Hoops pal
Tierney clinched his dream return to his boyhood club earlier this summer after six years away from Glasgow's east end Kieran Tierney will lap up the player of the year awards at Celtic this season if he can keep himself fit. That's according to former Scotland hero Pat Nevin, who is tipping the full back to form an 'unstoppable' partnership with Daizen Maeda down the Hoops' left. Ex Hibs and Chelsea star Nevin told football betting site BetVictor: "If Kieran Tierney stays fit, will he be the player of the season. I mean, he looked that for 45, 55 minutes at home, and he was fully fit for the first hour of the game. "He was dynamite, down the left-hand side. was a left winger, he was a left back, left midfield. "He had a brilliant understanding of last year's best player. "With Daizen Maeda, if they play on the left-hand side together, in terms of Scottish football, they will be unstoppable if he stays fit. No one will stop them. "They will put in cross after cross after cross, they will get into brilliant positions with great game awareness and intelligence. "They've already set up a brilliant partnership on that left-hand side and I know what it's like if you're a wide player, the most important player on the pitch for the guy behind you. "You have to have an understanding of it and you hope he's good, I played with some good ones over here, Stevie Clark being one of them. When you have that, you can destroy teams. "You absolutely destroy teams. They will do that. "If Kieran stays fit, it's not a matter of if he could be the player of the year, it's that he will be."
