Irular family of 10 rescued from bonded labour in Tamil Nadu's Vikravandi
According to sources, the National Adivasi Solidarity Council (NASC) had alerted senior officials earlier this week after receiving information about the family's plight. A field-level verification by the council confirmed the presence of bonded labourers at the site.
Acting swiftly, the matter was escalated to the Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Justice Jaichandran. Subsequently, a coordinated team comprising the RDO, District Labour Welfare Officer, Vikravandi Tahsildar, and personnel from Kandamangalam police station conducted a late-night operation on Tuesday to rescue the family. The team also lodged a complaint with the police against the kiln owner, identified as K Palani.
Official sources said the family had borrowed Rs 50,000 from the kiln owner two years ago and had continued working at the kiln despite having repaid the amount through labour. The owner allegedly forced them to remain in bondage, claiming compounded interest had pushed the debt to Rs 1 lakh.
Speaking to TNIE, NASC Secretary K Krishnan said, 'We received a tip-off from a source, and it was heartening to witness the swift convergence of various government departments — including the judiciary, revenue, and police — working together to secure the family's release within 24 hours. This shows that if the system truly works for the marginalised, it can bring light into many lives.'
The rescued family has since been sent back to their native village in Cuddalore. However, the kiln owner is yet to be remanded, officials said.

"They also claimed that the suspects involved in the money laundering case had tapped his phone," he said. "The suspects then promised to settle the matter and asked for money from the techie. 11 die on way back from Gangasagar as bus rams truck in Burdwan
Burdwan: Eleven people died and 36 others were injured after the bus they were travelling in rammed into a stationary trailer truck on NH-19 near Fagupur crossing in East Burdwan around 7 am on Friday. Doctors said several among those injured, including the bus driver, are critical. Police have confiscated both vehicles and have registered an FIR alleging that the trailer truck was parked illegally on the highway. The driver of the trailer truck fled the scene of the accident and is yet to be found. Ten of the 11 bodies have been identified. They include: Mira Devi (30), Amarjit Kumar (14), Jogi Sahni (65), Nagina Sahni (76), Naresh Paswan (45), Pundeb Paswan (65), Sundarpati Devi (65), Shiv Shankar Giri (54), Sukdev Sharma (68) and Paras Shah (46). All 11 bodies underwent postmortem examinations at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. Police handed over 10 identified bodies to family members. The East Burdwan district administration announced Rs 2 lakh financial aid to families of the deceased.

Gangster Salman Tyagi Found Dead In Delhi Jail, Suicide Suspected: Cops
New Delhi: A notorious gangster with several criminal cases registered against him, including those for murder and extortion, was found dead in his cell at Mandoli Jail here on Saturday, officials said. They said police suspect that he died by suicide. The inmate, identified as Salman Tyagi, was found hanging during a routine inspection in Jail Number 15. Prison authorities said he had used a bedsheet to make a noose. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, they said. Police and jail officials have launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. "A probe has been initiated. We are examining how the incident occurred and what could have led him to take this step. A detailed report will be submitted," a senior officer said. Tyagi was widely known in Delhi's underworld. Convicted under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, he had a long record of offences, including cases of extortion and organised violence. He began his criminal career with the infamous Neeraj Bawana gang but later attempted to build his own network, investigators said. Sources said that in recent years, Tyagi sought to align himself with the Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate. Even while lodged in jail, he allegedly continued to issue instructions to his associates. Last year, he reportedly ordered an attack on two businessmen in Delhi to extort Rs 50 lakh from them. Police believe the move was intended to show his influence and gain Bishnoi's trust. Beyond crime, Tyagi cultivated a flamboyant image on social media. Officers said he was deeply influenced by Bollywood actor Salman Khan and copied his hairstyle and appearance from the 2003 film 'Tere Naam'. He often posted pictures and videos on Instagram and YouTube, projecting himself as a larger-than-life figure. "Even after his arrest, he directed his aides to film him during court appearances and circulate videos to maintain his online presence," a police source said. Prison officials said CCTV footage and security measures are being reviewed to check for any lapses. Further investigation into the matter is underway, they added.
