KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- The ringgit rebounded from recent losses to end higher against the US dollar on Friday, supported by a better-than-expected forecast of Malaysia's second quarter growth, which signalled that the domestic economy remains resilient amid external uncertainties.
At 6 pm, the local note rose to 4.2410/2455 from 4.2465/2510 at Thursday's close.
Malaysia's economy is forecast to grow by 4.5 per cent in the second quarter of 2025 (2Q 2025) based on advance gross domestic product (GDP) estimates, slightly outpacing the previous quarter's 4.4 per cent.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the recent pre‑emptive overnight policy rate cut by Bank Negara Malaysia would likely support growth in the second half, especially as downside risks have increased. 'The ringgit appeared to have gained some strength today, improving 0.13 per cent against the US dollar,' he noted.
Second quarter growth was driven by robust domestic demand, with the growth momentum sustained in April and May, with a stronger performance anticipated in June, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia's (DOSM) advance forecast today.
At the close, the ringgit traded mostly easier against a basket of major currencies.
It improved against the Japanese yen to 2.8517/8549 from 2.8548/8580 at yesterday's close, but eased versus the euro to 4.9336/9388 from 4.9217/9269 and retreated against the British pound to 5.6999/7060 from 5.6886/6946.
The local note trended mostly higher against ASEAN currencies.

Kuih Bakar with a twist: From pandan to sardine, savoury flavours steal the spotlight

According to Shahrilnizam Mohamed, 54, based on the original kuih bakar recipe of his mother, he and his wife, Mahanum Abdul Rahman, 52, allowed themselves to reimagine the traditional cake with contemporary tastes. "We want to change the perception that kuih bakar is only meant to be sweet. It can also be savoury and come in a variety of flavours…The idea to create sardine-flavoured kuih bakar was inspired by both my wife and me, as we enjoy sardine dishes,' said Shahrilnizam when met by Bernama at his outlet in Larkin Sentral here recently. Photo by Bernama The couple began their business in December last year with a capital of RM70,000, and now offer five flavour variations, ranging from classic pandan (RM8) to premium durian (RM15). Shahrilnizam said this unique kuih bakar, which takes between 45 minutes and one hour to bake, is a hit with Singaporean customers, many of whom are willing to wait for long periods to take home their favourite flavours, particularly durian and sardine. During the holiday season, sales can reach up to 450 pieces a day, compared to an average of 200 on regular days, indicating how innovation can elevate this traditional Malaysian delicacy to unexpected heights. "Whenever we come here (Larkin Sentral), it's a definite purchase for our family. Usually, kuih bakar only comes in pandan or corn flavour, so these unique variations like beef and sardine are truly different and they taste really good,' she added. - BERNAMA More Like This

Three new durian varieties set to debut in next two years… all thanks to Mardi

KUALA KANGSAR, July 19 —The Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) is set to introduce three new durian varieties within the next two years. Mardi director-general Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani said the institute is currently evaluating several promising hybrid durians that could lead to new clones. 'We're assessing their suitability for planting in different locations. Apart from Mardi Kuala Kangsar, we're also developing hybrids at Mardi Jerangau in Terengganu. 'The names and codes are still being finalised and will be announced at the official launch,' he told reporters after the Duriotourism programme with the media at Mardi Kuala Kangsar today. Meanwhile, Mohamad Zabawi said the hybrid MRDI Super 88 (MS88) variety will be rebranded with a more appealing name. He added that 13,000 MS88 durian trees have been planted nationwide under Mardi's full supervision. 'Some trees are now between two and three years old, so in the next five to six years, they should be ready for wider commercial distribution,' he said. — Bernama

Kangar smart parking system to resume smoothly from Aug 1

KANGAR: The Kangar Municipal Council (MPKangar) has guaranteed that all concerns regarding the Smart Parking system will be fully addressed before its resumption on August 1. The council aims to provide a seamless experience for residents with improved efficiency. MPKangar president Affendi Rajini Kanth stated that the identified issues were minimal and solutions are already in place. 'We found issues regarding the parking were actually just a few and have identified the solutions. The system will be smoother from August,' he said during a press briefing after a townhall session. He emphasized the council's commitment to resolving complaints within 24 hours, reinforcing its dedication to enhancing public service quality. 'We really welcome all parties to provide their views. We don't view ourselves as perfect, so when we accept criticism and suggestions, we can improve from time to time,' he added. The Smart Parking system, launched in mid-June, was temporarily suspended for six months due to public feedback. The upcoming relaunch follows thorough improvements to ensure better functionality. - Bernama
