The 21 best restaurants in Lyon

Telegraph5 hours ago

Lyon is a born-and-bred gourmand and deciding where to dine in the city that has been lauded as France 's gastronomic capital for decades can be challenging. Be it earthy street market or food truck, on-trend millennial neo-bistro or Michelin-starred haute-cuisine restaurant, the choice is rich. All budgets are well catered for too – most restaurants serve a cheaper lunchtime formule or menu (fixed two- or three-course meal), making midi (midday) a prime time to indulge in an excellent-value meal.
Sampling an iconic andouillette (tripe sausage), tablier de sapeur ('fireman's apron' or panse, breaded and pan-fried) or other old-timer offal dish in a Lyonnais bouchon (bistro) is a Lyonnais rite of passage. French cuisine is no longer the only option, Lyon 's world table is notably rich, and a delightfully burgeoning vegetarian dining scene buzzes with creativity.

Le Grand Réfectoire
With its soul-soaring vaulted stone ceiling, wood panelling and stained-glass windows, there is no mistaking where you are: in the cavernous heart and soul of Lyon's historic Grand Hôtel Dieu. Sit at the central zinc bar for a God-like view of the medieval hospital's entire refectory. Chef Marcel Ravin woos urban gourmets with a contemporary bistronomique cuisine that never quite forgets Lyon's extraordinary culinary roots: rigatoni with cheesy cervelle de canut that Lyonnais silk weavers ate for breakfast in the 19th century, the ritual end-of-meal espresso with a one-bite meringue slicked in pea-green Elixir de Chartreuse liqueur. Fixed two- and three-course lunch menus are particularly good-value.

Lioness stars plan to help families with travel costs of following England at 2025 Women's Euros

GEORGIA STANWAY revealed a number of Lioness stars will be putting their hands in their pockets to support their families' Euros travel costs. And the Bayern Munich midfielder expressed gratitude to fans who will be forking out to watch them in the contest in Switzerland. 3 3 Stanway, 26, who won her race to be fit in time for this year's tournament, is among the Lioness aces who have relatives heading to Switzerland to support England. The team will be based in Zurich which is the nation's largest city and one of its most expensive. According to the cost of living database Numbeo the price of a small bottle of water or Coca Cola in Switzerland can range from £2.73 to £4.55 (3.00 to 5.00 Swiss Francs). And a combo meal at a McDonald's fast food restaurant might range from £13.28 to £16.00. Stanway and team-mates Ella Toone, 25, and Lotte Wubben-Moy, 26, hailed England support who will visit Switzerland next month to watch the team. The 77-capped midfielder said: "Even just for flights and hotels, then the cost of living there is extremely high, so we understand the demand it is on fans. "My family can make it (to the Euros) but I'm also aware that Switzerland is a very expensive country. "That's difficult for us as well because we want to help and support as much as possible, even with our own families. "A lot of us are putting our hands in our pockets to make sure that our families can get over there. "We would love to see as many fans as possible and we want to thank them in advance." England centre-back Wubben-Moy added: "A lot of people are willing to go above and beyond to be able to watch us and that's quite inspiring for us." At the 2023 World Cup England players were provided with a sum to support costs of travel for their relatives and loved ones. Players are set to receive a similar amount for this tournament with England aiming to be crowned Euros champions following their 2022 triumph. According to the FA the amount the Lionesses will receive is no less than that allocated to the men's team for the same purpose. Man United ace Toone said: "It will be a bit difficult for families who are staying out for the whole tournament. "But I know I'll always help my family be out there and make memories and make sure they're eating." Stanway, a key figure for England during their 2022 Euros tournament-winning run, made her return to international action last month from a knee injury. The Bayern Munich player underwent surgery in January on a damaged lateral collateral ligament that led to her being sidelined for the rest of this season. Despite fears she could miss the Euros, Stanway returned to England duty featuring in the Lionesses Nations League clashes with Portugal and Spain. Following her injury spell, Stanway insists she feels very ready for the the test England will face against France, Wales and the Netherlands in the group stage. The midfielder added: "I probably feel more ready than if I'd have played a jam packed season. 3 "I've learnt a lot in this process and that the injury wasn't a bad thing to happen to me. "It was my first injury to happen to me after 10 years in professional football, so I've not done too bad. "It kind of gave me that time away from football to learn on the weaknesses in the gym, just to get a completely different mindset."

Eurostar services cancelled after person hit by train

A dozen Eurostar trains from London to Paris have been delayed or cancelled. Almost every service from St Pancras to Gare du Nord was either delayed or cancelled on Wednesday, with a spokesman blaming 'technical issues'. A passenger stuck on a Eurostar train in France claimed the electricity had cut off, with those on board left with 'no air conditioning' for more than half an hour. Timetable data showed delays to departure times of up to two hours, with the 14.31 service not leaving until 16.31. A notice on the departure times website warned: 'The updated times shown in red are approximate and may change.' 'It's starting to get hot' One passenger said their service to Paris had got stuck near Crépy-en-Valois in the French countryside and was without air conditioning. 'Eurostar train stuck for over half an hour now,' the passenger said. 'Ventilation cut off, no communication for a quarter of an hour... it's starting to get hot, passengers are getting impatient. ''We're waiting for information from our driver.''We apologise for the inconvenience' – but still no ventilation. It's getting hotter and hotter.' Temperatures in Crépy-en-Valois were 26C at 6pm. 'Operational issues' Eurostar passengers were given nine different reasons for the delays on the company's official travel updates website page. These included unspecified 'operational issues', St Pancras 'being very busy' and 'a fatality'. Others included 'an earlier train arriving late', 'an earlier incident', 'temporary speed restrictions' and 'a train stopped on the line'. The company also cited 'technical issues' and 'over-running maintenance work'. The train company's customer services social media account said: 'Our trains are experiencing delays due to earlier technical issues and a person being hit by a train in France.'

American Express issues major update on British Airways points change after big overhaul left customers furious

AMERICAN Express has issued a major update on British Airways points, following the airline's recent overhaul of its loyalty scheme. Thousands of Amex cardholders will soon be able to earn "tier points" through their spending, unlocking elite perks with the airline, according to airline rewards website Head for Points. 1 The offer comes after a controversial update to the airline's loyalty scheme earlier this year, which means customers now need to spend more to achieve elite status. Travellers flying with British Airways or its Oneworld partners earn Avios to save on future flights and tier points to determine their BA Club status. The number of tier points you earn in a year decides whether you'll be in Blue, Bronze, Silver, or Gold membership levels. Blue status is given automatically to anyone who joins, but nearly half of the scheme's 13million members hold Bronze status or higher. These higher-tier statuses unlock perks, including complimentary seat selection, priority check-in, additional hold baggage allowance and access to the airline's airport lounges. Before April 1, you earned tier points based on how far you flew. Now, you earn one tier point for every £1 you spend on flights and holiday packages. To achieve higher statuses like Silver, which offers business class lounge access, you now need to spend £7,500 a year - significantly more than before. British Airways Amex cardholders already earn Avios on their spending, but they couldn't earn tier points before April's changes. The standard blue card earns 1 Avios per £1 spent, while the Premium Plus card, costing £300 a year, earns 1.5 Avios per £1. How to safeguard your holiday: A guide to ATOL protection and vetting travel companies However, from today, Premium Plus cardholders are able to earn up to 2,500 tier points in a membership year through their spending. Customers will earn 750 tier points for spending £15,000 on the card. If they spend an extra £5,000 (reaching £20,000), they'll get another 750 tier points. Spending a further £5,000 (a total of £25,000) will earn them an additional 1,000 tier points. Earning 2,500 tier points won't make much of a dent in the 20,000 needed for Gold status, but it's helpful for those aiming for Bronze or Silver. With 2,500 tier points from the Amex card, Bronze members would only need 1,000 more tier points, which can be earned by spending £1,000 directly with British Airways. Customers with the fee-free British Airways Amex Card aren't eligible for this offer. To participate in the offer, you'll need to enrol through the American Express app or website. Upon enrolment, you;ll also receive 500 free tier points automatically. British Airways said that there will be further opportunities to earn tier points using the Premium Plus credit card from April 2026. Meanwhile, customers booking flights with British Airways can enjoy bonus tier points on bookings made until December 31. This offer was originally set to end on February 14 but was extended after customer backlash. For example, you can earn 75 extra tier points for a short-haul economy flight and 150 extra tier points for a long-haul economy flight. To benefit from a tier points bonus, you must register your British Airways Club membership number by visiting Should you stay loyal to BA or look elsewhere? If you fly regularly - especially as part of your job - then the BA Club may still be beneficial for you. But you should never book a flight with BA or an affiliated airline just to earn points if money is tight. If your priority is cutting costs, concentrate solely on finding the lowest ticket price. Platforms like Skyscanner, Google Flights, and Kayak allow you to tailor your search to highlight the most affordable options. You can also convert your unused Avios into Nectar points. These can be redeemed for shopping, used to save 5p per litre on fuel, or even put towards other purchases For example, 500 Nectar points can be exchanged for £2.50 off at retailers like Argos or Sainsbury's. FLY LIKE A GOLD MEMBER FOR LESS IT is possible to get Gold member perks for free or cheap. You might assume that luxury perks like lounge access and fast-track security are exclusive to frequent or business class flyers, but that's not the case. Cheap or 'free' lounge access Airline lounges are usually reserved for frequent flyers or business class passengers - but there are ones such as No1 Lounges that you can pay to get access to. If you have a NatWest or Barclays Premier bank account then you can get free access to some lounges. On the Beach is offering free airport lounge access with 5-star holiday bookings for 2025. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is free to join and you can get discounts on passes to No1 Lounges. Rob Burgess, editor of frequent flyer website said: "You could get a credit card which comes with a Priority Pass lounge card. "Good options are the free for a year Amex Gold card (four free airport lounge passes per year), Amex Platinum (unlimited lounge access for up to four people) or the Lloyds World Elite Mastercard, which is £15 per month but offers unlimited airport lounge access." But always remember to pay off your balance in full each month, as interest charges may outweigh the perks. If you can't get free entry then prices start around £20. This can work out cheaper than paying for a meal and drink at the airport - but you need to weigh up the costs. Read reviews before you book as the facilities vary. Baggage loopholes If you fly with Easyjet then there is a loophole to get a second hand luggage bag for free. You are allowed to bring one bag from Duty Free - but MoneySavingExpert says it's heard from customers who have used this to store their handbag. Cheaper and better seats It is possible to sit together for free if you're flying BA, easyJet or Virgin - if you know the tricks. Try and check in as soon as it opens online and you will usually be able to sit together. With EasyJet you can check in 30 days in advance. You have to pay to get a specific seat, but the earlier you check-in the more likely you are to get a better one and be able to sit together. BA, Virgin Atlantic and Tui guarantee that kids under 12 will be sat with at least one adult. If you're flying with Ryanair, MoneySavingExpert says it can be cheaper to select the basic fare and then add extras rather than selecting the regular one. It says its seen costs of baggage and seat allocation can be up to 60% cheaper using this trick.
