White House says 15% tax on Nvidia and AMD for China sales under works, hints future expansion
The Trump administration is still finalising the details of its agreement to collect a 15% export tax on revenue from Nvidia and AMD's chip sales to China. US President Donald Trump confirmed this week that he negotiated the deal, which grants Nvidia and AMD export licenses for their China-specific AI chips in exchange for a percentage of their revenue. The White House also said that similar deals may be extended to other companies in the future. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the arrangement currently applies to just the two chipmakers. 'Right now it stands with these two companies. Perhaps it could expand in the future to other companies,' she said. Leavitt added that the 'legality of it, the mechanics of it, is still being ironed out by the Department of Commerce,' suggesting that the implementation of the unprecedented deal is far from complete. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo Donald Trump calls Nvidia H20 chips 'Obsolete' The development comes days after it was reported that Trump told Nvidia and AMD that they need to pay 15% of the revenue to the government. "I said, 'If I'm going to do that, I want you to pay us as a country something, because I'm giving you a release'," Trump stated. Nvidia, for its part, released a statement saying, "We follow rules the U.S. government sets for our participation in worldwide markets." The agreement has drawn criticism from trade lawyers and experts who have questioned its legality, citing existing laws that regulate how the government can charge fees for export licenses. The chips in question, including Nvidia's H20 and AMD's equivalents, are specifically designed to comply with US export regulations that were put in place in 2023 to limit China's access to advanced AI technology. The U.S. government is concerned that these powerful chips could be used by China to advance its military capabilities. ‘Don't think US tariffs will…': S&P confident Donald Trump's tariffs won't impact India's growth; here's why
S&P projects India's GDP growth to remain steady at 6.5% in the ongoing fiscal year. (AI image) The Donald Trump administration's move to impose a total of 50% tariffs (25% base tariff + 25% additional tariff for India's crude oil trade with Russia) are unlikely to have any significant impact on the Indian economy, believes S&P Global Ratings. In fact, S&P has even said that the US tariffs pose no threat to the positive sovereign outlook for India. S&P had enhanced its outlook on India's 'BBB-' sovereign rating to positive in May 2022, attributing it to strong economic performance. Trump declared on August 6 that all Indian imports would face an additional 25% tariff, supplementing the existing 25% duty, resulting in a total tariff of 50% effective from August 27. The White House attributed this decision to India's ongoing procurement of Russian oil. Also Read | 'Can't cross some red lines': Government officials tell Parliamentary Panel on India-US trade talks; focus on export diversification amidst Trump tariffs Why US tariffs are unlikely to hit India's growth story The S&P Global Ratings Director YeeFarn Phua said on Wednesday that India's growth would remain unaffected by Trump's tariffs, given its limited trade-oriented economic structure, whilst maintaining a positive sovereign ratings outlook. According to a PTI report, when questioned about potential risks to India's positive outlook due to US tariffs, YeeFarn explained that India's economy would remain stable, noting that its export exposure to the US represents merely 2% of GDP, indicating minimal trade dependence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Victoria Principal Is Almost 75, See Her Now Boite A Scoop Undo "I don't think the tariffs imposed on India will have an impact in terms of economic growth, largely because India is not a very trade-oriented economy. And if you look at India's exposure to the US in terms of exports to GDP, it is just about 2%,' YeeFarn Phua was quoted as saying. S&P projects India's GDP growth to remain steady at 6.5% in the ongoing fiscal year, matching the previous financial year's performance. YeeFarn noted that significant export sectors to the US, including pharmaceuticals and consumer electronics, remain unaffected by Trump's tariff moves. Also Read | Donald Trump tariffs: How much will India's fuel bill rise if it stops Russian crude oil imports & where would it buy from? Explained "Over the longer term, we don't think this (higher tariffs) will be a big hit (on India's economy), and therefore, the positive outlook on India remains," YeeFarn said at a Webinar on Asia-Pacific Sovereign Ratings. Addressing concerns about US tariffs affecting investment flows into India, he explained that businesses have implemented the 'China plus one' strategy in recent years, establishing operations in India primarily to serve the local market. "Many (businesses) are going there not because they are looking to export just to the US. Many of them are going there because of the huge domestic market as well. An emerging middle class is getting even for those who are looking to invest more in India and looking to export, it might not necessarily be the US market," YeeFarn said. India-US trade facts In 2021-25, the United States emerged as India's leading trading partner. The US contributed approximately 18% to India's overall goods exports, whilst accounting for 6.22% of imports and 10.73% of bilateral trade. India maintained a favourable trade balance with the United States, recording a surplus of $35.32 billion in goods during 2023-24. This figure increased to $41 billion in 2024-25. The bilateral trade between India and the United States totalled $186 billion in 2024-25. During this period, India's exports to the US amounted to $86.5 billion, whilst imports were valued at $45.3 billion. The ongoing trade negotiations between India and the US have hit a bump over the former's clear stance of not opening its agricultural and dairy sectors to American products. Additionally, Trump's desire to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict has led to India feeling the heat of 25% additional tariffs for its crude oil imports as a pressure tactic on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Digital drought fix? Keir Starmer-led UK government tells citizens to erase emails and pics to conserve water
UK water shortage 2025 : In an unusual attempt to tackle the growing water crisis, the Keir Starmer-led UK government is urging citizens to delete old emails and digital photos as a way to help conserve water, advice that has left many questioning the government's approach, as per a report. England Facing Worst Drought Since 1976 The recommendation comes amid a "nationally significant" water shortage, with five regions officially in drought and six more experiencing long-term dry conditions, as reported by Tom's Hardware. England has just endured its driest six-month stretch since 1976, and August isn't shaping up to bring much relief, according to the report. Rivers and reservoirs are shrinking, and the government is scrambling to promote water-saving measures, as per Tom's Hardware report. The guidance stated that, "Delete old emails and pictures as data centres require vast amounts of water to cool their systems," as quoted in the report. Live Events ALSO READ: Record-breaking $27.7 tariff haul in July has Trump celebrating, but will it last? Experts Say Digital Cleanups Unlikely to Save Water However, experts have highlighted that the advice is likely not very sensible, according to the report. While it's true that some data centers use evaporative cooling systems, most of the water and energy consumption is tied to powering servers during high computational tasks, like running AI models or streaming video, not storing your decade-old vacation photos or unread newsletters, as per the Tom's Hardware report. In fact, many storage drives sit idle in low-power states, especially for rarely accessed data, according to the report. Could Deleting Emails Use More Energy Than Storing Them? Not only would deleting files have a negligible effect on data center operations, it could actually increase water and energy use if done in mass, which would make this a counterproductive exercise, as per the Tom's Hardware report. Much of UK's Cloud Data Isn't Even Stored in the UK Meanwhile, if the data a person is trying to delete to save water is stored in a data center outside of the UK, they will actually end up saving water, or more likely not, in some other country, as reported by the Tom's Hardware. This is because the UK does not have a universal law mandating that citizen data has to be stored within the country, according to the report. FAQs Will deleting old emails and photos really help save water? Not significantly. Experts say it's a negligible action that's unlikely to make a real difference in data center water use, as per the Tom's Hardware report. How to save water at home? Fix leaks, collect rainwater, reuse wastewater for plants, shorten showers, and avoid unnecessary lawn watering, as per the Tom's Hardware report.
