Cutting-edge assistive devices galore at disability expo
Chennai: Navigate differently using assistive devices and breakthrough tech solutions — this is what the Tech4All 2025 showcased for two days in the city through lived experiences. The two-day expo of innovation designed for persons with disabilities (PwD) was not an exhibition but a conversation. For individuals with disabilities were directly involved in testing new tools, sharing feedback, and highlighting their specific needs. Several companies, including startups from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, participated in the expo at Kalaivanar Arangam, displaying advanced technologies aimed at supporting people with disabilities. Around 1,500 people, 60% of whom were persons with disabilities, had registered for the event. Attendees were able to try out demonstrations of artificial limbs, 360-degree VR videos designed especially for children with autism and mental challenges, AI-powered glasses, and electric wheelchair bikes. "We are glad that the govt has organised an exclusive expo for the PwD community, and we were able to experience many advanced technologies. I came across motorised wheelchair bikes and tried them—they were helpful, comfortable, and surprisingly affordable compared to market rates. These devices are also quite advanced. We saw various technologies designed for different types of disabilities," said M Selvam, a wheelchair user. Students from schools for children with disabilities also visited the exhibition over the two days. They explored games specifically developed for visually impaired and autistic children. The students gained insights into the available facilities and shared their feedback on the stalls based on their experiences. Many parents and caregivers placed orders for devices, particularly motorised bikes, games, sensor-enabled artificial limbs, and spinal cord injury support devices. A Mumbai-based company, Robo Bionics, showcased a bionic arm and hand with a sense of human touch. According to co-founder Anil Nair, the device functions with the help of sensors and has already benefited at least 60 individuals across the country. Income tax raids Wazirabad tehsil office, property deals for six years under scanner
Gurgaon: A 12-member team of the income tax department on Friday carried out a search and survey of the Wazirabad tehsil office, which handles registries and other records of some of the costliest property transactions in the city, and across the country. Officials told TOI that high-value property transactions, some amounting up to multi-million rupees, from the last six years are under scrutiny. The Wazirabad office is the largest revenue earner in Haryana and logs annual property registries up to Rs 25,000-30,000 crore. Areas such as Golf Course Road in Gurgaon fall under its jurisdiction. Accompanied by a police team, the I-T department started the survey early on Friday morning and asked the registrar to provide access to documents. Officials went through the records for the next 13 hours. An I-T department official said the tehsil office was not providing full and accurate information related to property transactions, causing financial losses to the department, which could not levy the mandated taxes. During registrations, PAN numbers of those involved in transactions were not properly filled, preventing the department from collecting taxes from buyers and sellers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo "The income tax department was not receiving accurate information. Information about registrations in the tehsil was superficial, and even when details were sent, PAN numbers were not available," the official, who was involved in Friday's survey, said. According to norms, tehsildars have to share details of registries above Rs 30 lakh with the I-T department. The district revenue department has to share details like the name, PAN card and Aadhaar card details of buyers and sellers too. "The disruption in sharing proper information by the revenue department about land transactions hampers our work," the I-T official said. Officials told TOI the search and survey was carried out on the direction of the I-T department's intelligence and criminal investigation wing in Chandigarh. The Wazirabad office came under the wing's scanner after coming across a case of a builder who had registered a farmhouse for Rs 200 crore there. Other than the Wazirabad office, other tehsils in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Palwal are under scrutiny too, they added. Asked about I-T department's action, deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar said on Friday that the govt agency is doing its job and the revenue department is providing all support required. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The victim, who runs a business, lodged a complaint with the Pune Cyber police on Thursday. An officer from the Pune Cyber police told TOI that, according to the complainant, in February this year, he was added to a group of investors on a mobile messaging app by an unknown person. One person was providing training on investments in the share market in that group. "The complainant told us that in April this year, the trainer messaged him and informed him that he could earn a good amount of money if he invested in shares through their trading app. The message also stated that the victim could get IPOs easily if he purchased through their app," the officer said. He said that on April 23, the complainant withdrew Rs 1 lakh, which was also credited to his bank account. When he tried to withdraw Rs 65 lakh more, he was not allowed. He was told to pay Rs 15.58 lakh for the tax. After that, he was asked to pay Rs 17 lakh under the pretext of profit-sharing fees. After the payment, the crooks told him to pay the same amount again as the complainant transferred it to his trading app by mistake. Following this, the complainant transferred the same amount. They took Rs 9 lakh more from him under the pretext of profit-sharing fees again. "After that, the complainant was told to withdraw his money. When he tried to withdraw Rs 90 lakh on May 16, the crooks closed his trading app and stopped responding to his calls. He realised that he was duped and approached us," the officer said.
