One of the ‘greatest TV shows of all time' launched 36 years ago today

Metro7 hours ago
If a friend asked you, 'What's the greatest TV show ever made about?' how would you answer them?
Would you explain how it's about a brutal crime boss going to therapy? Perhaps you'd say it follows a chemistry teacher who starts cooking meth to provide for his family?
Maybe you'd tell them it's about a bunch of wannabe influencers seeking a brand deal… I mean, love in a villa?
Whatever show you think is the best of the best, though I very much doubt you'd tell them it's about nothing.
And yet, 36 years ago today, a show 'about nothing' premiered on NBC and changed television forever.

I'm talking, of course, about Seinfeld, one of the most influential and important series ever made.
If you never watched it, then 'NO SOUP FOR YOU! Okay, that's not fair. Allow me to explain the series' premise because it's not really about 'nothing'.
The show follows a fictionalised version of Jerry Seinfeld (Jerry Seinfeld) and follows him and his friends – George Costanza (Jason Alexander), Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards) as they navigate life in New York City.
Now, there are ongoing plots like Jerry getting his own TV show (yes, it gets very meta), and George's terrible love life, but for the most part, the show focuses on the little things in life.
This meant you got entire episodes focused on things like finding a car in a multi-storey car park, characters' sex lives, or, most famously, trying to get some soup.
Looking to get started with Seinfeld? Why not start here…
10. The Jimmy ( Season 6, Episode 18) – Elaine dates a man whose annoying habit of referring to himself in the third-person annoys Jerry.
9. The Hamptons (Season 5, Episode 2) – Jerry and his pals visit a friend in The Hamptons, and it goes as well as you'd expect.
8. The Betrayal (Season 9, Episode 8) – Jerry sleeps with a woman George is trying to date.
7. The Merv Griffin Show (Season 9, Episode 6) – Kramer decides to recreate the Merv Griffin Show in his apartment.
6. The Bizarro Jerry (Season 8, Episode 3) – Elaine meets a man who is Jerry's exact opposite.
5.The Marine Biologist (Season 5, Episode 14) – George starts dating a woman who's convinced he's a marine biologist.
4. The Outing (Season 4, Episode 17) – Elaine convinces a journalist that Jerry and George are dating.
3. The Opposite (Season 5, Episode 21) – George does the exact opposite of what he'd normally do.
2. The Soup Nazi (Season 7, Episode 6) – The gang try and get some soup.
1. The Contest (Season 4, Episode 11) – Jerry and friends make a competition out of self-control.
These plots may sound mundane, but they were the secret to the show's success because they made the characters and their world incredibly relatable.
Creators Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld would then use this relatable world to make absolutely hilarious jokes and gags about the terribly recognisable gaffes and faux pas we all make on a daily basis.
In a way, then, Seinfeld wasn't a show about nothing; it was a show about everything and everyone.
Unsurprisingly, considering the brilliance of its premise, cast, and writing, Seinfeld was a huge hit, running for nine seasons from 1989 to 1998 and garnering legions of fans across the globe and turning Jerry into a household name.
Indeed, the series' two-part finale was watched by 76.3 million people across America – making it the fourth-most watched series finale in US history.
However, beyond the series' commercial and critical success, it had a major influence on the way TV was made.
Arguably, the series' biggest influence is that it opened the door to TV shows about unlikable characters.
Without Seinfeld, we definitely wouldn't have got Always Sunny or Peep Show, and there's an argument to be made that even stuff like The Sopranos owes a debt of gratitude to Jerry and his friends.
Oddly, though, Seinfeld's biggest contribution to pop culture may be that it helped give us Friends.
While Friends may be a far more traditional sitcom than Jerry's creation, the two share certain DNA – something that critics were keen to point out when Friends debuted, with some even labelling it a Seinfeld rip-off.
Jerry himself has made several potshots at Friends for 'copying' his idea, once joking that the show is just Seinfeld 'with better-looking people'.
Jerry's tongue-in-cheek comments aside, the real debt Friends owes Seinfeld is that Friends reruns often ran after Seinfeld, and this lead-in gave the show a massive boost in popularity.
Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe on the show, once told The Daily Beast: 'It was in the summer when we were in reruns after Seinfeld, where Seinfeld was our lead-in, where we exploded.'
'I remember going to some party, and Jerry Seinfeld was there, and I said, 'Hi,' and he said, 'You're welcome,'' More Trending
'I said, 'Why, thank you…what?' Lisa continued. 'And he said, 'You're on after us in the summer, and you're welcome. I said, 'That's exactly right. Thank you.''
So I guess if it wasn't for Seinfeld there's an argument to be made there'd be NO FRIENDS FOR YOU!
Watch all nine seasons of Seinfeld on Netflix.

Sam Fender forced to cancel string of gigs due to 'frustrating' health issue

Geordie superstar Sam Fender has announced a 14-day break from performing due to a new health scare. In a social media post on Friday, the 31-year-old singer told his followers that his vocal cords were checked over by his ENT doctor earlier in the week. Although they were 'slightly swollen' the Seventeen Going Under hitmaker was told he would be okay to carry on playing his shows. During his headline act opening the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Thursday evening, the chart-topper had put on an incredible show, singing his big hits and a few songs from his new album, People Watching to F1 fans. He continued: 'I felt I needed I had to push a lot harder to sing – this is never a good sign.' He went on to break the devastating news that, after another ENT checkup, he had a haemorrhage on one of his vocal cords, forcing him to cancel several upcoming gigs. This includes his performances at Roch Werchter, Down the Rabbit Hole, NOS Live and Montreux Jazz Festivals. The music artist explained that if was to sing he could risk 'lasting damage' to his vocal cords. 'This is incredibly frustrating as I have been so careful with my vocal health and this year so far has been the best of my career.' Obviously devastated, Sam added: 'I'm so sorry to everyone who is coming to those festivals with our show in mind,' 'Our fans are the most important thing to us, I hate letting people down and I hate not being able to sing for weeks as it is my only real passion in life,' he added. Sam has been very transparent about his previous mental health struggles, especially through Covid – and has been praised by many for rising above toxic masculinity and being a great role model by speaking out. The People Watching star has also suffered physical health problems: respiratory infections, laryngitis, and tonsillitis – which resulted in him having to cancel shows over the years. Fans were gutted Sam did not appear at Glastonbury this year after rampant rumours suggesting he would play a secret set. The fan-favourite singer released his third studio album, People Watching, in February of this year. Sam has since begun his People Watching tour, selling out huge venues like the London Stadium and his very own stomping ground, St James Park. His tour has got lots of media attention, especially on TikTok, making his fan base grow rapidly. Olivia Dean was his chosen support act and he actually brought her out on stage to sing 'Rein Me In' back in June at London Stadium. The pair have since joined forces to release the duet which has over 4 million streams on Spotify, after only two weeks of it being out. More Trending The South Shields-born hit-maker isn't the only singer who has had to take a step back from performing due to vocal cord issues. John Bon Jovi, 61, recently underwent surgery on his vocal cords – one of the cords was ' literally atrophied' and Bon Jovi found a surgeon who was willing to use a transplant to build it back up. Similarly to Sam, Kesha rocked out so hard on stage at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert that she haemorrhaged her vocal cords. Sir Tom Jones has also spoken out about his struggles with controlling his voice as he ages 'The older you get, the less control you have over your vocal cords.' Got a story? I'm a freshly graduated mess – and Noah Kahan set me off

As someone whose Spotify Wrapped looks like a psychoanalyst's worst nightmare, seeing Noah Kahan at BST felt like a trip to therapy. Last night, I cried into my warm cider with 65,000 strangers while a man in Dutch braids sang about leaving home, seasonal depression, and the emotional weight of New England. The number of times I went from sobbing to crying with laughter – if singing didn't work out, he could have always taken up comedy (PSA I am glad the singing worked out). It felt like a giant group hug between friends, fathers and daughters and people who met five minutes ago in the queue. It was definitely a night to remember. British Summer Time opened with three incredibly talented artists on The Great Oak Stage: Gigi Perez, Finneas and Gracie Abrams. I was a fan of each of these artists prior to going, but hearing them all live was an out-of-body experience; as a girl currently crashing out about leaving university, nothing quite compares to screaming 'Free Now' in a sunny field with your best friend. Not forgetting to mention the roar of the crowd when Finneas brought out new bandmate Ashe to perform their iconic hit 'Til Forever Falls Apart'. The pair (now in a band titled 'The Favours') also performed a new song titled 'The Hudson' which is set to release on July 11th. After our voices were well and truly warmed up a crowd of emotionally unstable Noah Kahan fans waited in anticipation. He opened with All My Love, which had every single person jumping up and down from the first guitar chord. Shout out to school assemblies for preparing us for this moment, all 65,000 of us screaming his lyrics back to him – my ears are still ringing. The 28-year-old superstar addressed the crowd after his first song, 'My name is Noah Kahan and this is the biggest show I have ever played in my life'. The 28-year-old was born in Vermont, USA (he sings about this a lot – from what I've gathered he is not a huge fan). He loves to dutch braid his hair. Also is very familiar with a brightly coloured two piece. His hit 'Stick Season' was number one for seven consecutive weeks in the UK. His 2022 album 'Stick Season' was re-released as 'Stick Season: we will all be here forever' in 2023 The re-release featured some of music's biggest names with the likes of Gracie Abrams, Hozier, Sam Fender, Post Malone and a few other incredible artists. TW: His music will make you cry. The Prize, including entry and attendance at TRSNMT festival, is subject to and governed by the Promoter's full ticket terms and conditions. 1 prize available. 1 entry per person. Full T&Cs apply, see here. As the crowd continued to scream and cheer, the chords of 'Everywhere Everything' started to play – a clear fan favourite. Noah's vocals were pitch-perfect and after posting on his Instagram 'Special surprises for you tonight' everyone was on edge wondering which guests he would bring on to the stage. There were whispers in the crowds of Sam Fender, Hozier and even a potential surprise performance of 'Dial Drunk' with Post Malone. After the first chorus, Noah shouted 'Make some noise for Gracie Abrams' as the 25-year-old pop star walked out onto the stage to sing her verse. I was amongst the girls screaming at this moment as it was a crossover of the most gut-wrenching artists. After the slight disappointment of Post Malone not coming out for 'Dial Drunk', Noah climbed down the stage and ran over to the B stage – high-fiving as many hands as he could on his way there. Noah joked: 'Yes I have two stages, it's like the Eras Tour but the only era is depression'. The number of times I went from sobbing to crying with laughter – if singing didn't work out, he could have always taken up comedy (PSA I am glad the singing worked out). The crowd decided on his 2022 masterpiece, 'Strawberry Wine' which once again had us tearing up at the moving lyrics. This didn't feel like a concert, it felt like collective CPR – the way Noah has the ability to make his sold-out show feel like he is sitting with his guitar in the living room at 2am is all part of his incomparable talent. Back on the main stage, Noah began to play 'You're gonna go far' which sent post-grad me into another emotional breakdown – but it did feel like the perfect remedy. Noah went on to say, 'This is a big night, my mum is here somewhere,' which once again set off the harmonious screaming as people tried to spot the superstar's mum. He then introduced his massive hit, 'Call Your Mom' by saying: 'This one is for your mom haha.' Once again 65,000 Noah fans went wild as he brought out Gigi Perez to sing the second verse, which was nothing far from angelic – side note: Gigi needs way more attention her voice was incredible live. The Stick Season hitmaker darted off the stage as Hyde Park chanted 'Noah, Noah, Noah.' He ran back on the stage sporting a Chelsea FC shirt, where the crowd began to boo in unison causing Noah to break into laughter at the controversy he had created. His band began to play the TikTok hit, 'Northern Attitude' – fans had already noticed an extra mic stand on the stage so the guesses of who would be up there with Noah were being thrown around the crowd. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video To everyone's shock, it was not Hozier, as the light came on no other than Lewis Capaldi was standing dressed as Noah with the matching Chelsea FC top and his hair in braids – words can't describe how loud Hyde Park screamed at the moment. More Trending It was the duet no one expected but everyone there needed, especially after Capaldi's recent hiatus from music – it felt like we were witnessing history. The show closed with his iconic track, 'Stick Season', every single person in the park was dancing, hugging their friends, singing their hearts out as fireworks lit up the sky – it was all very weirdly healing. The whole night felt like a fever dream and it was a lot cheaper than therapy or going travelling to 'find myself'. Got a story?
