Another top AEW star is expected to take time off from the company.
Following a storyline write-off on this week's episode of Dynamite, a new report indicates that former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega will be absent from programming for an unknown period.
This news comes as AEW is already dealing with a significant "injury bug," with other top stars like Adam Cole, Will Ospreay, and Samoa Joe also currently sidelined.
Omega's potential absence would be another major blow to the company's main event scene.

The Storyline Write-Off
On the July 16th episode of AEW Dynamite, Omega's former manager and bitter rival, Don Callis, cut a promo addressing Omega's recent championship loss to Kazuchika Okada. During the segment, Callis repeatedly and callously referred to Kenny Omega as "dead," signaling a storyline reason for his absence.
A subsequent report from Fightful Select confirmed that Omega is indeed expected to take time off. The report noted that the specific reason for his hiatus, and whether it will be a consecutive or sporadic absence, is not yet known. Omega was not present at the Dynamite or Collision tapings this week.

This news is especially concerning given that Kenny Omega only recently returned from a career and life-threatening battle with diverticulitis.
The illness, which is a severe inflammation of the digestive tract, kept him out of action for over seven months. He made his triumphant and emotional return to the ring in June of this year.
Since his comeback, Omega has competed in ten matches. His return was seen as a massive boost for AEW, and he was immediately thrust back into the main event picture. This new, unexpected hiatus has fans worried, though it is unknown if it is related to his previous health issues.
Another AEW Pillar Sidelined
Kenny Omega is a foundational figure in AEW, serving as an Executive Vice President and its second-ever AEW World Champion. He is widely regarded as one of the best in-ring performers of his generation, with a legendary career in both AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
His absence adds to a growing list of top AEW talent currently on the shelf. The company is navigating the recent losses of Adam Cole (concussion), Will Ospreay (banged up), and Samoa Joe (promotional duties for Twisted Metal).
With another of its biggest stars now out, AEW faces a significant creative challenge as it builds towards the fall season.

Ryback Defends CM Punk After He Apologized And Competed In Saudi Arabia

Ryback coming to CM Punk's defense in 2025 probably wasn't on many wrestling fans' bingo cards this year. WWE Superstar CM Punk has come under fire from critics and fans following his appearance in Saudi Arabia this week, where he apologized for a six-year-old tweet and competed against John Cena in the main event of Night of Champions. Surprisingly, one of Punk's biggest detractors of the last decade, former WWE Superstar Ryback, has come to his defense today on social media in response to an opinion piece, tweeting out: 'I've had my issues with Punk, but I don't see him as a sellout. He returned to do what he loves and to make money — much like you're doing by writing critical think pieces about others for clicks. WWE is a global business, and working at that level means navigating complex deals, personal beliefs, and public perception. His apology wasn't about abandoning values — it was about how he expressed them publicly in ways that hurt professional relationships,' Ryback said in a post. Seth Rollins Injures Knee At WWE Saturday Night's Main Event

A Seth Rollins knee injury led to an impromptu finish on Saturday night. Rollins competed against LA Knight at tonight's edition of WWE Saturday Night's Main Event in Atlanta. The match went on for a few minutes before Rollins hit a springboard senton and set up a moonsault from the middle rope on the opposite side of the ring. Knight rolled out of the way to avoid it, and Rollins landed awkwardly on his knee. He rolled to the ropes as commentary mentioned that he must have tweaked his knee. Rollins then dragged himself to the corner as the referee tried to check on him. Knight went to attack Rollins, but backed away as the referee called him off. Rollins conferenced with Paul Heyman and the referee, then the doctor came out to the ring. The doctor and Rollins spoke briefly, then Rollins pulled himself up and the match was restarted. Rollins hobbled his way over as Knight rushed him and hit the BFT. Knight immediately made the cover and raised his arms. However, he looked visibly upset about the injury and impromptu finish and could be seen yelling 'f*ck' before leaving the ring. WWE says Seth Rollins' knee is more serious than they originally thought Michael Cole addressed the injury after the match and showed a replay of the moment it happened. Cole said it seems 'much more serious than we first thought.' The Takedown on SI's Rick Ucchino also shared non-televised footage of Rollins being helped backstage: Seth Rollins is the current Men's Money In The Bank briefcase holder. He is the leader of a stable featuring Bron Breakker, Bronson Reed and Paul Heyman, and recently began a feud with LA Knight on WWE RAW. This was their first-ever singles match against each other. They previously competed against each other in the 2025 Money In The Bank match and the 2025 Men's Royal Rumble match. CM Punk Had ‘Handshake Agreement' For 2019 WWE Return, Reveals Why It Didn't Happen

CM Punk claims he had a handshake agreement to return to WWE in 2019, so why didn't it end up happening? WWE Superstar CM Punk was a recent guest on My Mom's Basement with Robbie Fox. During the discussion, Punk claims that before the spot on Backstage came together, he had a private meeting with Vince McMahon and Triple H about returning to WWE in 2018 or 2019. Punk said the two sides had a handshake agreement for him to return, but McMahon ghosted him after the meeting. 'I think the Twitter and the internet perception is I tried to go back to WWE, and they didn't want me, so I went and did the FOX show. That's not what happened at all. I had a hilarious, clandestine meeting in the Borgata in Atlantic City with Vince (McMahon) and Triple H. I don't even know now. What is it? It's 2025. This has to be 2018 or '19, and it's just because Vince just started (calling). 'I had agents, they were telling me, 'Hey, they wanna talk to you,' and I was like, 'Whatever, I'm not interested,' and then Vince just started calling me. He was like, 'Hey! I'm eliminating the middleman,' and I was just like, 'This is insane,' and it just so happened that, 'Oh, well, I'm gonna be here.' 'Alright, we can get there.' You know, 'Okay, alright' and we had a meeting and we had a handshake agreement and then he ghosted me. CM Punk and Triple H chipped away at their problems during this meeting 'So, that's why it didn't happen. Unbelievable. I'm gonna write a book someday… It's a great story. It's a fantastic story. Yeah, that would have been probably the first time that me and Triple H probably started chipping away at any problems or drama that we had in the past. That was the first instance… Yeah (I was open to a return at the time). I was very much just like, yeah, okay. Pay me, whatever. I took some stuff personally. Like, years have gone by. Alright, I'm over it, recognized that it's a business. You don't want me to take it personally? Just pay me.'
