Excessive screen time among youth may pose heart health risks

( NewMediaWire ) - August 06, 2025 - DALLAS — Children and young adults who spend excessive hours glued to screens and electronic devices may have higher risks for cardiometabolic diseases, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and insulin resistance, according to new research published today in the Journal of the American Heart Association, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal of the American Heart Association.
A 2023 scientific statement from the American Heart Association noted that 'cardiometabolic risk is accruing at younger and younger ages,' and only 29% of American youth, ages 2 to 19 years, had favorable cardiometabolic health based on 2013-2018 data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
This analysis of more than 1,000 participants in two studies in Denmark found that increased recreational screen time was significantly associated with higher cardiovascular risks and cardiometabolic risks among children and adolescents.
'Limiting discretionary screen time in childhood and adolescence may protect long-term heart and metabolic health,' said study lead author David Horner, M.D., PhD., a researcher at the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood (COPSAC) at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. 'Our study provides evidence that this connection starts early and highlights the importance of having balanced daily routines.'
Using data from a group of 10-year-olds studied in 2010 and a group of 18-year-olds in 2000 that were part of the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood cohorts, researchers examined the relationship between screen time and cardiometabolic risk factors. Screen time included time spent watching TV, movies, gaming or using phones, tablets or computers for leisure.
Researchers developed a composite score based on a cluster of metabolic syndrome components — waist size, blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein or HDL 'good' cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar levels – and adjusted for sex and age. The cardiometabolic score reflected a participant's overall risk relative to the study group average (measured in standard deviations): 0 means average risk, and 1 means one standard deviation above average.
The analysis found that each extra hour of screen time increased the cardiometabolic score by about 0.08 standard deviations in the 10-year-olds and 0.13 standard deviations in the 18-year-olds. 'This means a child with three extra hours of screen time a day would have roughly a quarter to half a standard-deviation higher risk than their peers,' Horner said.
'It's a small change per hour, but when screen time accumulates to three, five or even six hours a day, as we saw in many adolescents, that adds up,' he said. 'Multiply that across a whole population of children, and you're looking at a meaningful shift in early cardiometabolic risk that could carry into adulthood.'
The analysis also found that both sleep duration and sleep timing affected the relationship between screen time and cardiometabolic risk. Both shorter sleep duration and going to sleep later intensified the relationship between screen time and cardiometabolic risk. Children and adolescents who had less sleep showed significantly higher risk associated with the same amount of screen time.
'In childhood, sleep duration not only moderated this relationship but also partially explained it: about 12% of the association between screen time and cardiometabolic risk was mediated through shorter sleep duration,' Horner said. 'These findings suggest that insufficient sleep may not only magnify the impact of screen time but could be a key pathway linking screen habits to early metabolic changes.'
In addition, a machine learning analysis identified a unique metabolic signature in the blood that appeared to be associated with screen time.
'We were able to detect a set of blood-metabolite changes, a 'screen-time fingerprint,' validating the potential biological impact of the screen time behavior,' he said. 'Using the same metabolomics data, we also assessed whether screen time was linked to predicted cardiovascular risk in adulthood, finding a positive trend in childhood and a significant association in adolescence. This suggests that screen-related metabolic changes may carry early signals of long-term heart health risk.
'Recognizing and discussing screen habits during pediatric appointments could become part of broader lifestyle counseling, much like diet or physical activity,' he said. 'These results also open the door to using metabolomic signatures as early objective markers of lifestyle risk.'
Amanda Marma Perak, M.D., M.S.CI., FAHA, chair of the American Heart Association's Young Hearts Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Committee, who was not involved in this research, said focusing on sleep is a great starting point to change screen time patterns.
'If cutting back on screen time feels difficult, start by moving screentime earlier and focusing on getting into bed earlier and for longer,' said Perak, an assistant professor of pediatrics and preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
Adults can also set an example, she said. 'All of us use screens, so it's important to guide kids, teens and young adults to healthy screen use in a way that grows with them. As a parent, you can model healthy screen use – when to put it away, how to use it, how to avoid multitasking. And as kids get a little older, be more explicit, narrating why you put away your devices during dinner or other times together.
'Make sure they know how to entertain and soothe themselves without a screen and can handle being bored! Boredom breeds brilliance and creativity, so don't be bothered when your kids complain they're bored. Loneliness and discomfort will happen throughout life, so those are opportunities to support and mentor your kids in healthy ways to respond that don't involve scrolling.'
As an observational study using prospectively collected data, the findings reflect associations rather than proving cause and effect. Moreover, parents of the 10-year-olds and the 18-year-olds reported screen time through questionnaires, which may not accurately reflect the actual time youth spent on screens.
Horner suggested that future research could explore whether limiting screen use in the hours before sleep, when light from screen exposure may disrupt circadian rhythms and disrupt sleep onset, may be an avenue to help reduce cardiometabolic risk.

But what exactly are these risks, and why are certain chemicals, known as endocrine disruptors, gaining attention? As a parent, it's natural to want to make the best choices for your family, but it can feel overwhelming to navigate the sea of information out there. Here's what to know, where they're commonly found, and how to take small, practical steps that feel doable for your family. What are endocrine disruptors? Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with the body's hormone systems. Hormones are like messengers that regulate everything from growth and metabolism to reproduction and mood. Endocrine disruptors can mimic or block these hormones when they enter the body. These disruptors can come from natural sources, like plants, or be synthetic and found in many everyday products. Endocrine disruptors can be found in many of the products we use daily, making it difficult to avoid them completely. Over 1,000 endocrine disruptors have been identified, but here are some of the most common ones: BPA (Bisphenol A): Often used in hard plastics like food containers, water bottles, and some older baby bottles and toys. Phthalates and parabens: Found in plastic packaging, shampoos, lotions, and cosmetics. Oxybenzone: Common in certain sunscreens. Lavender and tea tree oils: Often found in skin care products. Lead: Still present in older homes, vintage toys, and contaminated soil. Soy-based products: Contain phytoestrogens, which are chemicals produced by plants that can mimic estrogen in the body. Why it matters for babies and young kids Endocrine disruptors interfere with the body's hormone systems by mimicking hormones like estrogen, blocking normal hormone activity, or altering hormone levels. Endocrine disruptors can affect how hormones are made, broken down, or stored, leading to imbalances. Additionally, they can change how sensitive the endocrine system is to various hormones, increasing or decreasing their effects. This is particularly concerning for pregnant women, infants, and young children who are more vulnerable to these hormonal disruptions during important stages of growth and development. It's important to note that the research is ongoing; however, there is evidence that high exposure to endocrine disruptors can increase the risk of certain health issues. There is less evidence on what the actual safe levels are for people. As more research is available, the risks will become clearer. During pregnancy, research suggests that endocrine disruptors can cross the placenta, leading to low birth weight, thyroid dysfunction, and neurological disorders. Repeated exposure to chemicals like BPA has been linked to early puberty, reproductive malformations, and infertility risks, as well as reproductive cancers. Endocrine disruptors are also associated with metabolic disorders, such as obesity and insulin resistance, and conditions like gynecomastia. While these risks can seem alarming, it's important to acknowledge that most recommendations are aimed at reducing cumulative exposure rather than attempting to eliminate every source of endocrine disruptors. Simple ways to reduce exposure You don't need to eliminate every single source of endocrine disruptors. That's nearly impossible, and not the point. Instead, the goal is to reduce repeat exposure where it's easy and practical to do heating in plastic: Swap out plastic containers for glass or stainless steel, especially when heating food. If using plastic, make sure it's labeled 'BPA-free.' Use BPA-free baby products: Choose infant bottles and toys labeled 'BPA-free,' or consider using glass bottles to reduce exposure. Wash produce thoroughly: Pesticides can carry endocrine disruptors. Rinse fruits and vegetables well, or use a baking soda and water solution to minimize mineral sunscreens: Chemical sunscreens can contain oxybenzone, so consider mineral-based sunscreen made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Check labels for 'Phthalate-Free' or 'Paraben-Free': Opt for personal care products that do not contain these chemicals. Be cautious with essential oils: Avoid the sue of topical formulations of tea tree and lavender oils in children. These can contain chemicals with estrogenic/androgenic properties, and repeated use of these oils has been linked to breast growth in prepubertal girls and plastic toys: especially older or hand-me-down plastic toys, as they may contain higher levels of harmful chemicals. Reduce lead exposure: If you live in an older home, test for lead paint and make sure that any peeling paint is addressed. Choose flame-retardant-free items: if possible, avoid products treated with flame retardants, which can also act as endocrine disruptors. Keeping a balanced perspective Focus on reducing repeated exposure in key areas. Remember, the 'dose makes the poison.' Overexposure is when problems are likely to occur, not from occasional contact with things like receipts or plastic water bottles. It's easy to get swept up in fear, especially with the constant stream of new research on potential health risks. But balance is key. Make mindful choices that fit your family's lifestyle and needs, and don't feel pressured to overhaul everything all at once. 'Grey's Anatomy' star diagnosed with Hashimoto's: What to know about the disease
"Grey's Anatomy" star Camilla Luddington recently revealed she has been diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune disorder. The British actress, known for her role as Dr. Jo Wilson, shared the news on the "Call It What It Is" podcast in an episode aired on Wednesday, which she co-hosts with fellow "Grey's Anatomy" star Jessica Capshaw. 'Grey's Anatomy' star opens up about battle with postpartum anxiety, severe PMS disorder Luddington explained that, for some time, she had felt unusually tired and sluggish, often joking about being "slothy." However, she didn't consider that there might be a medical reason behind it. After finally completing routine blood work, Luddington received the surprising diagnosis. "My doctor was like, everything looks great except this one little thing," she recalled. The news hit her hard. "I remember hearing the words 'autoimmune disease' and thinking, 'What the f---?'" Luddington said, though she later learned that hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto's disease is quite common. What to know about Hashimoto's disease Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune disorder that can cause hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or, in rare cases, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The thyroid, a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, becomes damaged in people with Hashimoto's, NIDDK states on its website. The immune system produces antibodies that attack the thyroid, leading to the accumulation of white blood cells which destroy thyroid's cells that produce hormones. 'Grey's Anatomy' renewed for 22nd season at ABC This condition is also known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, or autoimmune thyroiditis, according to NIDDK. While the exact number of people affected in the U.S. is unknown, Hashimoto's is the leading cause of hypothyroidism, which impacts about 5% of Americans. NIDDK notes that early on, Hashimoto's may not show symptoms, but as it progresses, it can cause fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, joint pain, constipation, dry skin, irregular periods and a slowed heart rate. It often leads to hypothyroidism, but in its early stages, it can cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism. The thyroid may also enlarge, creating a swollen neck or goiter, which can shrink over time. According to NIDDK, the exact cause of Hashimoto's is unknown, but it is often linked to a family history of thyroid disease.
