Falcons rookie continues to turn heads in training camp

Yahoo4 days ago
Despite having limited resources, the Atlanta Falcons went into the offseason committed to improving their pass rush. The team scraped together $10 million to sign veteran edge rusher Leonard Floyd in free agency before adding two of the highest-rated edge rushers in the 2025 NFL draft.
The Falcons were praised by draft analysts for landing projected top-10 pick Jalon Walker with the 15th overall selection but earned mixed reviews for their decision to trade up for Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. later in the first round (pick No. 26).
Thus far in training camp, Pearce has quieted those doubters. The rookie has been disruptive as a pass rusher, and has helped the defense raise its intensity in practice.
Team reporter Will McFadden said Pearce continued to shine in his latest camp report. The former Volunteers standout was McFadden's most notable player from Friday's practice:
It's getting hard to keep the rookie out of this spot, because he makes it difficult to look away when he's out there on the field. Regardless of who he's up against, Pearce is giving each rep the energy it deserves and he's making a lot of plays. He had what would very likely have been a sack on game day, and he batted down yet another pass at the line of scrimmage. This is a defense that wants to attack, and Pearce, at this point in camp, is often the tip of the spear. -- Will McFadden, AtlantaFalcons.com
The Falcons have been happy to see Pearce thrive, even if it results in the occasional training camp brawl. Unfortunately, two of the team's other rookies have been dealing with minor injuries. First-round pick Jalon Walker is dealing with a hamstring injury and has been limited to individual drills in practice.
Head coach Raheem Morris said it was not a long-term injury for Walker. Third-round pick Xavier Watts was limited to individual drills on Friday. Watts has received some reps with the first-team defense, so hopefully he can get back out there next week.
On Saturday, the Falcons signed veteran defensive back Grayland Arnold and released offensive tackle Kilian Zierer in a corresponding move. Check out the team's updated 90-man roster HERE to keep up with the latest transactions.

Teddy Bridgewater Makes Career Pivot/Return By Signing With Tampa Bay

A year after inking their franchise quarterback to a three-year deal, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rekindled its relationship with a long-time NFL journeyman to potentially secure the team's 2025 backup signal caller. Yesterday, veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater officially re-entered the NFL by signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following a team meeting with ownership and the passing of his physical. The former Louisville Cardinal was last seen on an NFL roster in January 2025 as a member of the Detroit Lions. The addition of Bridgewater gives Tampa Bay insurance and stability for a quarterback room that is dealing with injuries to Mayfield and rookie late-round selection Michael Pratt. Pratt is managing a back injury while Mayfield recently returned to practice following a right hand contusion. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht also revealed to the public that five years ago Bridgewater was the team's second free agency option at starting quarterback behind eventual signee Tom Brady. 'A few years ago he was behind 'Door No. 2,' Licht said. "We talked about that today on the sidelines. So we ended up with Tom Brady, but we now have Teddy on the roster, so you can't have everything at once. You can have everything, just not all at once. Licht envisions the Buccaneers potentially carrying up to three quarterbacks on the opening day roster in 2025. Currently, the team has Mayfield as its starter with rookies Michael Pratt, Connor Bazelak and former 2021 second-round selection Kyle Trask competing for the backup quarterback role. 'We still have preseason games to play and all that, but right now Kyle is our backup,' Licht said. That's the intention and that's what we're hoping for, but yeah everybody's competing." On the NFL gridiron, Bridgewater has played for six NFL teams from 2014 to 2024 accumulating 15,120 yards passing, 75 touchdown tosses and a 33-32 record as a former first-round selection. Specifically pertaining to the Buccaneers, Bridgewater has ties with many important figures on the current roster and coaching staff. Tampa's defensive line coach Charlie Strong was once Bridgewater's head coach at Louisville. The NFL veteran was also co-workers with offensive coordinator Josh Gizzard in 2022 when Gizzard was Miami's quality control coach. Lastly, Bridgewater was high school teammates with long-time Buccaneers defensive standout and captain Lavonte David. "I think he would bring great professional leadership, add to the football team and a guy who knows what it takes," David told ESPN on Tuesday of the signing. "Been through a lot of adversity and knows what it takes to win. ... A great guy who's willing to sacrifice for the team, and he's definitely somebody who you want to call a friend outside of football." Bridgewater's return to the NFL all but solidifies his coaching tenure with his high school alma mater Miami Northwestern is over for at least this season. Last month, he was suspended by the school for providing impermissible benefits to his football players which included money from his own pocket to cover for team trips, meals and uber rides. In a team press conference today with the media, Bridgewater acknowledged that his actions were an all-out effort to protect the kids he coached from the community they navigated through each and everyday. "I'm protective, and I'm a father first before anything. And when I decided to coach, those players became my sons," Bridgewater said. "And I wanted to make sure that I just protected them in the best way that I can. I think that's what came about. Miami Northwestern's in a tough neighborhood, and sometimes things can happen when the kids are walking home and different things like that. So I was just trying to protect them and give them a ride home instead of having to take those dangerous walks." Last season as the team's headman, Bridgewater led Miami Northwestern to its first state championship in school history with a dominant victory over Raines High school 41-0 in the Class 3A Florida High School Athletic Association State Title Game.

2025 SEC Title Odds: 'There's Not A Real Standout Team'

Can you believe it: The Southeastern Conference has four teams among the top 10 in College Football Playoff championship odds. Then, two more teams are knocking on the door of the top 10, and there might be a sleeper or two in the mix, as well. So it's no surprise that, for SEC championship odds, bookmakers expect quite a battle to see who takes home the league crown and presumably a first-round bye in the CFP. "The SEC feels more competitive than in past years. It used to be just Georgia and Alabama," Caesars Sports head of football trading Joey Feazel said. "There's not a real standout team, so maybe we will get some variance this year." Feazel serves up his insights into how bettors are playing SEC championship odds. Texas' Time? Texas has been in the SEC all of one season, but it was a pretty good one. The Longhorns reached the SEC title game, losing to Georgia 22-19, though still earning an at-large berth into the College Football Playoff. From there, Texas knocked off Clemson and Arizona State to reach the CFP semifinals, where the Longhorns' season ended in a 28-14 setback to eventual national champion Ohio State. For this season, Caesars opened Texas as the +280 favorite to win the SEC, and the Longhorns are now +260. That said, Feazel remains a little wary. "The Texas Longhorns are still new to this conference, but right now, they're controlling most of the money," Feazel said. Quarterback Quinn Ewers moved on to the NFL, which fully swings open the door for Arch Manning to start. That has early bettors quite enthusiastic. "They're banking on Arch Manning. He's the Heisman Trophy favorite. But is he gonna be that guy this year?" Feazel said. "He does have a high ceiling, but we don't know how low his floor is." Manning got two starts last year, when Ewers was out with an oblique injury. Those starts came against two overmatched teams: Louisiana-Monroe, in a 51-3 blowout, and Mississippi State, in a 35-13 victory. Close Behind Georgia is the +375 second choice in SEC championship odds. As noted above, the Bulldogs won the conference title last year, getting a bye to the CFP quarterfinals. That's where the season ended, in a 23-10 loss to Notre Dame. Georgia has played in the last four SEC title games and won back-to-back national crowns in 2021-22 and 2022-23. With that success, though, comes a higher calling for many players: the NFL. "Every year, Georgia loses a lot to the draft," Feazel said. "There are question marks around this team, whether it will have its dominant form." Alabama is the +400 third choice to win the SEC. But as the post-Saban era hits Year 2, bettors aren't quite as intrigued by the Crimson Tide, who didn't reach the SEC final or the CFP last season. "Alabama still has its betting faithful, but there's less action than they were getting in the Saban years," Feazel said. LSU is expected to be in the conference championship mix, as well, and in fact has seen its odds notably improve in the offseason. Caesars opened the Tigers at +1100, and they're now +650. "We have a big Louisiana betting base. That's the case every year," Feazel said, adding there's plenty of belief in QB Garrett Nussmeier. "He will be one of the top quarterbacks drafted next year. The LSU faithful are coming in." Major Mover Oklahoma is a +2500 long shot in odds to win the SEC, but that's significantly better than where the Sooners opened months ago, at +6000. Feazel and oddsmakers at other books feel Brent Venables' squad could be an SEC dark horse. "Oklahoma has one of the hardest schedules, but is getting really good action. More action than you'd expect on Oklahoma," Feazel said. "The Sooners are not the dominant offensive team we've seen in past years. They're trying to get that back. "They seem to be a value play in the SEC, driving a lot of money." Cleveland Browns 'More Likely' to Have 4 QBs on Active Roster?

The Cleveland Browns have a lot of quarterbacks, all of whom feel they have a chance of making the 53-man roster. But, like, four of them? Cleveland is considered "more likely" to carry four quarterbacks than three on its active roster for the 2025 NFL season, according to ESPN. The Browns have added five quarterbacks this offseason, with Deshaun Watson expected to miss the 2025 season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders and Tyler Huntley. The 40-year-old Flacco, who played for the Browns in 2023, posted a 90.5 passer rating across six starts and eight appearances total for the Indianapolis Colts last season; Pickett, a 2022 first-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, backed up Jalen Hurts on the Philadelphia Eagles last season and has made 25 career NFL starts. Cleveland selected Gabriel, a 2024 Heisman Trophy finalist, with the No. 94 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Oregon; it then traded up to the No. 144 pick to select Sanders, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, out of Colorado. Huntley, who was signed by the Browns earlier this week, has made 14 career NFL starts. Of late, Sanders has been dealing with "arm soreness," while Pickett recently returned from a hamstring injury. In the meantime, Sanders is getting the starting nod in the Browns' preseason opener on the road against the Carolina Panthers on Friday night. The Browns open the 2025 regular season at home against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7 (1 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app). Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
