‘Activities alien to our identity': Spanish town bans Muslim festivities in public spaces; sparks outrage
A town in south-east Spain known as Jumilla in the Murcia region has imposed a ban on Muslims using public spaces, including civic centres and gyms, for celebrating religious festivals of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, reports the Guardian.
The ban, the first of its kind in Spain, was introduced by the conservative People's Party (PP) and approved with the abstention of the far-right Vox party, despite opposition from local left-wing groups.
Jumilla, a town with a population of around 27,000, has approximately 7.5 percent of its residents originating from predominantly Muslim countries.
'Municipal sports facilities cannot be used for religious, cultural or social activities alien to our identity unless organised by the local authority,' the proposal stated.
'Thanks to Vox, the first measure to ban Islamic festivals in Spain's public spaces has been passed. Spain is and will be forever the land of Christian people,' the Vox party stated through a post on X.
'They're not going after other religions, they're going after ours,' Mounir Benjelloun Andaloussi Azhari, president of the Spanish federation of Islamic organisations, was quoted as saying by the El País newspaper.
'We're rather surprised by what's happening in Spain. For the first time in 30 years I feel afraid,' he added, noting that the proposal was 'Islamophobic and discriminatory.'
Opposition leaders and legal experts have raised concerns that the decision may be unconstitutional.
'The PP violates the constitution and puts social cohesion as risk simply in the pursuit of power,' said Francisco Lucas, the socialist leader in Murcia, through a post on X.
'What do they mean by identity? And what about the centuries of Muslim legacy here?' said Juana Guardiola, a former socialist mayor from Jumilla, reports the Guardian.
The decision to ban Muslims in Jumilla from using public facilities is likely to face legal challenges, as it appears to violate Article 16 of the Spanish constitution. This article guarantees 'freedom of ideology, religion and worship of individuals and communities is guaranteed, with no other restriction on their expression than may be necessary to maintain public order as protected by law.'
The town was once part of the Roman Empire before coming under arab rule in the eighth century. Known as Yumil-la during that time, it remained predominantly Arab for several centuries until Christian forces led by Alfonso X of Castile seized Jumilla in the mid-13th century, reports the Guardian.
The local Arab ruler initially negotiated the capitulations of Alcatraz, an agreement that allowed Alfonso to be the king on the condition that the rights of the existing population were upheld. However, soon after Alfonso's death, Castilian forces invaded Jumilla, bringing an end to Arab rule in the region.

No Decision To Drop Foreigners Tribunal Cases Against Non-Muslims: Himanta Sarma
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday denied media reports that his government has asked officials of the foreigners tribunals to drop cases against members of six communities - Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain and Parsi - who entered the state before 2015, citing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). "The government has not issued any new directive apart from what is already outlined in the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). If any special cabinet decision is ever taken, I always inform you, but in this case, no such special decision has been made," he told reporters. He said the CAA provides security and protection to people who entered India on or before December 31, 2014. The CAA itself provides protection and security to individuals who entered India before 2014. "That is the current law, and unless the Supreme Court strikes it down, no additional cabinet decision is necessary," Mr Sarma said. He also said the state government has allowed withdrawing cases from the foreigners tribunal against two communities - Koch Rajbongshi and Gorkha. "Their names, which had earlier been listed in the tribunal, are now being removed," he said. The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has called for protests on Friday, claiming that the BJP-led government is trying to dilute the Assam Accord, which has a cut-off of 1971 for getting citizenship in Assam irrespective of religion. The Citizenship Amendment Act is aimed to provide a fast track to citizenship to refugees from six minority religious communities, except Muslims, from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the condition that they have lived in India for six years and have entered the country by December 31, 2014. The foreigners tribunals in Assam are quasi-judicial bodies that adjudicate on matters of citizenship based on lineage and a 1971 cut-off date. Of about 1.6 lakh people declared foreigners so far, more than 69,500 are Hindus.

Denial of appointment by Prez an insult to TG: CM
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has described the denial of appointment by President Draupadi Murmu to Telangana leaders on BC reservation issue as 'an insult to the State'. He said a plan of action would be initiated at Telangana Congress' Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting shortly in Hyderabad to put both BJP and BRS in the dock. He said MPs from both parties should explain why they failed to take part in the Mahadharna on August 6. Addressing a press conference along with his cabinet colleagues in New Delhi on Thursday, Revanth Reddy said that Telangana people were observing the actions of BRS and BJP and that the Congress was out to expose their behavior. Revanth Reddy said that a decision would be reached whether 42 per cent reservation be given within the party before the polls to local bodies or if there was other possible solution. He said local body elections would be held by September 30. He said that the argument that Rahul and Kharge did not come to Wednesday's dharna was 'meaningless'. 'If Kishan Reddy has doubts, I will arrange an official meeting and make him aware. The details of all castes have been collected and a caste census conducted,' Revanth Reddy said on questions raised by Kishan Reddy on caste survey. Revanth Reddy blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the denial of appointment by the President. 'They prevented us from getting an appointment. This is regrettable and painful and an insult to the people of Telangana,' he alleged. In a strong rebuke, the Chief Minister said that the BJP was obstructing the increase of BC quota proposed by the Telangana government on the pretext of Muslims being included in the BC quota. The Chief Minister clarified that the Telangana BC quota bills sent for President approval were not prepared on religion or caste lines. SC, ST and OBC quota were allocated en bloc in the elections to local bodies. Revanth explained that in 2017, a Muslim named Abdul Sattar was selected for IAS under the OBC quota in Rajasthan. BC reservations were provided for Noorbasha and others since 1971.
