PORTO : The boyhood club of Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and Andre Silva have dedicated their kit for this season to the brothers who died in a car crash on July 3 in Spain.
Fourth-tier Gondomar SC have imprinted pictures of Liverpool and Portugal forward Jota and his brother Silva, who played for Portuguese team Panafiel, on the front of their shirts.
The top of the back of the shirts bears the two players' names under an infinity symbol.
'More than a jersey, a tribute eternal,' Gondomar SC, who play in the Campeonato de Portugal, said in a social media post.
'Because football is more than victories and goals, it's legacy, it's family, it's love for our land.
'Our new jersey brings in the great image of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, two sons of Gondomar who left us too soon, but who will live forever in the history of our club and our football.
'Every time our athletes put on this jersey, it's like stepping on the field with them.'
Liverpool announced last month that their players will wear a 'Forever 20' emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets this Premier League season.
After consultation with Jota's family, his No 20 shirt will be retired across all levels of the Anfield club, including the women's and academy teams.
Jota and Silva grew up in Gondomar, a town on the outskirts of Porto.

Son draws fans to airport even though MLS deal not official

LOS ANGELES, Aug 6 — South Korean star Son Heung-min has not even been officially announced as joining Los Angeles FC of MLS but excited fans are already waiting to welcome him. ESPN and The Athletic report that Son, who left Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, will sign with LAFC for an MLS-record transfer fee of US$26 million. After press reports about Son's possible arrival yesterday at Los Angeles International Airport, about 40 fans of Son went to see if they could get an autograph or photograph or even a glimpse of their idol. They were unable to see Son, however, after his sendoff in South Korea a few hours earlier. 'Son is immensely important to me. I used to wake up at five or six in the morning to watch him play in England,' Jun Kwon, a 19-year-old fan, told AFP. 'He's going to change things here. My father and I, who had no interest in MLS, are already won over.' He was wearing a gold and black LAFC jersey purchased Tuesday morning and printed with his idol's name. In a decade with Spurs, Son scored 173 goals in 454 matches. The winger confirmed his plans to leave Tottenham in Seoul last weekend after a final match with the Premier League club. At LAFC, Son will replace French striker Olivier Giroud, who was sold to Lille in July, and will share a dressing room with French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, his former teammate at Tottenham. — AFP

REUTERS/Amr Abdallah Dalsh/File Photo (Reuters) -Former Porto captain Jorge Costa died on Tuesday at the age of 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club's training centre, the Portuguese side said. The former defender, who was serving as Porto's Director of Professional Football in his second season in the role, was rushed to hospital but could not be saved. "Throughout his life, both on and off the pitch, Jorge Costa embodied the values that define FC Porto: dedication, leadership, passion and an unshakeable spirit of conquest," the club said in a statement. "He left his mark on generations of fans and became a symbol of Portismo." Over his career, Costa played 530 games in all competitions - 383 for Porto and 50 for Portugal's national team. Costa earned the nickname "Bicho" (Animal) from teammate Fernando Couto during their partnership in central defence. As captain, he led Porto to UEFA Cup glory in 2003 and a Champions League triumph in 2004 under manager Jose Mourinho. The defender was one of six players to win five consecutive Portuguese league championships with Porto, alongside Aloisio, Drulovic, Paulinho Santos, Rui Barros and Folha. Costa returned to the club in April 2024 as director under new president Andre Villas-Boas. "Jorge Costa's legacy will always remain alive in the memory of all Porto fans. You will never be forgotten, Captain," the club added. (Reporting by Fernando KallasEditing by Christian Radnedge)
