College baseball notebook: Vols' clear dominance makes them consensus No. 1 after sweep of Florida

Tennessee's dominance through the first month of the season has become so apparent that one of the most authoritative college baseball media outlets demoted an LSU team on a 15-game winning streak from No. 1 in its Top 25 and replaced the Tigers with the Volunteers on Monday.
At 20-0, the Vols are the only remaining unbeaten team in Division I. They're off to the best start in program history and coming off a three-game home sweep against what was a top-10 Florida.
D1Baseball.com promoted the defending national champions over a now-No. 2 LSU (15-1) that went 4-0 last week and swept Missouri. D1Baseball said that since it began its rankings in 2015, it had never taken a No. 1 team off the top perch after an unbeaten week.
Tennessee, ranked No. 1 by Baseball America for a third straight week, is now the consensus top team. Arkansas (18-2) remains No. 3.
'Just got to keep going,' said Cannon Peebles, whose pinch double gave Tennessee the lead in a 7-4 win Sunday. 'Last year we were very fortunate to do what we did. Last year doesn't really matter anymore. Every single person on this team is focused on this year and we take it game by game, and I think that's why we've had this start.'
There are no weaknesses. Liam Doyle, who leads the nation with 53 strikeouts, heads a staff that ranks first with a 1.72 ERA and 5.61 hits allowed per nine innings. Offensively, the Vols lead the nation with 2.65 homers per game and .662 slugging percentage and are second at 11.3 runs per game.
Tennessee hosts East Tennessee State (15-4) on Tuesday before traveling to a top-10 Alabama (20-1) for a Thursday-to-Saturday series. The Crimson Tide swept Texas A&M on the road over the weekend.
Swattin' Sasaki
It took 66 at-bats for Stanford freshman Rintaro Sasaki to break through with his first collegiate home run. Japan's all-time high school leader went deep three times over six at-bats Saturday and Sunday as the Cardinal swept Duke. He was 6 of 14 with eight RBIs in the series and is batting .338/.424/.500 through 18 games.
Sudden surge
Northwestern's Trent Liolios had three homers in a 13-5 win over Penn State and a total of four in the doubleheader split Saturday. Liolios had nine homers and batted .209 in 52 games last season. So far this season he has eight homers and a .382 batting average through 17 games.
Devil of a time
Arizona State's offense, held to a combined four runs in two straight losses last week, unleashed some pent-up frustration in the second game of its road series with TCU on Saturday.
The Sun Devils won 26-9, the most runs they've scored in a conference game since 2000 and tied for the most TCU has ever allowed. ASU's 28 hits also were a TCU opponent record. Kyle Walker hit the first of ASU's five homers leading off the game. The Sun Devils won 12-11 on Sunday to take the series.
Cleanup spot
Kansas (17-3) hit nine home runs while winning two of three against Baylor. The Jayhawks, who are third in the nation in scoring at 10.4 runs per game, have gone deep 46 times through 20 games. Jackson Hauge, a transfer from Division II Mankato State, has a team-best 11. ... Oregon State's Ethan Kleinschmit has allowed just six hits and a run with two walks and 15 strikeouts in his last 11 2/3 innings over two appearances. ... Florida State left-hander Wes Mendes allowed no earned runs and struck out eight over a career-high seven innings as the Seminoles beat Boston College 6-2 Saturday to complete a three-game sweep. ... Texas Southern stole 17 bases in a 20-7 win over Mississippi Valley State on Friday, the most since Alabama State had the same number of steals against Tuskegee in 1991.

How much pressure is Kalen DeBoer under in 2025? Joel Klatt weighs in on Alabama coach

How much pressure is Kalen DeBoer under in 2025? Joel Klatt weighs in on Alabama coach How much pressure is Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer facing in 2025? Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt has some thoughts on DeBoer entering Year 2 in Tuscaloosa, which he shared Monday on his popular video podcast, "The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast." Klatt discussed 10 head coaches under pressure entering the 2025 season. For DeBoer, who went 9-4 in his first season as Alabama's coach last year, Klatt said he thinks that fans are still trying to be patient with Nick Saban's successor. "At this point, the fan base right now, just trying to be patient with Kalen DeBoer," Klatt said. "Year 1 was, let's face it, a little underwhelming for DeBoer. They were 9-4. First time not winning 10 games since 2007. That was obviously Nick Saban's first year. They're not going to sit around and wait for these 8-win, 9-win seasons." Klatt acknowledged that DeBoer was at a place where he's expected to win. "And not just win, but win big and win at the highest level of college football," he added. "Can't miss the playoff, in particular as we have expansion to 12 and we're going to be moving in 2026 and beyond to 14 or most likely 16 (teams)." Alabama missed the playoff last season in large part because of a 24-3 blowout loss to an Oklahoma Sooners team that had won only one conference game all year before the Crimson Tide's Nov. 23 debacle in Norman. 'He's got to win that game': Joel Klatt on the biggest game Kalen DeBoer faces in 2025 Where things could get "a little uncomfortable" for DeBoer in Year 2, Klatt believes, isn't in the Crimson Tide's Sept. 27 game against Georgia in Athens. Instead, Klatt believes the biggest pressure on DeBoer will be in Alabama's 'Third Saturday in October' rivalry clash with Tennessee on Oct. 18 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. "That's the moment on the schedule," Klatt said. "Home losses, first of all, are not good, and then they would be starting really tough and in a schedule that's really more backloaded. Obviously you've got Georgia, so let's just say that if you're losing to Tennessee, you've probably lost to Georgia. So that would be your second loss in the SEC. Then you still have to go to South Carolina and host LSU. "If you were to lose to Tennessee, who doesn't have Nico Iamaleava, and now you're about to go play LaNorris Sellers and Garrett Nussmeier, I think South Carolina and LSU are both better teams than Tennessee. John Mateer is better than any option that Tennessee has at quarterback, so you still have to play Oklahoma. You still have the Iron Bowl." In that scenario, Klatt believes a loss to Tennessee -- something Alabama hasn't suffered to the Vols at Bryant-Denny Stadium since 2003 -- would put the Crimson Tide in a position to have to run the table to avoid another 9-3 season and reach the College Football Playoff. "We saw what 9-3 did last year, even in the SEC," Klatt said. "We thought for a lot of years that in a 12-team playoff, a 9-3 (SEC) team would go to the playoff, and guess what? That didn't happen. So the pressure would go through the roof for Kalen DeBoer." Klatt closed his segment on DeBoer up by saying: "That Tennessee game at home, he's got to win that game. So the pressure index for Kalen DeBoer (is) they're trying to be patient, but patience would wear out real fast if they were to lose that game at home to Tennessee." Alabama opens the 2025 season at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee against Florida State on Aug. 30. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ABC. Tennessee won the 2024 national championship but was ousted by No. 3 Arkansas in the Fayetteville Super Regional. The Razorbacks, who have never won a baseball title, are the highest remaining seed in the tournament, and the only team in the top five left. Along with Arkansas, No. 6 LSU is still alive, which gives the SEC a quarter of the field despite entering the tournament with 13 teams. The past five champions have all emerged from the SEC, including LSU in 2023. Oregon State was the last non-SEC team to win in 2018 and is among the final eight standing. Here's what you need to know about the format of the College World Series: How many teams make College World Series? The College World Series field is made up of the final eight remaining teams in the 64-team NCAA baseball tournament bracket. The eight teams that compete in the CWS have advanced to Omaha after winning their respective regional and super regional series. How does College World Series work? Explaining CWS format Similar to the Women's College World Series, the CWS format is a double-elimination tournament comprised of two four-team brackets. In the CWS, each team restarts at a 0-0 record and is guaranteed at least two tournament games. Similar to the regional tournament format, the winner continues in the winner's bracket, while the loser fends off elimination until a winner emerges from the bracket. If a team starts 0-2, they are eliminated. However, if a team wins its first two games, it is in the semifinals and needs just one more win to clinch a spot in the best-of-three-game championship series. The minimum amount of games that can be played by a team in the entire CWS is five games – including the championship series – but the maximum is eight games, which makes a world of difference with the pitching available for each team. Unlike the WCWS format, the CWS does not have a team swap brackets if they emerge out of the loser's bracket. That means the CWS keeps two separate brackets, not a single, larger bracket. How does College World Series championship work? The College World Series championship series is a best-of-three series, which means that to emerge as the national champion, a team needs to win two games. If a team loses Game 1, it would mean they need to win Game 2 to force the "if necessary" Game 3. College World Series bracket 2025 Bracket 1 for the 2025 College World Series consists of No. 8 Oregon State, No. 13 Coastal Carolina, Louisville and Arizona. Bracket 2 for the CWS consists of No. 3 Arkansas, No. 6 LSU and UCLA. The winner of the Murray State and Duke game played on June 9 will determine the eighth and final team.
