Splash! New London exhibition dives into a century of swimming
LONDON, March 26 (Reuters) - From an Olympic gold medal to Pamela Anderson's "Baywatch" red bathing suit, a new exhibition dedicated to all things swimming opens at London's Design Museum this week.
"Splash! A Century of Swimming and Style" features more than 200 items that look at our love of water since the 1920s, be it at the lido, the pool or in nature.
'The show explores the last century of swimming through the lens of design," Amber Butchart, guest curator of the exhibition, told Reuters at a press preview on Wednesday.
"We begin in the pool, we move into lido, and then we end in nature and each of those sections allows us to explore different themes, whether it's materials and making, whether it is the... evolution of swimwear as a fashion object, or whether it is swimming in outdoor spaces and the architecture that allows access for that."
A variety of colourful swimwear from various decades takes centre stage, including a 1950s bikini and a selection of 1980s Speedo briefs alongside an edition of the famed red suit Anderson wore to play lifeguard C.J. Parker in "Baywatch" in the 1990s.
Items date from a 1920s example of rental swimwear to more contemporary and adaptive designs.
Also on show are various items belonging to Olympians - including the first Olympic solo swimming gold medal won by a British woman as well as diver Tom Daley's Team GB trunks.
"Splash! A Century of Swimming and Style" runs from March 28 until August 17.

'There's teachers doing OnlyFans just the same way there's teachers drinking and taking drugs.' Kirsty's sexy sideline was exposed in December 2022 when a link to her 'Jessica Jackrabbit' profile on the adult subscription site was shared with schoolkids. Baywatch reboot underway as original bikini-clad series surges in popularity on streaming channels
The beach is back. The highly-anticipated Baywatch reboot is finally inching closer, two years after it was first announced. 'We're in advanced talks with Fox in the U.S. about the Baywatch reboot,' Fremantle's Bob McCourt told Deadline this week. The series was first announced in 2023 and officially landed at Fox a year later. Writing has been underway from Burn Notice creator Matt Nix, who was brought in this year to do rewrites. In addition to Burn Notice, Nix is known for working on the Turner & Hooch TV series, which was based on the 1989 film, and the True Lies series, based on the 1991 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. The reboot comes as the original Baywatch has surged in popularity on digital streaming platforms. Baywatch made its way into the digital era after Fremantle invested in clearing and replacing all the original music, along with remastering and relaunching the show. 'It hadn't been cleared for streaming. The music hadn't been cleared and it was also in standard definition. We made the decision to remaster all episodes into high definition and then clear the music… with a big upfront investment,' McCourt explained. 'It was a big risk that actually paid off 10 times over. Baywatch has sold to every territory and around the world, including to Amazon, Hulu, RTL in Germany, and France TV in France.' At its peak, Baywatch was the most-watched television series in the world, bringing in over one billion viewers each week. The series, which ran from 1989 to 1999, launched the careers of Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Yasmine Bleeth, and David Hasselhoff. A big budget remake film was released in 2017 starring Zac Efron, Dwayne Johnson, Priyanka Chopra, and Alexandra Daddario. Last year, many of the stars from the original series reunited for a tell-all Hulu documentary called After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun. Among the claims made in the exposé was that the actors were only paid $3,500 per episode. Erika Eleniak, who played lifeguard Shauni McClain from 1989 to 1992, recalled: 'I remember freaking out seeing my first paycheck after the taxes were taken out... how am I gonna live on this money?' Billy Warlock, who played lifeguard Eddie Kramer across the same time frame, added: 'There's not one rich actor on Baywatch. Everybody was disposable and if you didn't fit into their brand at the price they were paying you, you were gone.' Alexandra Paul, who played Lieutenant Stephanie Holden from 1992 to 1997, noted: 'The Baywatch budget was so much smaller than all the other shows that were filming at the time.' Several members of the cast reportedly had to take pay cuts when the NBC show was saved from cancellation in syndication, but David Hasselhoff - who produced and starred as lifeguard Mitch Buchannon from 1989–2000 - enriched himself off the rerun royalties. 'We are blessed to be in this business. We are blessed to have this job. We are blessed to be doing this interview. Why am I doing this documentary?' the 72-year-old veteran TV actor said. 'We're doing this documentary because Baywatch is the gift that keeps on giving. It's given me an incredible life.' One way Baywatch producers cut costs was by padding each episode full of their gratuitous montages full of hard bodies in tiny swimsuits on the beach. Speaking of which, the actresses' small red one-piece swimsuits got skimpier throughout the 12 seasons of Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Gregory J. Bonann's action drama. 'For me, that's when my comfort level went [down],' Eleniak lamented. 'The second year, I felt like necklines plunged.' Kelly Packard - who played lifeguard April Giminski among other roles between 1991–99 - added: 'It was ridiculous. You couldn't even function in it.'

Bridgerton star fights off prolific phone thief as crowds watch on
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Bridgerton actress Genevieve Chenneour bravely defended herself after being targeted by a prolific London criminal while getting lunch. The 27-year-old star's real-life drama was thoroughly modern as she fought off a phone thief in Joe & the Juice. Chenneour, who plays Clara Livingston in Netflix's beloved show, was waiting for her order at the chain cafe on Kensington High Street, London. The thief, who the Daily Mail identified as Zacariah Boulares, 18, quietly snuck up behind her and grabbed her phone, which was placed on the counter. Immediately, Chenneour sprang into action as she spun around and grabbed his arm while another man came to her aid. CCTV footage shows her freeing her phone from his grasp as she pushes him to the ground and fights back against the hooded criminal. In court on May 29, Boulares pleaded guilty to stealing her phone as well as assaulting another customer. The actress previously told the Mail: 'They didn't expect me to stand up for myself – but I did.' 'I was left with a concussion just before the Screen Actors Guild Awards and since then, I've felt constantly on edge,' she shared. 'Even my dog was traumatised – now, if anyone touches me, he panics and tries to protect me. Getting a coffee shouldn't be something you need your wits about you for.' Chenneour added that she was thankful to the staff in store who were 'incredible' during the incident, and she has returned to see since. She retrained as an actress after winning an Olympic scholarship to train for Team GB's artistic swimming team at the age of 15. Unfortunately an injury prevented her from going pro but after being a stunt double for underwater scenes in Gateway To The West she landed a role on Bridgerton. Boulares reportedly also threatened Aled Jones with a machete 18 months prior, as he stole the star's £17,000 Rolex watch while in West London. He was jailed for 14 months in a young offenders centre after the incident in October 2023, getting released 10 months early. At the hearing regarding Chenneour's case, he also admitted to stealing a handbag at a pizza restaurant in London's West End in January this year. In a message on her Instagram, the Bridgerton debutante thanked fans for their support after the attack. 'I'm okay and incredibly grateful he won't be able to harm anyone else,' she said. 'I am, however, finding it difficult to feel safe going out – especially after being repeatedly threatened with being stabbed in the face.' Chenneour revealed that the man at the end of the video had threatened to stab her, turning it into a 'life or death' situation'in her mind'. This second man has been released due to a lack of evidence and won't be going to court, according to the star. A spokesman for the Met Police said: 'Police were called to a restaurant on Kensington High Street on Saturday, 8 February following reports of a theft and an assault. 'CCTV showed the suspect stealing a phone from the table and then assaulting a separate member of the public who confronted him. More Trending 'The victim of the assault was kicked and punched before the suspect left the premises. 'CCTV enquiries identified Zacariah Boulares as the suspect and he was arrested. Boulares, 18, was charged with common assault and theft.' View More » He will be sentenced later this month. Got a story?
