VW's Wolfsburg plant may move to four-day week from 2027, works council says
Volkswagen's restructuring of its Wolfsburg plant from 2027 to make way for EV-only production could result in a temporary four-day working week at the plant, works council chief Daniela Cavallo told workers on Tuesday.
Cavallo, a central figure in negotiations with management last year over cost cuts, said unions had agreed minimum capacity utilisation for the transition period, but urged workers to take extra shifts in the run-up to compensate for the likelihood of fewer working hours in years to come.
"We have to make provisions now so that we can draw on them later ... From 2027 onwards, a temporary
four-day week
is not an unreasonable scenario," Cavallo said.
Volkswagen's deal struck with unions last December to cut costs in Germany included moving production of the combustion engine Golf from Wolfsburg to Mexico from 2027, prompting concern among some employees at the carmaker's headquarters over the future of the plant.
Cavallo sought to assure workers on Tuesday that the plant's future was in safer hands via plans to produce the electric Golf, as well as a successor to its T-Roc compact SUV, by the end of the decade, pointing to the steady decline in demand for the combustion engine version of the iconic VW car.
Golf production globally, most of which was concentrated in Wolfsburg, has declined from over a million in 2015 to just over 300,000 in 2024, a graph compiled by the works council and seen by Reuters showed, with just 250,000 cars forecast for this year.
"The trend is an unstoppable decline ... the Golf must go to Mexico! Sooner or later. Otherwise, our plant will eventually find itself at the bottom of these statistics I just showed," Cavallo said, according to comments published on the company intranet and seen by Reuters.

Trump Said He 'Could' Forgive Musk In An Interview, Before X Boss Apologised
US President Donald Trump said in an interview recorded on Monday, for podcast Pod Force One, that he 'could' fix the relationship with billionaire Elon Musk. 'Look, I have no hard feelings. I was really surprised that that happened. He went after a bill that's phenomenal. He just — I think he feels very badly that he said that, actually.' Answering if he could reconcile with Musk, and forgive him, he said, 'I guess I could'. This comes before Musk had publicly apologised for his social media posts about Trump. "I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far," he wrote. The clash was sparked by Musk's denunciation of the Trump administration's proposed spending bill, a law seen as central to Trump's domestic agenda during his second term. Musk labelled the bill a "disgusting abomination" and urged political retribution against Republican lawmakers who backed it. After Musk's stint as the special government advisor associated with DOGE ended on May 30th, he took to social media to share his true feelings about the bill. Speaking to NBC News on Saturday, Trump warned Musk of "very serious consequences" should the billionaire follow through on funding primary challengers against sitting Republican lawmakers. "He'll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that," Trump said, while declining to specify what those consequences might entail. He also made clear that reconciliation was not on the table. "I have no intention of speaking to him," Trump said. The tensions reached their peak when Musk published a series of incendiary posts linking Trump to the former financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Per Reuters, sources close to Musk had said that his anger had started to subside, and that he may want to repair his relationship with the president. After Musk lambasted his flagship bill, Trump said in the podcast that he was not happy. 'It's the best thing we've ever signed in this country. When he did that, I was not a happy camper.' Errol Musk, the Tesla chief's father said that the two men were fighting because they were both 'tired and stressed'.

India working on indigenous AI-powered telecom technologies: DoT official
New Delhi: Artificial intelligence will serve as a foundational technology for future networks, with AI-native systems enabling new services like immersive experiences, autonomous operations and integrated sensing, a DoT official has said. Sanjeev K Bidwai, Member (Technology), Department of Telecommunications , on Wednesday said institutions like C-DoT, IITs and other leading R&D centres are working on indigenous AI-powered telecom technologies , actively contributing to international standards through platforms like ITU-T, ITU-R and 3GPP. "According to ITU-R's vision document M.2160, AI will be a key enabler for future networks, from intelligent radio interface management to cross-domain orchestration and personalised service delivery. " AI native networks will not only manage complexity but will unlock new service frontiers, immersive digital experiences, autonomous systems, integrated sensing and on-demand slicing for multi-tasks. This evolution is not just technological, it is strategic," he said. India is home to one of the world's largest and most dynamic telecom markets, offering a rich and diverse testing ground for AI native solutions, Bidwai said during the 3rd meeting of the ITU-T focus group on AI native for telecommunication networks here. India's expanding AI startup ecosystem, backed by a supportive policy framework in AI, data governance and digital public infrastructure, makes it ready and a true global leader in shaping the future of AI native networks. "IIT Jodhpur, in partnership with the Centre for Development of Telematics (CDOT), is developing AI frameworks for automated network management for detection and diagnostics. "This includes establishing a real-time 5G and beyond testbed compliant with ORAN standards. Further, DOT has signed a letter of intent with ITU to explore AI-driven digital twin technologies for infrastructure planning," Bidwai said. He said DoT is positioning India at the forefront of AI native networking, fostering innovation and contributing to the evaluation of intelligent autonomous telecommunication networks.
