Anti-Scam Taskforce Alerts Public To TikTok Based Investment Scheme

The Anti-Scam Taskforce is alerting the public to a series of TikTok videos that is luring Fijians into what appears to be a high risk online 'business opportunity' disguised as a legitimate overseas investment. Circulating widely on social media, the scheme encourages individuals to pay upfront joining and subscription fees with promises of fast, passive income and weekly earnings. It uses trendy buzzwords like 'spillover' and promotes the idea that financial success can be achieved simply by recruiting others.
What makes this particularly dangerous is that the scheme is disguised as a multi level marketing scheme that utilises health products as a means of creating value. However, the model heavily relies on recruitment of others as a key source of income, an approach that closely resembles pyramid style schemes. Consumers are pressured to act quickly, often being told to 'pay first' or 'message to join,' without receiving transparent information upfront. While it may appear appealing during tough economic times, such setups are unsustainable and often collapse, leaving newer recruits at a financial loss.
It is also concerning that the scheme's promoters say they are based in New Zealand, yet appear to be aggressively targeting Fijians rather than its domestic market (offering the program to their own local population), which raises further suspicions.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, and Chair of the Anti-Scam Taskforce, Honourable Manoa Kamikamica, stressed the urgent need for public awareness. 'Digital scammers are getting smarter, bolder, and more creative,' he said. 'These scams play on people's hopes and financial anxieties. If a stranger online is offering you easy money with no effort and encouraging you to recruit others to earn more, stop right there. If it looks too good to be true, it most definitely is.'
Consumer Council of Fiji CEO, Ms. Seema Shandil, also issued a strong warning. 'Social media has become the new playground for scammers. Platforms like TikTok, and AI technology, are being used to spread fastmoving frauds, especially targeting younger and digitally active users,' she said. 'Consumers must be cautious. If someone is asking you to invest money with vague promises or unclear details, question everything. Real investments are transparent, regulated, and never rely on how many people you bring in.'
Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission CEO, Ms. Senikavika Jiuta, added that the public must remain vigilant. 'What we are witnessing is the evolution of scams into sophisticated digital traps, with everyday Fijians especially vulnerable, since these are carefully engineered to exploit our trusting nature and bypass any suspicions,' she said. 'These are not random acts, they are calculated attempts to defraud you. Never take anything at face value and always verify directly with the relevant authorities. We are tracking patterns, identifying offenders, and working with our partners in the Anti-Scam Taskforce to ensure those responsible are held to account. But no regulation can replace personal caution, so please think before you click, share, or invest.'
Unlike traditional scams, this one is wrapped in engaging video content, short, sharp, and persuasive. It thrives on shares, likes, and silence. The more it spreads, the more victims it claims. The Taskforce is now considering cross border investigations and is also calling on social media users to report such content directly through platform tools to help curb its reach.
Fijians are strongly urged not to engage, not to forward such videos, and not to contribute financially to schemes that rely on secrecy and pressure. Anyone who believes they've been targeted or fallen victim to this scam should contact the Consumer Council of Fiji by emailing complaints@consumersfiji.org or by calling the toll-free helpline at 155.

Nelson woman avoids conviction for sharing image of partly naked woman

The charge of posting an intimate visual recording carried a maximum two-year prison term or a $50,000 fine. It was a 'salutary lesson' in how easy it was to end up facing criminal charges by sending digital material that could harm someone, police told NZME outside the Nelson District Court this week. 'This really was a perfect storm of factors that led to the offending,' defence lawyer Amanda Godwin said inside the court at the woman's hearing. Judge Stephen Harrop said the 'real culprit' was the person who shared it initially. Photo / Lewis Mulatero The defendant was charged after the victim complained to the police. Judge Stephen Harrop said it was a serious charge, and the court recognised the serious harm caused to people by the posting of such material, but the defendant had since suffered 'serious abuse' online, making her a victim of harmful social media too. She had suffered other consequences, including the loss of a contract linked to her business. The court heard that in January this year, the defendant met on TikTok an Australian man, who had received the intimate image from the complainant via Snapchat. He shared the image to a Messenger group of about 13 people, to which the defendant belonged. Another member of the group 'doctored' the image to make it animated and shared it with the defendant, who sent it to the TikTok acquaintance to 'double check' that he had seen it. The person who doctored the image and shared it has been charged and will be sentenced in a South Island court next month. Judge Harrop said the 'real culprit' was the man who shared it initially, but he acknowledged that the victim was concerned about it having been reposted. He said the circumstances were 'very different' to someone surreptitiously taking an image and posting it, and that the woman who had taken the image and sent it was part of the equation. 'We have a situation where the victim put it out in the first place, which was intended for one person but was then published to a group of 13,' Judge Harrop said. 'It does mean the seriousness of the offending is less than what appeared.' He said the defendant had afterwards suffered a 'sustained campaign of harassment and abuse' online and that she too had become a victim. She had since been diagnosed with a mental health condition that was likely to make her act impulsively, which was recognised by a psychologist in the pre-sentence report writing process. The consequences of a conviction were therefore likely to be greater than they might be for someone more resilient, Judge Harrop said in granting a discharge without conviction. The defendant was ordered to make a $200 emotional harm payment to the victim. The judge also granted permanent name suppression. He said the public 'may well conclude' that the woman should have been convicted and that it was unfair to discharge her and then allow her name to be published, even though that did not automatically follow. 'I'm satisfied for the reasons you were granted interim name suppression, and a discharge without conviction, the test for final suppression has been met,' Judge Harrop said. SFO Leads AntiCorruption Taskforce Pilot To Strengthen Public Sector Resilience

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO), supported by the NewZealand Police and the Public Service Commission, today announced a joint AntiCorruption Taskforce and pilot programme to build a clearer, systemwide picture of the corruption and fraud risks across the public service. The Taskforce will be led by the SFO and draw on specialist counter fraud and enforcement expertise to assess the extent of the corruption and fraud risk. The Taskforce will work with a representative group of six public service agencies, Inland Revenue, Accident Compensation Corporation, the Department of Corrections, Ministry of Social Development, Land Information New Zealand, and Sport New Zealand, to complete an indepth selfassessment of their fraud and corruption control maturity. The six agencies will also report on the volume of corruption and fraud detected and prevented. SFO Chief Executive Karen Chang says, 'Tackling publicsector fraud and corruption is about safeguarding taxpayer funds and protecting New Zealanders' trust in government. By bringing frontline agencies and enforcement partners together, this will help build a clearer intelligence picture that can be used to lift system resilience and ensure we stay ahead of emerging threats such as insider threats, foreign interference and AIenabled fraud.' 'Many of the organisations in this pilot are already proactive members of our Counter Fraud Centre community. Their willingness to lift the hood and share data shows a strong tonefromthetop commitment to integrity. Together we'll create a baseline that informs more targeted prevention, better detection and, ultimately, stronger enforcement.' Public Service Commissioner Sir Brian Rochesays, 'New Zealand's reputation for integrity in government is hard-earned and must be protected. This taskforce will further strengthen our ability to detect and prevent fraud and corruption wherever and whenever it happens in the public sector.' NewZealand Police Commissioner Richard Chambers, says 'Corruption and serious fraud threaten the trust and integrity that underpin our society. By working together with agencies across government, this Taskforce will help us identify risks early and apply our collective enforcement expertise to keep the system strong and accountable.' The SFO acknowledges the leadership of Police Minister HonMark Mitchell and Public Service Minister HonJudith Collins in championing the Taskforce, and thanks the chief executives of the six pilot agencies for their partnership.
