Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit on Wednesday stressed on the growing importance of drones, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), in modern warfare and called for a unified push towards indigenous innovation.
Speaking at an event at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, Air Marshal Dixit spoke on the growing importance of UAVs, stating that their strategic significance has become widely recognised, especially after the success of Operation Sindoor.
'After Operation Sindoor's success… The strategic significance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAVs) has suddenly become known to each and every child in India," he said.
Air Marshal Dixit pointed out that drone technology is now a major topic of discussion, not just in India but globally, with extensive use seen in regions like the Middle East, Ukraine, and Russia.
He further stressed that while drones have added a 'new dimension in warfare", much of the technology currently used relies on components from abroad. 'What we have been seeing in the last few years of drone usage is that a lot of components were coming from outside."
'Industry has to do innovation and innovation and innovation. All scientific organisations have to contribute to indigenous military capability and they have to continue to help us and the academy has to do foundational research," he added.
Earlier in the day at the same event, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan also stressed the urgent need to modernise weapon systems. He said that 'today's warfare has to be fought with tomorrow's technology," underlining that relying on outdated weapons is no longer an option.
Chauhan praised the use of indigenous weapons in Operation Sindoor and urged greater investment in domestic defence production. He warned that dependence on imported technology weakens India's preparedness and called for reducing reliance on foreign sources for critical technologies.
The event, a one-day workshop organised by the Integrated Defence Staff in collaboration with the Centre for Joint Warfare Studies, saw large-scale participation from the defence industry and startups. The workshop included displays and demonstrations of adaptive solutions in an exhibition.

No safety for girls in TN, claims AIADMK chief Palaniswami

Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu), Jul 19 (PTI) AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday claimed crimes against women were increasing in Tamil Nadu and that even young girls were not safe. He alleged that criminals were getting emboldened and flayed the ruling DMK for not ensuring safety for girls and women. Addressing a rally here as part of his statewide campaign to 'protect people, and redeem Tamil Nadu", Palaniswami said, 'the culprit who allegedly raped a ten-year-old girl in Gummidipoondi is yet to be arrested. Young girls, women and even elderly persons are not safe in the DMK rule." 'Do you want such a government to continue?" the former CM asked, and the crowd replied with a thunderous 'no". Speaking at Vedaranyam, famous for the salt sathyagraha against the British, Palaniswami said people were 'disillusioned' on all fronts with the present DMK regime and 'they are ready for another Satyagraha – this time against the DMK to vote out that party in next year's Assembly election." Earlier, Palaniswami, accompanied by party seniors, visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Health, also known as the Velankanni church, lit a candle and offered prayers. While addressing a roadshow in Nagapattinam, he paused for a few minutes from his campaign vehicle till the Muslims in the neighbourhood completed their evening prayers. Bihar Poll Roll Review: 'Missing' Voter Count Touches 41.64 Lakh; 11,000 Not Traceable

Last Updated: The Election Commission also assured that in case any name has been added by mistake, left out, or there is any error in the draft electoral rolls, this can be fixed by August 30 The count of missing voters in Bihar has touched 41.64 lakh, while only 32.23 lakh enumeration forms are left to be collected as of Saturday. The special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls is underway in Bihar, with six more days for the July 25 deadline. 'The Election Commission is making all possible efforts to ensure that the remaining nearly 32 lakh electors are added to the draft Electoral Roll," the poll body announced on Saturday. The draft electoral rolls will be published on August 1. The booth-level officers (BLOs) have already completed three rounds of house-to-house visits and have established contact with the electors. 'A concerted effort by the entire electoral machinery along with yet another round of visits by the BLOs has also been started to establish contact with the remaining electors," the ECI said. The poll body also assured that in case any name has been added by mistake, has been left out, or there is any error in the draft electoral rolls, this can be rectified by August 30. The poll body also said that a total of 11,000 voters in the existing voter list are not traceable, up from nearly 7,000 listed on Friday. Out of the 41.64 lakh missing voters, 14.29 lakh are probably dead, up from 12.71 lakh listed till Friday. A total of 19.74 lakh voters have probably shifted permanently, up from the 18.16 lakh reported earlier. The number of voters who have registered at multiple places has increased from 5.92 lakh to 7.50 lakh. Over 88% forms digitised The ECI has also digitised over 88% (6.96 crore) of the enumeration forms as of date, up from 6.96 crore reported till Friday. The last date for disposing of claims and objections is September 25, and the final electoral rolls will be published on September 30. The ECI reminded the voters that if they are aggrieved by any decision of the ERO, they can appeal to the district magistrate and the chief electoral officer. Elections are likely to be held in Bihar around October-November, as the term of the assembly will end in November. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
