As Masataka Yoshida returns to lineup, could Red Sox deal from depth by trading Jarren Duran or Wilyer Abreu?

Do the Sox need to trade from a position of depth in order to manage playing time? Not necessarily. But they also can't ignore the fact that, in a scenario where one of those five outfield/DH options sits in any game against a righty, the team will be realizing something less than a player's full impact.

'It's something we have to think about,' Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said on NESN's '310 to Left' podcast. 'You never want to be in a position where you have to make a trade, and there's this very fine line between having the problem of an overcrowded roster and having enough depth to weather injuries and keep guys off their feet.

'I think there potentially could be some opportunities to make what I think people would call just like baseball trades, where you're using depth in one area to address a need in another,' he continued. 'And I think we'll be very open-minded about those things, but I don't think we're in a position where we have to make a trade.'

Even so, while the Sox won't necessarily feel compelled to make a deal, the 5-for-4 roster ratio has caught the attention of the league with just over three weeks left until the deadline. Scouts from a number of teams in recent weeks have been assigned to cover the Sox to prepare for the possibility that the club will trade an outfielder.
But Duran and Abreu are another story. While the Sox aren't believed to be shopping either player, multiple sources around the league described both as available, with the Sox willing to at least listen to offers on either player.
But listening isn't the same as dealing. The bar for a trade would be set extremely high — in a way that makes a trade before the deadline unlikely.
Though Duran has followed his 2024 All-Star performance by slipping to a .259/.315/.427 line with seven homers and 15 steals, he still possesses rare electricity and the ability to carry a team for weeks at a time, with game-changing ability as a hitter, runner, and defender. The 28-year-old is also under team control through 2028.

Abreu, who sat Tuesday's game against Rockies lefthanded starter Kyle Freeland, has a .261/.329/.502 line and a team-high 17 homers. After winning the Gold Glove in 2024, he's once again leading American League right fielders in Outs Above Average with four. (He ranks second in the AL in Defensive Runs Saved with eight.) And at 26, he's building towards his peak at a time when he's making little more than the league minimum (he won't be eligible for arbitration until after the 2026 season) and won't be eligible for free agency until after the 2029 campaign.

Given the talent and remaining years of control of both players, the Sox seem unlikely to trade either for anything short of an impact big leaguer in return — and in particular, one who was both under team control for multiple years and addressed a roster and organizational shortcoming.

Is there a scenario in which the Sox swapped Abreu or Duran for a No. 2 or No. 3 starter with multiple years of remaining control? Sure.
But is it realistic that such a deal could be consummated mid-season? While not impossible, that prospect seems unlikely.
And even with their coming crunch for playing time, the Sox almost surely would rather have a surplus — and have lineup members sit once or twice a week against righties — than deal away a valuable player for what they see as less than equal return, while compromising their outfield depth.
'It's not difficult. It's good to have a lot of good players on the same roster,' said Cora. 'We're going to be able to rest some guys and to match up later in games with guys that are everyday players, not starting certain days. And I think that's going to work to our advantage.'
For their part, amidst a stretch where the team's roster flexibility has helped catalyze an 86-run, 10-game stretch, the players seem open to adjustments to their playing time.

'It's really cool to see how many guys we can mix and match and cause havoc on the offensive side,' said Duran. 'I know [Cora] has a plan and trust him full tilt. Whatever he needs me to do, I'm going to do. . . . He's a good manager and he's been doing it and I trust him for whatever we need to do for the team.'

That is, of course, if the team doesn't end up dealing from a potential position of surplus — an outcome that is far from assured, but is at least a consideration.
'You can think about this as five guys for four spots, four guys for three spots. But when you do, when you play that out, you can say, 'Hey, each guy can get 75 percent, 80 percent of the at-bats. That's a pretty full season,' ' said Breslow. 'There are a number of ways that this can go [while keeping all of the outfielders on the roster] — but we're also going to explore what opportunities exist out there, and if there's a chance to make this team better in the short term and the long term, then we have to be open to it.'

Cubs Predicted To Trade For Two Stars In Huge Mock Deal With NL Club

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently pitched a blockbuster trade proposal that would send Arizona Diamondbacks stars Eugenio Suárez and Zac Gallen to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Ben Brown, Jaxon Wiggins, and Jonathon Long. "Acquiring Suárez and Gallen in one trade could be as good as it can possibly get for the Cubs. Suárez was an All-Star this year, ending the first half with 31 home runs and an OPS just a shade below .900," Rotman wrote. "He can play third base the rest of the way, giving the Cubs a major upgrade and allowing struggling top prospect Matt Shaw to get a much-needed reset in Triple-A. "Gallen is less of a sure thing, as he's in the midst of a down year, but his track record is exceptional, and he's got as much upside as any starter available. Replacing the injured Justin Steele for this season is a near-impossible task, but Gallen gives them the best chance to do so if he can revert to his former Cy Young-caliber form." NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 30: Zac Gallen #23 of the Arizona Diamondbacks looks on from the mound with teammates Eugenio Suarez #28 and catcher Gabriel Moreno #14 prior to leaveg a game against the New York Mets in the first inning at Citi Field on May 30, 2024 in New York City. MoreThis time of year, there are a lot of trade rumors circulating. Some of them don't always make a lot of sense, but this hypothetical deal seems to have the groundwork of a potential trade this month. The Diamondbacks will likely trade all of their expiring players, including Gallen and Suárez. The only issue here is that it's likely Arizona will land more for this pair of stars than what's suggested in the trade. Suárez is expected to be the best third baseman on the market and will likely require a haul to land by himself. Pair that with Gallen, and the Diamondbacks should be landing quite the prospect return. For the Cubs, acquiring both of these players in one deal would be the best-case scenario. Suárez and his potential 50-home run bat are the dream replacement for Matt Shaw at the hot corner. Gallen hasn't been incredible this season, but adding his arm to the rotation would certainly be an upgrade. More MLB: Luis Robert Jr. Trade? Why Latest Reds Trade Rumors Make Perfect Sense

All-Star Bounce swarms downtown Indy with 2,500 kids ahead of 2025 WNBA All-Star Game

Thousands of kids donned red WNBA All-Star T-shirts and grabbed free orange and white Wilson basketballs outside American Legion Mall, ready for the All-Star Bounce. The July 19 event, a half-mile dribble to the finish line at Monument Circle, sent waves of young athletes through downtown Indianapolis, cheered on by parents, volunteers, and a squad of Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders. Twelve-year-old Jillian Hawley led the pack, sprinting to the finish line well ahead of the crowd. 'It made sense I came in first,' she said, referencing the weekend dedicated to women's sports. 'And I play basketball.' Younger sister, Pippa Hawley, 10, was also dribbling her way through the course. The two were already buzzing about their next stop: the WNBA Live fan event at the Indiana Convention Center, where hands-on games, giveaways, and surprise appearances from players awaited the pair. For Addi Hanshew, 11, the Bounce was a moment to level up. 'My mom gets to take videos of me doing good, to see what I can work on,' she said. Her mom, Kara Jennett, was quick to praise her drive: 'She pushed herself all the way through.' Corey Wilson, senior vice president of community engagement for Pacers Sports & Entertainment, said he enjoys seeing events take place out in the Indianapolis community. 'It's good to be able to do events beyond what's happening at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and allow the youth in our community to enjoy the game of basketball for WNBA All-Star weekend," Wilson said. Families funneled into Monument Circle, where the All-Star energy continued. A live DJ spun music, kids raced to shoot baskets at pop-up hoops, and others cooled off with handheld fans and water breaks. Ella Miller, 13, gasped when she saw an unexpected surprise at the city's center. 'That's Paige! That's Paige!' she and her family shouted, pointing toward Paige Bueckers, the Dallas Wings point guard and All-Star player, as she walked into the InterContinental Hotel. Ella and her sister, Kylie, 10, were both wearing Bueckers shirts. The two had been in the right place at the right time when they stumbled upon the basketball player walking into the hotel lobby. 'I've been watching her since third grade,' Ella said, nearly in tears. 'I'm so proud of Paige.' More than just a fan, Ella once did an entire school project on Bueckers. 'She's literally my favorite person, not even just as a player,' she said. Ella plays point guard on her basketball team and proudly calls herself an 'OG fan' of Bueckers. 'Ella introduced me to Paige,' Kylie said. 'I play soccer, but I'm so happy,' she said about the energy around women's sports right now. As she was walking back to her car, Jaimie Kennedy, 39, reflected on her morning as an All-Star Bounce volunteer. 'I really enjoy giving back,' she said. 'I love seeing those little kids' faces and asking if they had fun. When their faces lit up, it made my day.' She said it's pure joy. Kennedy's kids, now 18 and 20, grew up playing sports, and she's a fan herself. For her, Indy was the perfect place to be this weekend.
