Arrow McLaren's Nolan Siegel cleared to race in Toronto

Yahoo3 days ago
Nolan Siegel missed Race 2 of the Iowa Speedway doubleheader after crashing during Saturday's Synk 275.
The 20-year-old lost control of his Dallara-Chevrolet exiting Turn 4 on lap 246 of 275 and hit the wall with enough force to suffer a mild concussion and punch a hole in the SAFER barrier.
He was ruled out of Sunday's Farm to Fresh 275 and scheduled for reevaluation later in the week.
Since then, Siegel has followed a regimented recovery program and was evaluated by IndyCar medical staff Thursday morning. He has now been cleared to return to the cockpit and will be back on track Friday on the streets of Toronto.
'Nolan has been cleared by the IndyCar Medical Team to drive this weekend in Toronto,' Arrow McLaren confirmed. 'He will pilot the No. 6 SmartStop Arrow McLaren Chevy in their first primary sponsorship race of the season. He's en route to Canada now and is expected to be trackside later today.'
The California native was expected to start from fifth place on Sunday at Iowa Speedway, after posting his second-best qualifying result of the season — part of a run that includes three consecutive top-10 starts. Heading into the races, his eighth-place finish at Road America remains his strongest performance so far.
Siegel currently sits 21st in the standings with 156 points, six ahead of rookie Louis Foster (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing), who holds the final spot in IndyCar's Leaders Circle program. The scheme provides bonus payouts to the top 22 full-time entries at the end of the season. Fellow rookie Robert Shwartzman (Prema Racing) is 23rd with 145 points and looking to break in.
Should Siegel be unable to complete the weekend, Linus Lundqvist will serve as reserve driver. The Swede, who raced for Chip Ganassi Racing last year taking two podiums and one pole position, qualified 24th and finished 13th in CGR's No. 8 car at Toronto in 2024.

Christopher Bell spins again at NASCAR Dover race, collects Noah Gragson, William Byron

Christopher Bell spun for a second time during the NASCAR Dover race on July 20. Bell, who had spun on Lap 260 during the July 20 Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Dover Motor Speedway, spun on the front stretch at Dover on Lap 393. The race had been red-flagged for 56 minutes after rain hit the speedway. Bell was racing Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin on the low side of the track. Bell got loose coming off Turn 4 and spun through the front stretch. He will be able to continue. Unlike the earlier crash where drivers missed Bell, two drivers were not able to avoid the No. 20 Toyota. Noah Gragson and William Byron both hit in the inside wall trying to avoid Bell. Both were running toward the front of the field and will drop out of the running. On the ensuing pit stop, Bell was hit with a pit road speeding penalty. Denny Hamlin survives rain delay, overtime finish to win for 2nd straight year at Dover

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Denny Hamlin went back-to-back at Dover Motor Speedway, holding a late lead through a rain delay and an overtime finish Sunday for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver's series-best fourth victory of the season. Hamlin won in the No. 11 Toyota for the second straight time at Dover to add to wins this season at Martinsville, Darlington and Michigan. Hamlin has 58 NASCAR Cup Series victories, leaving him, two short of Kevin Harvick for 10th on the career list. The 44-year-old Virginia driver might hit that mark this season as he chases his first career Cup championship. 'Winning here at Dover is super special to me,' Hamlin said. 'This is a place that I've not been very good at the first half of my career. To go back-to-back here the last two years is amazing.' Hamlin took the checkered flag days after he suffered a setback in court with his own 23XI Racing team's federal antitrust suit against NASCAR. On Thursday, a federal judge rejected a request from 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports to continue racing with charters while they battle NASCAR in court, meaning their six cars will race as open entries this weekend at Dover, next week at Indianapolis and perhaps longer than that in a move the teams say would put them at risk of going out of business. Hamlin vowed this weekend 'all will be exposed' if the case goes to its scheduled Dec. 1 trial date. The courtroom drama hasn't affected Hamlin's performance on the track. Hamlin held off JGR teammate Chase Briscoe for the victory. Hendrick Motorsports drivers took the next two spots, with Alex Bowman third and Kyle Larson fourth. Hamlin held off Kyle Larson down the stretch last season to earn the second of his three career wins at the Monster Mile. The first July Cup race at Dover since 1969 started with steamy weather and drivers battled the conditions inside the car during a relatively clean race until rain fell late and red-flagged the race with 14 laps left. Hamlin said the during the break he planned to change his firesuit — temperatures inside the car soared to 140 degrees. He also returned to the car after the 56-minute delay with old tires. Hamlin had enough to win at Dover and park the Toyota in victory lane. 'We've got a lot left,' Hamlin said. Up next It's off to Indianapolis Motor Speedway where Kyle Larson won last season on the oval after a four-year break on the road course. ___ AP auto racing:
