Nimisha Priya row: Mahdi family presses for execution, rejects 'settlement'

Following the deferment of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya's execution in Yemen, the brother of the deceased has stated that the family will accept nothing less than the execution of the convict.
The execution, which was originally scheduled for July 16, was postponed by local authorities in Yemen, according to sources.
Nimisha Priya, who is a native of Kollengode in Kerala's Palakkad district, was convicted of murdering her business partner and Yemeni citizen, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in July 2017.
Mahdi family demands death penalty
In a Facebook post, Abdelfattah Mahdi, the brother of Talal Abdo Mahdi, wrote in Arabic that despite mounting pressure on the family to accept reconciliation, their demand remains unchanged: retribution, meaning the execution of Priya.
'What is achieved and heard today from mediation and attempts for peace is nothing new or surprising. There have always been efforts to mediate. This is normal and expected... But the pressure has not changed anything in us. Our demand is retribution, nothing else,' Mahdi said, according to a report by HT Media.
'Delay won't flex, pressure won't move us, and blood cannot be bought. The truth is not forgotten. Retribution will come, no matter how long the road takes. It is just a matter of time and with God's help (it will happen),' Abdelfattah Mahdi said.
Intervention of Indian Muslim leader
Nimisha Priya's execution was deferred following the intervention of Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar — also known as Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad — in Yemen. The government of Indian had made last-minute efforts to delay the execution.
According to a report by news agency PTI, Sheikh Abubakr could secure a postponement of the execution with the help of his Yemeni Sufi scholar associate, Habib Umar bin Hafiz, who was likely to visit the Mahdi family in Dhamar on Tuesday to discuss the case.
Indian government's efforts in the case
The Indian government earlier informed the Supreme Court that it had made serious efforts in recent days to gain more time for Priya's family to reach a 'mutually agreeable' resolution with the Mahdi family. 'There is nothing more that can be done,' Attorney General R Venkataramani, appearing for the Centre, told the court. 'There's a point till which the government of India can go. We have reached that.'
The Indian side had also explored the possibility of securing Priya's release through 'diyat' — or the payment of 'blood money' — but those negotiations faced obstacles.
In 2020, Priya was sentenced to death by a Yemeni court, and in November 2023, the country's Supreme Judicial Council rejected her appeal. The 38-year-old nurse is currently imprisoned in Sana'a, the Yemeni capital, which remains under the control of the Iran-backed Houthi group.

Russian oil giant Rosneft says EU sanctions on Indian unit unjustified and illegal

Russian oil giant Rosneft on Sunday termed as unjustified and illegal the sanctions that the EU has slapped on its Indian unit, Nayara Energy. "Rosneft Oil Company considers the European Union's decision to impose restrictive measures on the Indian refinery of Nayara Energy as unjustified and illegal," it said in a statement. "These sanctions are yet another example of extraterritorial implementation of politically motivated restrictions that blatantly violate international law and infringe on the economic interests of a sovereign state." ALSO READ: India's $15 bn oil exports to EU at risk amid new Russia sanctions The European Union on Friday imposed sanctions on the Indian oil refinery of Rosneft and lowered the oil price cap, as part of a new raft of measures against Russia over its war in Ukraine. The fresh sanctions package on Russia included new banking restrictions and curbs on fuels made from Russian crude oil. The lowered oil price cap - currently set at USD 60 per barrel - means Russia will be forced to sell its crude at reduced rates to buyers like India. As the second-largest purchaser of Russian oil, India stands to benefit from this move. Russian crude currently accounts for nearly 40 per cent of India's total oil imports. "Rosneft emphasizes that it is not a controlling shareholder of Nayara Energy - the Company's share in the authorized capital of the enterprise is less than 50%," the Russian firm said, adding Nayara is managed by an independent Board of Directors. Rosneft said the European Union's grounds for imposing sanctions are completely far-fetched and false in content. "Nayara Energy is an Indian legal entity whose economic activity is aimed at the development of its assets. The entity is taxed entirely in India. "Nayara Energy shareholders have never received dividend payments and the accumulated profits have been used exclusively for the development of the refinery and petrochemicals and the company's retail network in India," it said. The Nayara Energy refinery is a strategically important asset for the Indian energy industry, providing a stable supply of petroleum products to the country's domestic market. "The imposition of sanctions against the refinery directly threatens India's energy security and will have a negative impact on its economy," Rosneft said. "Such actions of the European Union demonstrate complete disregard not only for international law, but also for the sovereignty of third countries. "Rosneft views these sanctions as part of the EU's destructive policy aimed at destabilizing global energy markets. The restrictions on Nayara Energy are yet another example of the EU's use of unfair competition practices," it said. Rosneft said it is counting on the fact that Nayara Energy will take measures to protect the legitimate interests of its shareholders and consumers, which will be supported by the governments of Russia and India.
