Tirupati temple board suspends 4 employees for ‘practising other religions'

Indian Express15 hours ago
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) which manages Andhra Pradesh's Sri Venkateswara temple has suspended four of its employees based on allegations that they are non-Hindus and practising other religious faiths.
The suspended employees are B Elizar, deputy executive engineer (quality control); S Rosi, staff nurse, BIRRD hospital; M Premavati, grade-1 pharmacist, BIRRD hospital, and Dr G Asuntha of SV Ayurveda Pharmacy.
These employees are believed to have violated the institution's code of conduct and acted irresponsibly in their duties while representing and working for a Hindu religious organisation, the TTD said in a statement.
After examining a report submitted by the TTD Vigilance Department and other evidence, departmental action was taken against them as per the rules and the four employees were immediately suspended, it said.
The suspensions are the latest in a wider effort to transfer or suspend officials belonging to other faiths from the TTD.
On July 8, the TTD had suspended assistant executive officer A Rajasekhar Babu stating that he attends local church prayers every Sunday in his hometown Puttur in Tirupati district.
TTD sources said that the board has taken a decision not to allow any non-Hindu to work in the TTD, especially in the temples governed and managed by it.
After the Telugu Desam Party-led NDA government came to power in June last year, the TTD has transferred several non-Hindu employees working in various positions in the TTD. In February this year, the TTD transferred 18 employees for allegedly practicing and participating in non-Hindu religious activities. The transferred employees include six teachers at various TTD educational institutes, a deputy executive officer (welfare), an assistant executive officer, an assistant technical officer (electrical), a hostel worker, two electricians and two nurses.
On November 18, in its maiden meeting of the TTD under new chairman B R Naidu, the board had decided to transfer non-Hindus and ban political speeches on its premises.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta keen to promote art, culture of other states

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has emphasised the importance of promoting and expanding the art and culture of various states across the national capital, an official said on Sunday. She called for events such as women's art exhibitions, artist camps, music and dance festivals, theatre performances, and religious celebrations like Chhath Puja and Durga Puja to be organised across the city to increase public participation. The Chief Minister also said that efforts will be made to explore possibilities for teaching non-Hindi languages to children in Delhi, enabling them to understand the social and cultural identities of other states. At a recent meeting at the Delhi Secretariat, CM Gupta discussed measures to enrich Delhi's cultural landscape and involve all sections of society in cultural activities. 'Delhi is not merely the capital city but also a reflection of the country's cultural identity,' she said. 'We want the art and culture of various states to reach every street and for every individual to feel connected to it,' she said, adding that theatre and folk arts are powerful tools for spreading awareness and information, often more effectively than other forms of communication. The meeting was also attended by Minister of Art, Culture and Languages Kapil Mishra, as well as various secretaries, deputy secretaries, and senior officials from different agencies. CM Gupta noted that the Department of Art, Culture and Languages can play a vital role in this endeavour by broadening the scope of its programmes and activities. According to the Chief Minister, the department must take its initiatives beyond designated locations and bring them to the general public to enhance public participation. She directed officials to ensure that regional festivals celebrated in Delhi include artists from the respective states, as this would help generate greater public interest in these events. The Chief Minister noted that while the Department of Art, Culture and Languages has long promoted Delhi's cultural heritage, its reach must now be expanded. Highlighting Delhi's diverse population, she emphasised the growing celebration of regional festivals and directed officials to involve artists from different states in these events.

Task force formed to find out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Tripura: CM

Agartala, Jul 20 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday said his government has constituted a special task force to find out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the northeastern state. His comment comes a day after Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma revealed the formation of a special task force by the West Tripura district police to 'detect and deport' the illegal immigrants staying in the state, to their country of origin. 'The Centre has already decided to accept those people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who have taken refuge in India before 2014 due to religious persecution, he told the reporters. He was referring to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which paves the way for granting Indian nationality to undocumented non-Muslim migrants — Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians — from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who came to India before December 31, 2014. 'There are attempts to create confusion on the issue. We have already constituted a special task force to identify if there is any influx or infiltration after December 2014. We will not accept those who came after December 2014 as per the Centre's decision and have been staying here illegally," he said. Notably, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has invited a delegation of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) for a meeting on July 23 to discuss the concerns raised by it about the possible enrolment of illegal immigrants in Tripura's electoral rolls. Debbarma, in a social media post on Saturday, said, 'After we raised our concerns about possible enrolment of illegal immigrants in Tripura's voter roll and demanded a Bihar-like Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the Election Commission of India has called us for a meeting on July 23 to discuss these issues." Don't take Hindus for granted: Bandi Sanjay Kumar

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar accused the present and previous ruling parties of eyeing the 12% Muslim vote share while taking the Hindu community for granted. 'They think Hindus will remain divided. Every Hindu must now reflect on this,' he said, alleging that the ruling parties were denying Hindus the basic religious respect in temples like offering an 'aarti'. The Minister was addressing a large gathering at the Simhavahini temple at Lal Darwaza on Sunday, after completing a day-long temple yatra across key localities including Moosarambagh, Akbar Bagh, Saidabad, Kurmaguda, Madannapet, Rakshapuram, Gowlipura, Akkanna Madanna, and Haribowli. He said that only a BJP government would change this reality. 'We are the ones who pay taxes. We are the ones who pay bills. We are the ones who fill the government's treasury. Then why should we be in a pitiable condition, where we have to beg every year for funds for our temples and Bonalu?' 'If BJP comes to power in Telangana, Hindus will no longer have to 'beg' for funds for temples or festivals,' he said, and declared that a dedicated fund would be allocated for all Hindu festivals. Mr. Sanjay also said that Hindus who left Old City due to 'terrorist bombings and jihadi gangs', should return now without fear. 'Old City belongs to all, and it is the government's responsibility for protection to all'. He said that there was a visible change in the atmosphere around the Bhagyalakshmi temple near Charminar, that had become a symbol of Hindu resurgence in Hyderabad. 'There was a time when people feared wearing a bindi or holding a saffron flag near Charminar,' he claimed.
