The fact is, Tesla is testing the market after talks with GoI over lowering import duties stalled. Additional production in India may not be possible, with the EV-maker facing glut in its plants worldwide. So, Tesla will be competing for the high-end Indian market against luxury carmakers. The mass market for EVs is protected by Indian auto firms that have made inroads into electric mobility. Chinese EV makers, which are piling pressure on Tesla in a bruising price war, are gaining presence here.
Market testing is critical for Tesla, whose cars come bundled with bespoke battery charging infra. India also represents a difficult market for autonomous vehicles, on which Elon Musk is placing a big bet. Prospects of a favourable tax dispensation to test Tesla's products in India brightened with Musk's proximity to Donald Trump. But they now are ex-es who didn't part well at all. India is working on a trade deal with the US that should improve market access for US companies. But Tesla is unlikely to receive special treatment, unless it is willing to commit investments in the country.
Tesla follows Apple in setting up retail touchpoints in India, but their circumstances are in stark contrast. There is a significant market share for iPhones in India, and Apple has set up a manufacturing export base here. The size of Tesla's addressable market is much smaller, and it has export capacities idling. Tesla has a more diversified manufacturing presence than Apple, which is cutting down on its Chinese concentration. Indian policy designed to attract foreign investment will not be equally effective for the two companies. Some degree of customisation is required to get iconic brands to set up production in the country. Tesla could find itself in a better place in India down the road.

Fishers' body slams Govt for allowing deep-sea vessels
The All India Deep Sea Fishers' Association has come out against the Union Fisheries Ministry's decision to allow large vessels to operate in deep-sea areas beyond India's sovereign maritime zone. In a letter to Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj Rajeev Ranjan Singh, the association said the decision will impact the fortunes of small-scale traditional fishing vessels. Association chief Charles George said the decision to allow Indian-owned vessels in deep sea was part of the Blue economy policy of the Union Government unveiled in 2020. 'We request the Union government… revitalise small-scale and traditional fishermen through modernisation, cooperative strengthening and fair subsidies.'' Urging the government to reject the push for industrial deep-sea vessels, the association said such a move will only worsen ecological and economic crises. George said as per Central government data, 3,14,677 fishing vessels operate within India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). 'However, sustainable fishing practices require only 93,287 vessels… Yet, we cannot outright claim that we have crossed sustainability thresholds because we have predominantly small-scale and traditional vessels.'' The body rejected the government stand that allowing large vessels for deep-sea fishing will help tap the hitherto untapped resources. 'Only 4 per cent of India's fish wealth lies in deep waters… due to scarcity in deep waters, these vessels eventually encroach into near-shore zones. Now, with 1.5 to 4 lakh-watt LED lights at the huge vessels attracting fish from coastal waters, the pressure on already strained near-shore ecosystem will intensify… devastate thousands of small-scale boats operating in deep waters, where 64,000 fishermen are working,'' said the association chief.

Textile industry flags risks from cotton MSP hike
Ahmedabad: The central govt recently increased the minimum support price (MSP) for kapas (raw cotton), raising rates across all categories — medium staple from rs 7,460 to rs 7,560 per quintal, medium long staple from rs 7,710 to rs 7,860, long staple from rs 8,010 to rs 8,110, and extra long staple from Rs 8,310 to Rs 9,310. While aimed at supporting farmers, the hike has sparked concern among Gujarat's textile industry, which fears that higher raw material costs will erode India's competitiveness in the global market. Industry leaders argue that enhancing cotton productivity, rather than simply raising MSP, offers a more sustainable path for increasing farmers' incomes without straining manufacturers. "India holds 37% of global cotton acreage but contributes only 23% to production," said Jayesh Patel, senior vice-president of the Spinners' Association of Gujarat. "Focusing on yield improvement is key if India wants to lead globally. " Manufacturers are also seeking the removal of import duties on cotton. "Indian cotton is now the costliest globally, which directly affects our competitiveness," said Bharat Chhajer, former chairman of PDEXCIL. "At a time when global brands are considering India as an alternative to Bangladesh, expensive cotton makes us less viable." Industry experts are urging the govt to balance farm support with safeguards for the textile sector. Removing import duties, boosting productivity, and easing logistics costs remain key demands.

India-US interim trade deal talks: Both sides wrap up extended round of trade negotiations
India and the US have concluded a week-long round of trade negotiations aimed at finalising an interim trade deal seen as crucial for India to avoid reciprocal tariffs and gain an edge over its Asian peers, The Indian Express has learned. This round of talks assumes significance as the US has set a fresh deadline of August 1 to implement reciprocal tariffs. While US President Donald Trump reiterated that a deal with India is close, India could face tariffs of up to 26 per cent if both countries fail to reach an agreement. Government officials have maintained that India is aiming to sign a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by the end of the year, which would provide market access in labour-intensive sectors and ensure a significant tariff differential compared to its Asian peers. Talks have encountered complications over agriculture, with the US seeking market access for genetically modified (GM) products such as soya and corn, along with broad-based access across sectors. However, the farmers' body Indian Coordination Committee of Farmers Movements (ICCFM) has urged the government to exclude all aspects of agriculture from the US trade deal in order to protect the interests of Indian farmers. Government officials have said that, as of now, only US baseline tariffs of 10 per cent and sectoral tariffs on steel and aluminium — along with fentanyl-related tariffs on China — have come into effect. 'These have resulted in higher duty collections for the US, and their imports from China and specific sectors have gone down,' an official said. While sectoral tariffs — such as 50 per cent on steel, aluminium and copper — are already disrupting India's exports to the US, Trump has also threatened steep tariffs on BRICS countries over their challenge to the US dollar and has warned of duties on buyers of Russian oil.
