Roglic loses time as Verona wins Giro stage 15

BBC News25-05-2025
Spaniard Carlos Verona won stage 15 of the Giro d'Italia with a long-range solo attack on Sunday as former champion Primoz Roglic lost significant time on the rest of his general classification rivals.Slovenian Roglic, one of the pre-race favourites, shipped a minute and a half to the rest of the contenders for the leader's pink jersey after being dropped on the final climb with over 20km to go.The 35-year-old Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe rider tumbled from fifth to 10th in the overall standings and is now three minutes 53 seconds behind race leader Isaac del Toro.Lidl-Trek rider Verona, 32, held off a chasing pack formed by some of his breakaway companions to secure his first Grand Tour stage win, and only his second pro victory."I certainly didn't come to the Giro thinking that I could win a stage and I was happy with that," said Verona, who finished 22 seconds ahead of Florian Stork with Christian Scaroni in third."I was here in full support for [points leader] Mads Pedersen and Giulio Ciccone [who did not start on Sunday after crashing on stage 14]."Everything changed yesterday when we lost Cicco. Today is my day. I didn't want to do it for me but I wanted to do it for the team, knowing how much Giulio had worked for this race."Britain's Simon Yates of Team Visma-Lease a Bike remains second in the overall standings behind Mexican Del Toro, with the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider taking a lead of one minute and 20 seconds into the final week.Meanwhile, Swiss Marlen Reusser won the final time trial stage at the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas to wrap up overall victory in the Women's World Tour event. It secured back-to-back stage wins for the Movistar rider, who won the general classification by almost two minutes. Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini finished second in the general classification with Dutch rider Yara Kastelijn third.

Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey joins Roma on loan with option to buy as out-of-favour Jamaica star looks to revive form in Serie A

Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey has joined Roma on loan for the 2025-26 season, with the Jamaica international looking to revive his form in Serie A. The deal reportedly includes a £19million option to make the move permanent. Roma, managed by Gian Piero Gasperini, finished fifth in Serie A last season and have already added Brighton striker Evan Ferguson to their squad this summer. Bailey, 28, joined Villa from Bayer Leverkusen in a £25m deal in 2021 and has since made 144 appearances, scoring 22 goals. He was a regular starter under Unai Emery in his first two seasons, but injuries and form limited his minutes in the latter stages of last year. Bailey enjoyed his best season in 2023-24, hitting a career-high 14 goals and 13 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions. Last term, as Villa reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, he scored and assisted in the last-16 win over Club Brugge before Emery's side were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain. But it proved to be a rare highlight in an otherwise disappointing campaign that saw him register only two goals in 38 games and slip down the pecking order as Villa reinforced their attack. The winger signed a new contract in February 2024 running until 2027, but the option-to-buy clause in his Roma loan means this season could prove decisive in shaping his long-term future. Bailey's switch also continues a busy summer of outgoings at Villa Park, with midfielder Leander Dendoncker joining Real Oviedo and reports linking other squad players with exits before the deadline. Roma will hope Bailey can rediscover the spark that made him such a threat in the Bundesliga.

Gewan secures Acomb honours for Andrew Balding

The grey was a 11-2 chance in the seven-furlong Group Three, and ran prominently from the off when racing in the slipstream of the leader May Angel in the early stages. In the last two furlongs the colt began to progress, and in the final furlong he established a lead that he then fought hard to maintain as Aidan O'Brien's Italy, the eventual runner-up, sought to gain ground before going down by a length and a half. Charlie Appleby's Distant Storm, the 11-10 favourite, pulled hard throughout the race and was eventually third. Balding said: 'He's a horse we've always liked from the moment he came into the yard and he was very well bought by Billy Jackson-Stops for not big money really (€80,000). 'He's a son of Night Of Thunder who has done everything right since the first day and we liked the way he won at Newbury and we were always keen to come here. 'I think PJ was quite taken by him and his attitude and maybe felt he had a little more left. 'I think he'll stay a mile no problem next year but we'll probably stick at seven this year.' Paddy Power make Gewan an 8-1 shot for the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in October and Balding added: 'It's possible he could head to the Dewhurst next. 'There's a lot of two-year-old races to be run between now and then, anything is possible at the moment. I don't know if we've any better than him but other people probably have, so we'll see how things play out.' Italy could also be handed a Group One target in the future, with O'Brien satisfied with his performance. He said: 'He ran very well and he's a lovely, big horse. Ryan (Moore) said he jumped a little bit slow and the horse that jumped in front of him took him an inch or two back further than he wanted to be. 'Ryan said he had to expose him very early, but he ran a very good race, he's a lovely horse in the making and he will progress. 'There's many options for him. We had the choice of running here or in the Futurity Stakes (at the Curragh) and obviously we picked to come here. From the Futurity you can go to the National Stakes, but it depends what happens with the others.'

Ferrari chief admits he and Hamilton 'stupidly' underestimated challenge of new partnership

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has admitted he and Lewis Hamilton underestimated how difficult finding success during the Brit's first year with the Prancing Horse would be. Hamilton, 40, has often cut a frustrated figure since leaving Mercedes - where he won six of his seven Drivers' Championships - earlier this year. He's struggled to emulate the form he showed at the Silver Arrows since joining his new team however, even failing to notch a single podium with a best finish of fourth place on three occasions. Vasseur, Hamilton's new chief principal, has now speculated as to why the pair's working relationship is yet to flourish. 'Lewis and I, we collectively probably underestimated the change of environment and the fact that he spent for me 20 years in the same team,' he told The Race. 'McLaren and Mercedes, and then he moved to Mercedes, an English team, same engine guys, that same culture and so on. 'So he spent 2006 to 2024, 18 years, in that same environment and then he arrived at Ferrari, and we were stupidly expecting that he will have everything under control. 'He's not the guy who changed team every two years. 'Culturally speaking, there is a bigger difference between Ferrari and Mercedes than between Mercedes and McLaren. And this we underestimated.' Hamilton's struggles on the circuit have often resulted in him venting his frustrations to the media post-race, the most recent example of which occurred in Hungary. After qualifying just 12th on the grid, the legendary driver described his performance as 'useless', even claiming that Ferrari should look for a new driver. Such outbursts were criticised by Vasseur in an interview earlier this week. He told German publication Auto Motor und Sport: 'Stay calm. 'Build on the fact that he has already taken the first step. Don't let things like what happened in Budapest get you down. 'Lewis is very self-critical. He is always extreme in his reactions. Sometimes he is too hard on the car, sometimes on himself. He wants to get the most out of himself and everyone in the team. 'You have to calm him down and explain to him that in Q2 [in Hungary] he was only a tenth of a second behind the driver [Leclerc] who later took pole position. That's no big deal. 'The message he sends out only makes things worse. 'Most of the time, he's only that extreme with the press. By the time he comes into the briefing room, he's usually calmed down again. That's just his way.' The Formula One season is currently in the middle of a summer break - with Hamilton sitting a lowly sixth place in the race for the title and a whopping 175 points behind Oscar Piastri. The F1 season returns with the Dutch Grand Prix - with race day on August 31 as Piastri looks to extend his advantage at the top of the standings over McLaren team-mate Lando Norris.
