
Breathing Inequality: Air pollution's disproportionate impact on women
While much of the conversation around pollution centers on lungs or heart disease, emerging global evidence shows that air pollution is deeply entangled with hormonal imbalances, ovarian dysfunction, miscarriages, and disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Despite being one of the most adversely affected nations in terms of poor air quality, India largely ignores this link in research, policy, and public awareness.
Women in India are particularly vulnerable to this threat, not only due to their physiology but also because of their social roles and working conditions. Those from lower-income households continue to rely on unclean fuels like firewood and dung cakes for cooking, exposing them to high levels of indoor pollutants. Others, including migrant and informal workers, spend long hours outdoors in urban areas where fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations regularly exceed international safety thresholds recommended by the
World Health Organization
(WHO).

The transition between indoor and outdoor environments does not offer protection, it only extends the duration and variety of exposures. This double burden places women at an elevated risk of long-term reproductive harm, a reality that is rarely acknowledged in mainstream discourse. Scientific studies from across the world have revealed how pollutants such as PM2.5, black carbon, benzene, and dioxins can interfere with the endocrine system, disrupt estrogen and progesterone levels, and cause oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.
These disruptions contribute to hormonal disorders and reduce ovarian reserve, making conception difficult and increasing the risk of pregnancy complications. Among these, PCOS, a condition marked by irregular menstrual cycles, hormonal imbalance, and cysts in the ovaries, is now being increasingly studied for its link to air quality. Pollutants can trigger mechanisms that exacerbate or even initiate this disorder, yet India still lacks original epidemiological studies exploring this association within our own populations.
While global estimates suggest that PCOS affects anywhere between 4% and 21% of women, Indian studies indicate an even wider range, from 2% to as high as 35%, depending on region and diagnostic approach. A recent survey among college-going women in Delhi NCR found a prevalence of 17.4% in the 18–25 age group, double the pooled national average for that demographic. Despite Delhi's notorious air quality and chronic exposure to PM2.5 levels often five to ten times above the WHO recommended limits, there is still no published research examining the direct link between this exposure and PCOS or other reproductive disorders.
Most studies from India continue to focus on prevalence and sociocultural risk factors, while neglecting pollution as a possible driver for PCOS. This silence can be costly.
The WHO recommends that annual average PM2.5 exposure should not exceed 5 μg/m3, and daily levels should stay under 15 μg/m3. While according to recent Lancet Planetary Health study the entire population of India lived in areas where annual PM2.5 consistently exceeded the WHO guideline, and over 80% lived in areas above national guideline.
Much of this pollution comes from incomplete combustion processes, industrial activities, outdated vehicles, biomass use, and open waste burning.
For most of the year, residents breathe air that would be deemed hazardous in almost any other country. For women, this chronic exposure may be just as dangerous
as cigarette smoking, which is already linked to infertility, miscarriage, and reproductive organ damage.
A study published in The Lancet Planetary Health also showed an association between maternal exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and pregnancy loss (i.e., stillbirth and miscarriage) in South Asian countries.
More alarming is the growing body of international evidence showing black carbon particles lodged in placental tissue. These particles, often bound to co-pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dioxins, can travel from the lungs into the bloodstream and reach the uterus, compromising fetal development.
A study published in Nature Communications provided the first direct evidence that black carbon particles from air pollution can be detected on the fetal side of the human placenta, highlighting the impact of air pollutants on women and childbirth.
Pollutants from vehicular emissions, waste burning, and industrial activity are also known to mimic estrogen, hijacking hormonal signaling and triggering a host of reproductive and developmental problems.
The main challenge, however, is that although a few health datasets are available, there is still a lack of well-established, consistently maintained, and nationally accessible electronic health records (EHRs) that researchers can utilize, particularly for
studying pregnant women's health in India
. In contrast, India lacks a robust, integrated health data management system, underscoring the need for stronger government intervention.
Improved health data infrastructure is essential to support research on air pollution exposure and its health impacts, particularly to protect vulnerable populations from disproportionate exposure and associated health risks.
This is a critical gap, especially in a country where both air pollution and women's health inequalities are so widespread.
Protecting women's reproductive health in India requires urgent attention to the growing evidence linking air pollution to hormonal and reproductive disorders. Policy responses must go beyond urban planning and vehicle emissions to include a gender-sensitive public health strategy.
This will improve the diagnosis rate of PCOS and other women's reproductive health issues attributable to air pollution, thereby protecting women, especially during pregnancy. It will also aid informed decision-making to protect vulnerable women and guide actions related to air pollution. Reducing exposure to harmful particles is not only a climate and development imperative but also a national responsibility to safeguard women's well-being and secure the health of future generations.
We cannot continue to ignore the silent damage caused by toxic air on women's reproductive health.

Delhi's stray dogs: How other Indian cities and countries manage the issue

(Sanjeev Verma/HT Photo) The Supreme Court (SC) order on Monday to move all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR from streets to shelters has been widely criticised by many animal rights activists, who pointed out that the order is arbitrary and not thought out, citing stray dog management strategies adopted in Indian cities and foreign countries. HT looked at cities and countries in India and around the world to assess strategies used to manage community dogs. Around the world Community dogs in New York City (NYC) in the United States of America are mainly managed by Animal Care Centres (ACC), a not-for-profit organisation. The organisation houses dogs at shelters while trying to find them a home, and does not release them back on the not adopted within a certain time are put down. Singapore has followed the Trap-Neuter-Rehome/Release-Manage (TNRM) programme since 2018. This is mainly implemented by the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), a government body, which is the first responder for stray dog issues. Under this programme, stray dogs are captured, sterilised, vaccinated against infectious diseases, and microchipped so that they can be traced. Then they are either rehomed or released at suitable locations. In London, England, district authorities manage stray dogs and provide a dog warden service. All pet dogs over eight weeks old have to be microchipped, by law. The microchips can be matched to the owner's contact details and kept on national databases. London district authorities are legally mandated to pick up any stray dogs reported, try to find and contact their owners, and keep them for seven days if an owner cannot be found. If an owner is untraceable for seven days, suitable dogs are rehomed. Unsuitable dogs which cannot be rehomed are euthanised. In Turkey, municipalities are mandated to place dogs in shelters and euthanise dogs which are terminally ill or a threat to humans. In May, the Constitutional Court, Turkey's apex legal body, said that the provisions are legally valid and that their implementation will continue. 'Methods used in western countries are impossible here, as we do not have the requisite budget, or adequate proper manpower infrastructure. We should continue following the ABC rules, and monitoring committees at the local and state levels should be set up,' said Asher Jesudoss, a member of the executive committee of the Delhi Animal Welfare Board. Indian states India's stray dog management strategies are largely based on the central government's revised Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023. These rules mandate systematic sterilisation, vaccination and release of stray dogs by municipal authorities, while emphasising rabies prevention. Among notable actions is the stringent enforcement of the rules in Uttar Pradesh, which has prohibited uncontrolled feeding in public spaces under its Municipal Corporation Act. Similarly, Kerala has established special monitoring committees to oversee ABC implementation following a recent spate of stray dog attacks. Mumbai has adopted a balanced stance. While feeding of street dogs and cats is legal and protected by law, feeders are allowed to do so only at designated and clean spots, away from children's areas and public pathways. The feed must be hygienic and should not involve raw meat or leftover food. Feeders are also used to help with sterilisation and vaccination of animals. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, in a set of guidelines issued in June 2025, stated: 'Harassing of citizens for feeding street dogs and cats, hereinafter referred to as 'Community Animals', being a punishable offence. Community animals pertain to street animals more specifically in the neighbourhood. Our country endorses the virtues of ahimsa and non violence and these doctrines have always enabled people to peacefully coexist with animals. Moreover the duty to show compassion to all living creatures is a fundamental duty...' A significant provision under Rule 20 of the ABC Rules designates residents' welfare associations to handle community feeding complaints, although enforcement remains challenging due to a lack of penalty provisions.

Rural Telangana stands fifth in cigarette spend per capita

Rural smokers spend an average of ₹415 per person annually, far below the ₹625 spent by their city counterparts. Yet, the state still ranks high nationally—rural Telangana sits fifth in per capita cigarette expenditure, with urban areas close behind in sixth. Medical experts say these habits carry serious consequences for both users and those around them. Dr Srikrishna R Boddu, consultant physician at Kamineni Hospitals, stresses that secondhand smoke is far from harmless. "When individuals smoke, harmful particles are inhaled by people nearby, potentially causing allergies, respiratory ailments, and more severe complications," he warned. Continuous exposure, he explained, can inflame the throat and airways, leading to chronic conditions like bronchitis. When combined with heavy drinking, the risks escalate, increasing the likelihood of cancers and compounding strain on the heart. "The impacts on cardiovascular health cannot be overlooked—it's best to avoid these habits entirely to protect one's health," Dr Boddu advised. Rs35.7 lakh push to document, preserve Madiya language
1 2 Nagpur: The state govt has sanctioned Rs35.73 lakh for the Madiya Language Project at Riddhapur's Marathi Language University to safeguard one of the rarest Gond languages, spoken only in select pockets of Chandrapur and Gadchiroli. Madiya, a dialect steeped in oral traditions, songs and folklore, survives mainly among scattered Gond hamlets in Vidarbha's forest belt, especially in Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts. However, decades of migration and the growing dominance of mainstream languages have left it vulnerable, with fewer young speakers carrying it forward. A Government Resolution (GR) issued by the Marathi Language Department on Monday confirmed the sanction under the State Marathi Development Institute's grants. The amount will fund the project's further work — part of an ongoing initiative to document the dialect in a systematic manner. In one of the first such initiatives, led by researcher Manjiri Paranjpe who has worked extensively on Madiya, the university will be publishing her and her team's work. "The university will pitch wherever the gaps are needed to be fulfilled. This includes various documents, vocabulary lists, dictionaries, and books purely on the Madiya language," Dr Awalgaonkar said. The Madiya project is just the beginning. The VC said, "We also have other proposals in the pipeline. There are many such dialects, especially among the tribals, which are on the verge of extinction and that need to be conserved, documented for future generations." The GR notes that the Madiya Language Project was initiated to document the dialect and ensure its preservation in written form. The latest funding will support this effort, with the goal of creating a permanent linguistic record. Language scholars believe the project could serve as a model for preserving other endangered tribal tongues in Maharashtra.
