Air India plane crash probe: Captain RS Sandhu appointed domain expert

Veteran pilot and former Air India director of operations Captain RS Sandhu has been appointed as a domain expert by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in the ongoing probe into the Ahmedabad plane crash, sources told PTI on Sunday. Sandhu, who was also a designated examiner for the Boeing 787-8 fleet at Air India, had taken delivery of the now-crashed 787-8 plane—VT-ANB—in 2013. Air India flight AI171, which crashed minutes after take-off on June 12, killed 260 people — 241 on board and 19 on the ground. 'AAIB has onboarded seasoned aviator RS Sandhu in the ongoing investigation of the Air India Boeing 787-8 plane crash in Ahmedabad last month,' one of the sources told PTI. Sandhu, who was with Air India for nearly 39 years in various capacities, is the founder of aviation consultancy firm Aviazione. He had also headed a team that worked on the integration of the Tata group airlines. The investigation of the plane crash has come under controversy after The Wall Street Journal reported that their source had heard the audio recording recovered from the plane, in which the junior pilot can be heard asking the senior pilot about switching off the fuel supply. Notably, the preliminary findings of the investigation have suggested that the plane crashed due to an issue with the fuel supply switch. Following the reports, pilots have raised concerns over the issue, and later Air India clarified that the fuel switches of all their Boeing Dreamliner aircraft—the same model involved in the Ahmedabad plane crash—are functioning properly. The aircraft manufacturer Boeing has also come under the radar of the controversy, and a 2024 report has resurfaced after the crash, in which a deceased whistleblower—a former Boeing employee—warned that the manufacturing facility of the Dreamliner 787 was plagued by 'shoddy work practices and poor oversight.' Andhra liquor scam: Chargesheet reveals Jagan Mohan Reddy's role; YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy arrested

Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, left, and YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy NEW DELHI: Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has been named as a recipient of alleged kickbacks in a Rs 3,500 crore liquor scam, according to a chargesheet filed by the state police. The 305-page document, submitted to a local court on Saturday, claims Jagan received a share of Rs 50–60 crore every month during the 2019–2024 YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) regime. However, the chargesheet stops short of naming him as an accused. The court is yet to take cognizance of the chargesheet. "The collected amounts were eventually handed over to Kesireddy Rajasekhar Reddy(A-1). Rajasekhar Reddy would then pass the money to Vijay Sai Reddy (A-5), Mithun Reddy (A-4), Balaji (A-33) who would transfer it to former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. On an average, Rs 50-60 crore was collected every month (during the 2019-24 YSRCP regime)," the charge sheet said, as quoted by PTI. A key witness has reportedly corroborated these transactions. The report labels Rajasekhar Reddy as the "mastermind and co-conspirator" behind the liquor scam, alleging he manipulated the excise policy, replaced automated Order for Supply (OFS) systems with manual processes, and appointed loyalists in APSBCL (Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation Limited). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Genius Portable Cooler Keeps Your Home Cool & Saves You Money AiraBreeze Learn More Undo The chargesheet states that Rs 250–300 crore was routed in cash for election expenses of the YSRCP, coordinated by Rajasekhar Reddy and ex-MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy. The laundered money was allegedly invested in land, gold, and luxury assets in Dubai and Africa, via over 30 shell companies. "The accused planned the change in excise policy and also its modalities, to ensure that they would receive large kickbacks, majority portion of such kickbacks was received in cash, gold bullion etc," said the document. A key meeting with distillery owners was allegedly held at Hyderabad's Park Hyatt Hotel in late 2019. Organised by Sajjala Sridhar Reddy (A-6), the owners were reportedly threatened to cooperate with the manual OFS process and pay kickbacks of 12–20% or face order denials. "During the meeting, the owners were intimidated that if they do not accede to their proposals and no orders will be issued to them. Such intimidation for kickbacks by threatening them with no issuances of OFS and thereby receiving kickbacks amounts to extortion," the chargesheet quoted by PTI added. On Saturday, YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy was arrested by the special investigation team (SIT) after hours of questioning in connection with the scam. Earlier in May, the enforcement directorate (ED) registered a money laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) to probe the alleged financial crimes. Reacting to Midhun Reddy's arrest, several YSRCP leaders including Botcha Satyanarayana, Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani), Ambati Rambabu, Merugu Nagarjuna, and G Srikanth Reddy issued a joint statement calling it a clear case of 'political vendetta" by the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government.

Sona Comstar forms JV with JNT to enter Chinese EV market

Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) Auto components Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar) on Sunday said it has formed a joint venture with Jinnaite Machinery to enter the Chinese electric vehicle market with an investment of USD 12 million (about Rs 100 crore). The company has signed a binding term sheet with Jinnaite Machinery Co Ltd (JNT) to establish a joint venture (JV) firm in China, Sona Comstar said in a statement. Sona Comstar will invest USD 12 million and have a 60 per cent stake, while JNT will contribute USD 8 million in assets and business to the joint venture in the first phase, it added. The JV will start operations in H2 FY26 to fulfil existing orders from EV and non-EV customers, marking a significant milestone in Sona Comstar's expansion into the Chinese EV market. It will manufacture and supply driveline systems and components to automotive OEMs in China and globally, the company said. Sona Comstar is the largest supplier of differential assemblies for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in North America and ranks among the top suppliers in Europe. 'The driveline manufacturing operations in China align with the company's strategy to expand its presence in Asian markets, particularly in India, China, Japan, and South Korea, while also working to increase its market share further in North America and Europe," the statement said. China is the world's largest automotive market, especially for electric vehicles. In 2024, annual EV sales in China reached 11 million, accounting for two-thirds of global EV sales, it added. Stating that Chinese OEMs dominate the market, accounting for 76 per cent of global EV sales last year, Sona Comstar said it is natural for any company with aspirations to be a global EV supplier to be part of the Chinese market and supply chain. 'This joint venture marks a significant step in our strategy to expand into the rapidly growing Asian markets. As the largest electric vehicle market in the world and a leader in EV technologies, China offers tremendous opportunities for innovation and growth," Sona Comstar MD and Group CEO Vivek Vikram Singh said. By leveraging the strengths of both partners, this venture is well-positioned for strong growth, and it has the potential to become a key supplier of driveline solutions for electric vehicles in the region, he added. 'With a robust order book already in place, we expect operations to commence later this year," Singh said. JNT operates a world-class foundry utilising patented technology to manufacture complex castings and moulds, it added. It is actively engaged in the formulation of Chinese national standards, having contributed to the development of five national standards. 'The joint venture leverages Sona Comstar's expertise in driveline system design, precision forging, and precision machining, combined with JNT's proficiency in casting and moulding," the company said. This collaboration, along with JNT's established customer relationships in China, supplier connections, and understanding of local regulations, positions JV for strong growth over the medium term, it added.
