North Korea bars foreign tourists from new seaside resort
SEOUL : North Korea has barred foreigners from a newly opened beach resort, the country's tourism administration said this week, just days after Russia's top diplomat visited the area.
The sprawling seaside resort on its east coast, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's pet project, opened to domestic visitors earlier this month with great fanfare in state-run media.
Dubbed 'North Korea's Waikiki' by South Korean media, the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone appears to be lined with high-rise hotels and waterparks, and can purportedly accommodate some 20,000 people.
State media previously said visits to Wonsan by Russian tour groups were expected in the coming months.
But following Lavrov's visit, the North's national tourism administration said 'foreign tourists are temporarily not being accepted' without giving further details, in a statement posted on an official website this week.
Kim showed a keen interest in developing North Korea's tourism industry during his early years in power, analysts have said, and the coastal resort area was a particular focus.
He said ahead of the opening of the beach resort that the construction of the site would go down as 'one of the greatest successes this year' and that the North would build more large-scale tourist zones 'in the shortest time possible'.
The North last year permitted Russian tourists to return for the first time since the pandemic and western tour operators briefly returned in February this year.
Seoul's unification ministry, however, said that it expected international tourism to the new resort was 'likely to remain small in scale' given the limited capacity of available flights.
Kim held talks with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in Wonsan last week where he offered Moscow his full and 'unconditional' support for its war in Ukraine, KCNA reported.
Lavrov reportedly hailed the seaside project as a 'good tourist attraction', adding it would become popular among both local and Russian visitors looking for new destinations.
Ahead of Lavrov's recent visit, Russia announced that it would begin twice-a-week flights between Moscow and Pyongyang.

'This international gathering will bring together over 100 distinguished participants including cultural experts, academics, creative economy leaders, representatives from ASEAN Member States, SOMCA (Senior Officials' Meeting on Culture and Arts) and stakeholders to explore transformative approaches in heritage conservation and value creation,' the ministry said in a statement tonight, adding that panel discussions, breakout dialogues and plenary sessions would be held throughout the workshop. Discussions on maximising the socio-economic potential of ASEAN's cultural heritage by elevating its value chain for economic growth, strengthening regional cooperation through whole-of-ASEAN frameworks and cross-pillar collaboration will also be held during the workshop. The event is expected to promote public awareness and community engagement in heritage preservation, and integrate culture and heritage into sustainable development policies to ensure inclusive growth and social cohesion. 'The Melaka Declaration, as the main outcome of the workshop, will contribute to the development of a significant ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) outcome document, targeted to be adopted at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October 2025 in Kuala Lumpur. HANOI, July 20 — Vietnam's plan to bar gas-guzzling motorbikes from central Hanoi may clear the air of the smog-smothered capital, but riders fear paying a high toll for the capital's green transition. 'Of course everyone wants a better environment,' said housewife Dang Thuy Hanh, baulking at the 80 million dong (RM12,986) her family would spend replacing their four scooters with electric alternatives. 'But why give us the first burden without any proper preparation?' grumbled the 52-year-old. Hanoi's scooter traffic is a fixture of the city's urban buzz. The northern hub of nine million people has nearly seven million two-wheelers, hurtling around at rush hour in a morass of congestion. Their exhausts splutter emissions regularly spurring the city to the top of worldwide smog rankings in a country where pollution claims at least 70,000 lives a year, according to the World Health Organization. The government last weekend announced plans to block fossil-fuelled bikes from Hanoi's 31 square kilometre (12 square mile) centre by next July. It will expand in stages to forbid all gas-fuelled vehicles in urban areas of the city in the next five years. Hanh — one of the 600,000 people living in the central embargo zone — said the looming cost of e-bikes has left her fretting over the loss of 'a huge amount of savings'. Sabah receives the Most Outstanding State award

KOTA KINABALU (July 20): Sabah was conferred the Most Outstanding State in Malaysia for the Year 2024 award during the International Business Review (IBR) Asean Awards here on Saturday. The award is a recognition of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's exemplary leadership, as the state has made marked improvements across the board through his comprehensive Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap. Positive and impactful changes have been made economically, in championing the state's and her people's rights, in infrastructural improvements, and so forth, under his administration. Sabah Ports, as a wholly owned subsidiary of Suria Capital Holdings Berhad, manages Sabah's port operations. Through their eight ports, they provide berthing, handling and cargo facilities for port customers. In September 2024, they signed a partnership with DP World to manage Sepanggar Bay Container Port, with a goal of making it a key regional port for BIMP-EAGA. The other winners are National Heart Institute for the Corporate Excellence in the Healthcare Sector for Leadership in ESG Innovations category; Clean Kinetics Pte Ltd (Corporate Excellence in the Renewable Energy Sector for Sustainable Energy).
