Bescom ATP machines to be discontinued from Aug 1
The kiosks, which used to be widely used for payment of bills, were shut down in 2015 after other modes of payment kicked in. However, following public demand, ATP machines were reopened in 2017 with the number of kiosks being increased from 117 to 217.
Now, there are several ways to pay electricity bills, along with the Bescom website and the Bescom Mithra app. The bill payments can also be made using Spot Billing Devices, Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), NEFT, and ECS (Electronic Clearing Service) and UPI platforms.
'Customers can continue to pay their electricity bills through cash payment counters at Bescom sub-divisional offices, Bangalore One, Karnataka One centres within Bescom's jurisdiction, and online payment methods such as the Bescom website and the Bescom Mithra app,' said Bescom officials.
Further, an official of Bescom said that the contract period of ATP machines had come to an end and with the mode of payment not being widely used, it did not make fiscal sense to continue them.

Karnataka revises setback rules for buildings in Bengaluru; introduces new stilt parking rule
The Karnataka government has notified amendments to the Zonal Regulations of the Revised Master Plan (RMP), 2015 for Bengaluru's Local Planning Area (LPA), rationalising all-round building setback requirements. In addition, the notification revises permissible stilt height, earlier referred to as 'less than 2.4m,' to 'up to 3m.' Similarly, the maximum permissible height for certain building components where the stilt height was set at 11.5m has been revised to 12m. The revised regulations, issued on August 1, by the Urban Development Department, are now in effect. The amendment introduces a calibrated setback system for buildings above 12m in height. The minimum required front, rear, and side setbacks will now be determined based on both building height and plot size. For buildings between 12m and 15m high, constructed on plots up to 4,000 sq. m with stilt parking, the required setbacks can now be 1m to 1.5m. For buildings in plot sizes above 4,000 sq. m, the setbacks are benchmarked at 5m. For buildings above 12m up to 15m where stilt parking is not constructed, the setback is set at 5m. As the height of a building increases, so do the minimum setback requirements, scaling up to 16m for buildings taller than 50m. The setback requirements for different slabs, categorised based on building heights. Alongside the setback revisions, the amendment ensures the use of stilt floors exclusively for vehicle parking. The stilt floor, now clearly defined as being up to 3m in height, will not be counted towards the total height of the building. In addition, strict enforcement clauses have been introduced to prevent misuse. The use of stilt floors for commercial, storage, or habitable purposes is expressly prohibited. Such violations will result in denial of power and water connections by BESCOM and BWSSB. In the case of non-residential buildings or office spaces, misuse could also lead to the cancellation or withholding of trade licences. The amendment not only optimises land use but also helps maintain essential standards of fire safety and curb issues such as rampant roadside parking in residential areas. The notification, published under Section 13-E of the Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act, 1961, follows the release of a draft on June 12, which invited public objections.

It is intended to replace the Auxiliary Warning System (AWS) currently used on the Western Railway's suburban Railway operates over 1,400 local train services each day on the Churchgate-Virar-Dahanu corridor, with a daily ridership of over 3 million. The current AWS alerts train drivers with audio and visual signals about upcoming signals and assists with speed monitoring and emergency braking. However, officials said the system has limitations in preventing incidents such as Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) or signal jumping due to its reliance on human intervention."The AWS panel in the motorman's cab has an alarm, a vigilance button, and red, yellow, or blue lights. If the alarm sounds, the motorman must press the button within four seconds, or the brakes will activate and remain locked until the train comes to a complete halt," an official to railway officials, the AWS's dependence on manual response and limited automation reduces its ability to prevent certain critical safety which means 'armour' in Hindi, includes features such as continuous speed monitoring, in-cab signalling, and automatic braking when trains approach a red signal or exceed speed system ensures real-time communication between trains and signalling infrastructure, allowing automated intervention when safety thresholds are breached."Work has begun on the transition to Kavach. Karnataka's Minister for Energy KJ George New Delhi: In a major development, Karnataka's Minister for Energy KJ George refuted any connection between recent Income Tax department raids at a prominent tech park in Bengaluru and the state's smart meter initiative or the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) and said that they were 'a routine regulatory exercise' related to IT filings and had nothing to do with any government project. In a firm statement issued via his official social media handle, the minister termed the allegations circulating in a section of the media as 'completely baseless, misleading, and politically motivated.' 'There is no connection whatsoever between the smart meter project or BESCOM and the Income Tax department's raids,' George said. 'I strongly condemn this attempt to mislead the public and draw false links to the Energy Department.' This comes after the Income Tax Department conducted surveys from July 28 to 30 at multiple locations connected to George and real estate tycoon Jitu Virwani of the Embassy Group, including Golflinks Software Park Private Limited in Bengaluru. KJ George Issues Statement: In view of the misinformation being circulated regarding myself and the companies under my chairmanship, purportedly in connection with the #SmartMeterInitiative and the #EnergyDepartment of the Government of Karnataka, we wish to issue the following clarification: The recent interaction with the #IncomeTax Department was a routine regulatory exercise solely pertaining to the verification of our companies' income tax filings. Echoing this stance, Golflinks Software Park clarified in an official statement that the survey conducted under Section 133A of the Income Tax Act was routine in nature and 'has no connection to public officials, state government departments, BESCOM contracts, or smart meter-related matters.'
