Tesco and Waitrose launch new 'trial' that makes major change to trolleys
Two of the UK's biggest supermarket's have introduced a major change to their trolley systems. The trial aims at making the shopping experience "easier" for customers.
Reports have suggested that Tesco and Waitrose are now trialling new American-style plastic shopping trolleys at select stores across the UK.
These trolleys boast a lighter design and easier manoeuvrability, and they come without the rattling noises synonymous with the old metal versions.
A Tesco pilot scheme at its Sheffield Infirmary Superstore is experimenting with hybrid trolleys that feature a metallic frame topped with a plastic basket. Over at the Waitrose spot in Brent Cross, all-plastic models are on trial, reports Birmingham Live.
Hannah Lewis, managing director of trolley provider Formbar, is convinced both consumers and stores will take to them as they are "easier to push around", while also being "more cost-effective."
"Trolleys are important, they are the first thing you see as you go into a supermarket. The plastic ones are more cost-effective to maintain, as well as being fully recyclable.
"We'll be seeing them much more in the future which I think people will like as they are easier to push around than the steel ones, and they are quieter too with no metal rattling sounds."
Reddit users have been deep in discussion about the Tesco trolley tests, with one user pointing out: "At least these won't rust when they end up in the local river, canal, duck pond, etc."
Another person joked: "Nope they'll float merrily on by instead."

Reports from shoppers also suggest that the new trolley model might be smaller, causing another user to speculate: "Are they trying to make it less obvious how much less we can get for a £100. 'I filled a whole trolley.'"
It comes just as Tesco enticed its customers by announcing it would be giving away Clubcard points for free as part of a huge summer day out deal.
The UK's largest supermarket chain is giving loyalty members the chance to snag 1,000 points for free when they exchange at least £5 of Clubcard vouchers with one of Tesco's Days Out Reward Partners.
The offer means that Clubcard members can accrue an extra £10 worth of points at no additional cost, simply by using their vouchers.
Shama Wilson, Tesco's Group Membership and Loyalty Director, commented: "We know our customers are always looking for things to do across the summer, especially during school holidays, and so this is always a popular time for Clubcard members to exchange their vouchers for double their value with Reward Partners.
"To make that even more rewarding, and to celebrate 30 years of Clubcard rewards, we are offering an amazing £10 of points back when you spend on days out.
"It means you can exchange your vouchers and get great savings while getting £10 of points in return to go towards your weekly shop or even another great day out later in the year."

Man Utd open transfer talks over 'unrealistic' move for Premier League star
Manchester United have made contact with Brighton as they look to land explore a deal for midfielder Carlos Baleba. The Cameroon star enjoyed a stellar year last season and the Seagulls have no plans to cash in. The Red Devils are aware the move may be unrealistic, especially if their transfer funds to end up being spent on Benjamin Sesko, but are looking to gauge whether anything can be done in the coming weeks as Ruben Amorim seeks to further bolster his squad, reports the Athletic. The 21-year-old has three years left on his contract at the Amex but is proving to be one of the Premier League's best in his position as Brighton continue to find hidden gems in the market. This time though they have no plans to cash in. Previously they've bought in the likes of Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister before seeing them flourish and move on for a huge profit. This is not one of those scenarios though and those on the south coast want to retain Baleba. United's current focus is on landing Sesko from RB Leipzig after they jumped ahead of Newcastle in the transfer race. There is an acceptance though that any move, which could cost more than £70million, will make any move for the Brighton star very difficult. They would be reliant on a number of players leaving the club for sizeable fees. Amorim does have the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony looking for the exit door, but the trio remain at Old Trafford as things stand. A striker is currently the priority in Manchester, given they have already bought in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. But if they can secure a No 9 then a midfielder capable of playing in the number six role is next on their hit list and Baleba has excelled in that position. Already this summer Brighton have allowed Joao Pedro to leave for Chelsea, banking them a hefty sum. The highly-rated Simon Adingra has also joined Sunderland for more than £20m, which means they have little need to sell, putting them in a strong position to retain Baleba. The Brighton star previously said on all the speculation surrounding him: "If they can help me, I'll accept that help to push forward and develop. So, I just work to help my team and for myself, to progress for the future. In return, everyone who helps me wants me to go to the highest level. And if there are big clubs who want me, it's not something that worries me or gets me excited. I just need to work hard and keep a cool head." Ex-Palace co-owner Textor ‘definitely interested' in buying Wednesday
American businessman Textor sold his 43 per cent stake in Crystal Palace in July and is a majority shareholder at Lyon, Belgium club RWDM Brussels and Brazilian side Botafogo. The Sheffield Star has reported that Textor told journalist Alan Myers he wanted to buy 'a traditional English club' but has not yet made any approach to embattled Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri. Textor said: 'It's true that I am looking for a traditional English club to buy, or with which I can partner… I just have not spoken with anybody at Sheffield Wednesday yet and I am monitoring the situation, hoping to better understand it. 'I'm definitely interested, It's a lot to solve in a short amount of time with regards to taking advantage of the transfer window but it's definitely a club and community I would like to help.' Thai businessman Chansiri has come under increasing pressure to sell the club, which he bought for a reported £37.5million from Milan Mandaric in 2015. He recently confirmed he had rejected one consortium's £40m bid, while talks with various other interested parties have stalled. Wednesday have lurched from one crisis to another in recent seasons and are currently under three English Football League embargoes for various financial breaches. #SWFC #EnoughlsEnough #WAWAW — Sheffield Wednesday Supporters' Trust (@SWFCTrust) August 3, 2025 Wages were not paid on time for the third-successive month in July and players refused to play in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley last Saturday. That heightened concern within the EFL that the club would not be able to fulfil Sunday's opening Sky Bet Championship fixture at Leicester. Under EFL rules, the delayed payments allowed key players Josh Windass and Michael Smith to walk away from their contracts for free to join Wrexham and Preston respectively. Amid the summer chaos, former manager Danny Rohl initially failed to return for pre-season training before eventually departing by mutual agreement and being replaced by his assistant Henrik Pedersen. Captain Barry Bannan, who signed a new deal with the Owls at the weekend, has since said he did not think the players would boycott Sunday's game, but it has been reported the players had considered it. The Owls have sold out their allocation for the trip to the King Power Stadium, where Sheffield Wednesday Supporters' Trust have planned a large-scale protest. The Trust has called on fans to delay entry to their seats until five minutes after kick-off, while a large banner will be displayed in 'a visibly empty away end'. Textor sold his stake in Palace as they bid to overturn UEFA's decision to demote them from the Europa League to the Conference League under its multi-club ownership rules. He added: 'I often cite (Wednesday) as an example of what's wrong with football today, the lack of parity, because of the influence of money and I wish there was a system where the Sheffield Wednesdays of the world could be champions again.'
