Atlanta Falcons mock draft update: Training camp edition

Yahoo3 days ago
Last season, the Atlanta Falcons targeted the quarterback of their future, Michael Penix Jr., in the first round of the draft. They also used their 2026 first round to go up and get edge defender James Pearce Jr. This leaves the Falcons with no first-round pick in 2026.
For the Falcons, it is all about building around Penix and franchise running back Bijan Robinson. This is what we kept in mind when we put together our updated three-round mock draft with just a week until the start of training camp. Let's break down the Falcons' two picks.
Second round - WR Zachariah Branch - Georgia
Branch is lightning quick in and out of his breaks and shows real track speed. The former USC receiver has landed in Georgia and has a chance to be one of the most productive receivers in college football.
Third round - S Xavier Nwankpa - Iowa
With Sebastian Castro off to the NFL, Nwankpa takes over as the top defensive back on the Iowa defense. He's got elite NFL size and athleticism and continues to develop as a coverage player.

Pec has 2 goals, Yoshida scores in stoppage time for Galaxy in 3-3 tie with LAFC

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gabriel Pec scored two goals and Maya Yoshida added a goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time for the LA Galaxy in a 3-3 tie with Los Angeles FC on Saturday night. Eddie Segura was shown a straight red card (violent conduct) in the first minute of stoppage time and LAFC played a man down the rest of the way. LAFC (10-5-7) has its string of three consecutive wins — all shutouts by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris — snapped. Yoshida flicked in a header, off an arcing ball-in played by defender Mauricio Cuevas, from the center of the area to cap the scoring. Denis Bouanga scored twice for LAFC. Bouanga has scored at least one goal in four consecutive games and has seven goal contributions (five goals, two assists) during that span. Pec converted from the penalty spot in the 36th minute and added a goal in the 79th — finishing off a string of quick crisp passes with a first-touch shot from the right-center of the area — for the Galaxy (3-14-7). The 24-year-old Pec, who had 30 goal contributions (16 goals, 14 assists) as an MLS rookie last season, has five goals and three assists this season. The Galaxy is 8-7-7 against LAFC all time in the regular season. Bouanga opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, his sixth consecutive game against the Galaxy with a goal. Bouanga perfectly timed his run onto a well-placed ball-ahead played by Ryan Hollingshead a blasted a first-touch shot into the net. Javairo Dilrosun stopped a low cross played from the left side by Nate Ordaz and then flicked in the finish from the right corner of the 6-yard box to give LAFC a 2-0 lead in the 31st. On a breakaway, Bouanga outraced the defense and then beat goalkeeper Novak Micovic, who crept off his line, with a rolling shot from near the penalty spot to make it 3-1 in the 67th. The Galaxy, the defending MLS Cup champions, lost 2-1 at home against Austin on Wednesday to snap their season-long three-game unbeaten streak. ___ AP soccer:

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Omir Fernández subbed into the match in the 86th minute and scored in stoppage time as the Portland Timbers rallied for a 1-1 draw with Minnesota United on Saturday night. Mosquera collected his fourth assist when Fernández found the net in his 13th match with Portland after making eight appearances with the Colorado Rapids to begin the season. Defender Anthony Markanich subbed in for forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane in the 61st minute and scored in the 77th to give Minnesota United the lead. It was his sixth goal this season after scoring once in his first 44 appearances. Julian Gressel notched his second assist. Maxime Crépeau saved five shots in goal for the Timbers (9-7-7). Dayne St. Clair totaled three saves for Minnesota United (11-5-8). Minnesota United is 5-2-6 on the road this season and leads the all-time series with the Timbers 9-4-3. 2025 Arizona Cardinals training camp roster preview: OL Christian Jones

The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team. Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook. Next up is offensive lineman Christian Jones. Christian Jones background, 2024 season Jones enters his second NFL season and with the Cardinals. He was drafted in the fifth round last year out of Texas, where he played six seasons, starting every single game of his final four. He began his rookie season on injured reserve for the first seven weeks. After he was activated, he was inactive as a healthy scratch for the next eight games. He ended up starting the season finale in Week 18 after Paris Johnson, Jonah Williams and Jackson Barton all ended up on injured reserve and Kelvin Beachum started at left tackle. He played 74 total offensive snaps in two games. Christian Jones 2025 contract details, cap hit Jones signed a four-year rookie deal worth $4.33 million. In 2025, he will make $960,000 as his salary if he makes the active roster and will count $1.04 million against the cap. Questions he faces, roster outlook Jones didn't get much of an opportunity to show much but wasn't terrible in his one start. The Cardinals' three top tackles of Johnson, Williams and Beachum return and are roster locks, so Jones' spot on the roster isn't certain. He is on the roster bubble entering camp but perhaps is one of the favorites of the bubble players. He will battle for one of the one or two final offensive line spots, whether they keep nine or 10 on the roster. He won't make the regular eight-man rotation that will be active on game days, as they need a swing tackle, which is Beachum, a backup center and a swing guard. So Jones' play will be notable to watch, especially with the versatile Nick Leverett on the roster and the addition of undrafted rookie Josh Fryar.
