Man injured as IED planted by Naxalites explodes in Chhattisgarh

News1805-08-2025
Bijapur, Aug 5 (PTI) A 24-year-old man sustained injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Naxalites went off in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Tuesday, police said.
This is the second such incident in the district in the last 48 hours.
The blast occurred around 8 am when the victim, Pramod Kakem, had gone to a rivulet for a bath near Gunjeparti village under the Usoor police station limits, an official said.
He inadvertently came in contact with the IED, which exploded, causing injuries to his palms, he said.
The official said Kakem, a resident of the Ilmidi police station area, had gone to his relative's place in Gunjeparti.
The injured villager was provided preliminary treatment and shifted to a community health centre in Usoor, he added.
In a similar blast on Monday, a 50-year-old man was injured in a forest near Pujarikanker village under the Usoor police station limits while he was grazing cattle, police said.
The Maoists often plant IEDs on dirt tracks to target security personnel who use such routes during anti-Naxalite operations inside forests. Civilians have fallen prey to such traps laid by ultras in the past in the Bastar region, police said.
Police have appealed to the public to exercise extra caution when visiting forest areas and to immediately report any suspicious objects or activities to the nearest police station or security camp.
On July 13, three persons, including a minor girl, were injured in a similar incident in the Madded area of Bijapur.
Around 27 people have lost their lives in Maoist violence in the Bastar region, comprising seven districts, including Bijapur, so far this year. PTI COR TKP ARU

2 tankers of chemical waste seized in Thane; 6 booked for polluting water and air

Thane: Police have seized two chemical-laden tankers and registered a case against the director of a company and five others for allegedly disposing of hazardous chemical waste into a drain in Thane district, officials said on Tuesday. During patrolling on Sunday morning, a police team spotted two tankers parked near a drain close to another chemical company at Narpoli in Bhiwandi area of Thane, anti-extortion cell's senior police inspector Sailesh Salvi said. The police seized the two tankers filled with calcium hypochlorite solution (used as a bleach), weighing 17,720 kg, belonging to a chemical company located at Wada in neighbouring Palghar district, along with equipment used for releasing the waste into the water, he said. The probe indicated the tanker drivers and a worker had already released around 2,000 kg of the chemical waste into the drain, causing water pollution and posing health hazards to the local population, he said. "Such illegal disposal of industrial waste not only violates environmental laws but also endangers public health," he said. A case has been registered against the Palghar-based chemical company's director, two drivers, a worker and another person under sections 279 (fouling water of public spring or reservoir), 280 (making atmosphere noxious to health) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, he added. Man who fired shotgun outside New York synagogue gets 10 years in prison

Albany, Aug 12 (AP) A man who fired a shotgun outside an upstate New York synagogue with dozens of children inside shortly after the start of the Israel-Hamas war was sentenced in federal court Tuesday to 10 years in prison. Mufid Alkhader, 29, was arrested in December 2023 after firing two shots in the air and shouting 'Free Palestine!" outside Temple Israel of Albany. No one was injured, but the incident terrified many of the 61 children attending preschool and the adult staffers who had to shelter in place. 'My daughter was in Hebrew class with her teacher, whose own child was on the other side of the building," Rachel Mandel told the court. 'Her amazing teacher held, hid and comforted my child. She prepared herself and the children in her care to die as victims of hate." The shots were fired hours before the first night of Hanukkah and two months after the surprise incursion by Hamas triggered the war. Federal prosecutors say Alkhader, whose gun jammed after the second shot, complained about events in the Middle East after his arrest. Under a deal with prosecutors, Alkhader in February pleaded guilty to obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs by threat of force, brandishing a firearm during the commission of that offence and conspiring to purchase a firearm unlawfully. Alkhader, wearing an orange jail shirt, told the court Tuesday he felt terrible about what he did and for scaring people. 'I know I was not in my right mind," Alkhader said, asking for forgiveness. Alkhader's public defender had argued for a more lenient sentence, citing his client's severe mental illness. But Judge Anne Nardacci sided with prosecutors, who said Alkhader should face 10 years in prison after traumatising the children and adults in the synagogue. Prosecutor Richard Belliss said Alkhader wanted to scare the people in the building, 'and scare them he did." Alkhader was born in a Palestinian refugee community near Baghdad and his family came to the US as refugees in 2012, when he was 16. He became a naturalised US citizen two years later and lived in nearby Schenectady at the time of the shooting. Another man was sentenced last fall to 14 months in prison for making a 'straw" purchase of the shotgun for Alkhader.
