Matt Carpenter, a three-time All-Star infielder in St. Louis, retires after 14 seasons
Associated Press
Matt Carpenter is calling it a career.
The veteran infielder said on the 'Get In The Game' podcast on Wednesday that he is stepping away following a 14-year career, most of them with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The 39-year-old Carpenter was a three-time All-Star while moving between second, third and first base. Carpenter hit .259 with 179 home runs and 659 RBIs in 1,511 games, the vast majority of them in St. Louis, which selected him in the 13th round of the 2009 amateur draft following a standout college career at TCU.
Carpenter reached the majors in 2011 and was a fixture in the Cardinals' lineup for the next decade. The left-handed hitter led the majors in hits (199), runs (126) and doubles (55) in 2013 while making his first All-Star appearance and helping St. Louis to the World Series.
Carpenter remained in St. Louis through 2021 before spending a season with the New York Yankees in 2022, then moving on to San Diego the following season.
The Cardinals brought Carpenter back in 2024. He hit .234 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 59 games.
'So fortunate that that opportunity came about, (having) the last jersey you put on being the first jersey you put on,' he said.
Carpenter said he was pretty certain going into 2024 that it would be his final season. He kept his options open last winter. Nothing developed and he realized how much time he had missed at home with his wife, Mackenzie, and their two children, both in elementary school.
'God really put it on my heart that it was time to come home,' Carpenter told podcast host Scott Linebrink, a former major league pitcher.
Carpenter called St. Louis a 'special, special place to play baseball.' He ranks in the top 10 in franchise history in multiple offensive categories, including walks, hit by pitch and sacrifice flies, symbolic of Carpenter's gritty, team-first approach to his job.

De Bruyne signs with Serie A champion Napoli after 10 seasons at Man City
Associated Press NAPLES, Italy (AP) — Two-time Premier League player of the season Kevin De Bruyne signed as a free agent with Serie A champion Napoli on Thursday. 'KING KEV IS HERE,' Napoli declared in a series of posts on X. The 33-year-old De Bruyne's contract at Manchester City expired. Napoli did not announce the length of his new contract. Around 150 fans welcomed De Bruyne on his arrival at a clinic in Rome for his medical. They chanted his name before also singing about Napoli being champion after the player had gone into the facility. At Napoli, De Bruyne will reunite with Belgium teammate Romelu Lukaku. And follow in the footsteps of former Napoli great Dries Mertens, an ex-Belgium international. In Napoli's midfield, De Bruyne can team with Serie A player of the year Scott McTominay, who made a highly successful move from Manchester United. Known as one of soccer's most complete midfielders, De Bruyne was named the best player in the Premier League for the 2019-2020 and 2021-22 seasons. In 10 seasons at City, he helped the English club to six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League trophy. The addition of De Bruyne may have been one of the reasons that convinced Napoli coach Antonio Conte to stay on for another season after considering rejoining Juventus. ___ AP soccer:

New Texans RB Nick Chubb ready for rejuvenation to career in Houston
New Texans RB Nick Chubb ready for rejuvenation to career in Houston When signed to a one-year deal, the Houston Texans knew the risk of bringing in a player like running back Nick Chubb ahead of a pivotal season. They also know the reward of what a healthy version can bring to their backfield. That certainly outweighed the downside when deciding on whether $2.5 million needed to be given to a player who could get Houston over the hump. When healthy, Chubb can be a 1,000-yard, downhill runner with no end in sight. At 50%, he's a useful third-down option. While the Texans can't expect Chubb to regain his Cleveland Browns' potential, they expect him to be a solid secondary option behind Pro Bowler Joe Mixon. Yes, barring an injury, Mixon will remain the starter, but the potential tandem of two former AFC North standouts working together has many in the Texans' organization ready to see it in action. 'We all know the caliber of player that Nick can be when he's healthy and when he's at the top of his game,' coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday. 'He's a dynamic player. He's a game changer. So, we're just easing him in. We'll see how far he gets.' Injuries have derailed the once Hall of Fame-caliber career to close out his time with the Browns. In Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023, Chubb suffered a season-ending knee injury that cost him the first six games of 2024. When returning, he was still dealing with the lingering after-effects, leading to him finishing with 332 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged just 3.3 yards per carry last fall, leading to Cleveland gaining the No. 2 overall pick. 'We understand its history,' Ryans said of Chubb. 'But, we don't dwell on that. We're giving him an opportunity. We'll see how it turns out for us here in Houston.' In his first meeting with the Texans, Chubb admitted that he wasn't near full strength last season and could feel the limitations in game. That's now a thing of the past as he begins the next chapter of his career in Houston. 'Injuries happen,' Chubb said Wednesday. 'With the injury I had, it takes about two years to get back. So I'm over the hump. I was able to get a full year in, of doing the things I do best. Now I'm feeling good as I have been in a long time." Even if the Texans get a fraction of the All-Pro runner, they'll be in good shape next fall. After Mixon missed several games due to injury, Houston's offense became a pedestrian one-dimensional unit that couldn't find a spark on the ground. That won't happen in 2025 now with Chubb on the roster, who's excited to reignite his career under new offensive coordinator Nick Caley. "He knows what he's doing. He knows his stuff," Chubb said of Caley. "We talked about the run schemes, things like that, what his plans are. I mean, I'm impressed. I'm happy. And I'm excited.' The Texans return for the start of training camp late next month.

Wimbledon announces record $73M prize fund and $4M for singles champions
Associated Press LONDON (AP) — Wimbledon's prize money has risen to a record 53.5 million pounds (about $73 million) and the singles champions will each earn three million pounds ($4 million), All England Club officials announced on Thursday. The total amount is 3.5 million pounds ($6.8 million) more than last year, an increase of 7% — and exactly twice the pot handed out to competitors at the grass-court Grand Slam 10 years ago. 'We're immensely proud of the fact that if you look back 10 years, you can see the increase over that period and 7% this year,' All England chair Deborah Jevans said. 'And we have listened to the players, we have engaged with the players.' The 2025 winners' checks represent an 11.1% jump on last year's prizes for the men's and women's singles champions and comes amid growing player demands for a bigger share of grand slam profits. Players who lose in the first round of singles will get 66,000 pounds, up 10% year on year. 'The focus on just the prize money at four events, the Grand Slams, does not get to the heart of what the challenge is for tennis,' Jevans added. 'The challenge with tennis is the fact that the players don't have an offseason which they want, they have increasing injuries that they're speaking about, and we've always said that we as Wimbledon are willing to engage and talk with the tours to try and find solutions, and that door remains open.' Wimbledon starts on June 30 and runs until July 13. For the first time in the oldest Grand Slam, line judges will be replaced with electronic line-calling. ___ AP tennis: recommended
