#SHOWBIZ: Yuna to Jojo Ghazali: Keep on fighting, many are still supporting you

KUALA LUMPUR: Singer Yuna recently offered words of encouragement to Malaysian Muay Thai champion, Johan Ghazali, also known as Jojo, who faced criticism after his recent match loss. The 38-year-old artiste commented on Jojo's Instagram post, urging him to persevere despite the criticism. Yuna added that the negative remarks came from only a small number of detractors, while most of his fans continued to show their support with kind and encouraging comments for the 18-year-old national athlete. "Keep fighting. Believe me, this condemnation is likely from that 10 per cent who have too much time on their hands to criticise people on social media," she wrote. "But there are many others who still have your back. You just have to keep on fighting. Do it for yourself and your family. We remain proud of you." Jojo recently lost to Colombian-American Diego Paez in an exciting bout at ONE Fight Night 32 at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Herry's different approach as coach bearing fruit for men's doubles

That's the way: Herry Iman Pierngadi (second from left) hugging Man Wei Chong after he and Tee Kai Wun (right) beat Japan's Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi in the Malaysian Masters semi-finals last month. PETALING JAYA: A coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life. It is a famous saying by American basketball trainer John Wooden and one that is greatly followed by national doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. In fact, the 62-year-old Herry displays Wooden's slogan instead of his photo on his WhatsApp's profile. With such a profound belief in his calling as a coach, no wonder Herry has been able to transform the image of the Malaysian men's doubles department in just six months. From a washout at the All-England in March, the men's doubles under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have now contributed five titles in the first half of the year through former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. Aaron lifted the Asian championships, Thailand Open and Singapore Open titles while Wei Chong-Kai Wun bagged the Malaysian Masters and entered the Indonesian Open final under the guidance of Herry since early February. It was such a turnaround especially after men's doubles wilted at the All-England in March when none made it past the first round. Wei Chong-Kai Wun also won the Indonesian Masters this year and reached the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open but that was before the arrival of Herry. 'The role of coach is more than just coaching,' said Herry, who has a four-year contract with BAM. 'It's about making a difference in the life of the players. I want them to be successful on and off the court. 'It's about trusting each other – the players and coach; also having a good communication, and being like a father to these players,' said Herry. Herry's calm manner and years of experience as Indonesia's long-serving doubles coach for almost three decades is rubbing off on the Malaysians, and the challenge now is to keep the momentum going in the second half of the year. 'It's a joy for a coach to see his players doing well. I'm so happy to see Man-Tee reaching the final of the Indonesian Open. Earlier, Aaron-Wooi Yik stayed solid for three weeks in a row,' said Herry. 'I think, the greater sense of accomplishment is seeing the change in the players' mindset ... they are now playing with more confidence,' he added. With a strong showing so far, naturally all eyes will be at the World Championships in Paris in August. Since Aaron-Wooi Yik ended the country's wait by winning the world title for the first time at the 2022 edition in Japan, Malaysia's men's doubles campaign has been rather quiet and it's time to make some noise again. In leading to the worlds, Herry's boys will firstly be out make their marks at the back-to-back Japan Open from July 15-20 and China Open from July 22-27. Last year, professional shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani captured both the men's doubles title in Japan and China.

Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: Anil, who is also Lahad Datu Umno Youth Chief cum Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth Exco, was previously among those mentioned as a potential BN candidate for the Kunak state constituency in the upcoming election. KUNAK: Sabah Football Association (Safa) Kunak President, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu, announced his resignation effective Sunday after 14 years of service. He said the decision was made after several discussions, including with the district-level football body committee. Advertisement 'One of the reasons I am stepping down is to fully focus on preparations for the upcoming State Election (PRN), especially in Kunak,' he said on Sunday. He was met at the Kunak Town Field while witnessing the football final organised by Safa Kunak between Mostyn FC and Uncle Chang FC. In the match, Uncle Chang FC from Semporna emerged champions through a penalty shootout after both teams were tied without goals at the end of the match. Anil, who is also Lahad Datu Umno Youth Chief cum Barisan Nasional (BN) Youth Exco, was previously among those mentioned as a potential BN candidate for the Kunak state constituency in the upcoming election. Other than that, he said, it is time for him to give space and opportunity to other individuals to lead Safa Kunak. 'I hope this football association will continue to achieve greater success in the future. Thank you to all parties, agencies, and departments involved either directly or indirectly in supporting each sports development programme, especially football, in this district,' he said. Safa Kunak recorded several achievements under his leadership, including the discovery of several Under-23 and Under-18 young players who were featured in the State Safa squad, as well as national-level tournaments. Anil said he will continue to give strong support to local teams in the district striving to produce young talents in football and other sports development. On the same matter, he said the development of sports facilities should be expedited, with the need for a sports complex in Kunak being a key priority to ensure athletes have proper and comfortable facilities across various sports. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
