Simon Harris holds talks with Haitian counterpart over Gena Heraty kidnapping

Yahooa day ago
Ireland's deputy premier Simon Harris has held talks with his Haitian counterpart about the kidnapping of Irish woman Gena Heraty.
Mr Harris, Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, spoke to Haiti's foreign minister, Harvel Jean-Baptiste by phone and asked that everything is done to ensure the release of Ms Heraty and the other hostages, including a three-year-old child.
Ms Heraty was kidnapped along with seven other people from an orphanage in Haiti.
Ms Heraty is originally from Westport in Co Mayo.
She oversees the orphanage, which is run by the humanitarian organisation Nos Petits Freres Et Soeurs (Our Little Brothers And Sisters).
It is understood Ms Heraty was among seven employees who were taken in the incident as well as the young child.
Speaking after the call, Mr Harris said: 'I welcome my engagement with Minister Harvel Jean Baptiste after what has been an extremely traumatic few days for the Heraty family, as well as the families of all those who were kidnapped.
'The minister assured me of his support in our work to ensure the safe release of Gena, and all the hostages, who have gone through the most horrendous of ordeals.
'We have agreed to stay in touch about the case, which remains extremely sensitive.
'My officials in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are in constant contact with the Heraty family.
'When we have further updates, we will provide them.'
Mr Harris said he had been in contact with Ms Heraty's family on Monday.
Ms Heraty is a member of Viatores Christi, a lay missionary organisation.
In a statement, the group said Ms Heraty was taken by armed individuals from her home at the NPFS (Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs) compound in Kenscoff on Sunday morning.
'Gena has worked in Haiti for over 30 years, dedicating her life to children and adults with disabilities through her leadership of NPFS's Special Needs Programme,' it said.
'Her commitment, compassion and steady presence have made a lasting difference to many families in the region.
'Our organisation has supported NPFS's work for a number of years and has seen first-hand the impact of Gena's efforts. We are in close contact with our partners on the ground and remain hopeful for her safe return.
'We are thinking of Gena, her family and colleagues, and the adults and children in her care. We ask that her privacy — and that of those closest to her — be respected as efforts continue to clarify the situation.'
The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance.

'Don't fall for their lies': Herzog slams int'l media on falling for Hamas starvation propaganda

Herzog expressed outrage that staged images of hunger in Gaza were gaining more global attention than videos of hostages Evyatar David and Rom Braslavsky. President Isaac Herzog urged the world "not to fall for Hamas's lies," during a diplomatic meeting with Estonian President Alar Karis on Wednesday. The Israeli president and First Lady, Michal, attended the meeting at the Presidential Palace in Tallinn, Estonia's capital. During the meeting, Herzog expressed outrage that staged images of hunger in Gaza were gaining more global attention than videos of hostages Evyatar David and Rom Braslavsky. Standing beside Karis, Herzog displayed photos of the two emaciated hostages, who remain captive under Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). "This is an image of Evyatar David, a young kid who was at the party, at the Nova Festival, and he is now skin and bones. His situation is life-threatening. And you see the fat hand of his captor – they have food there. The other room is full of food – the hostages who came out of this tunnel told us," Herzog stated. "And this is Rom Braslavski, another hostage they aired in a video two days ago. All the other hostages – they are in a life-threatening situation," he added. Herzog emphasized Israel's recent humanitarian efforts in Gaza while stressing the urgency of resolving the hostage crisis: "Therefore, in order to resolve the situation, we tell the world: You want to move forward? Get a hostage deal, get a ceasefire. In the last two weeks, Israel has overhauled the entire approach to the humanitarian situation, pushing in major quantities of humanitarian aid, 30,000 tons in the last week, 30 tons only by air drops yesterday, hundreds of trucks." He also criticized the United Nations for logistical failures, stating, "The UN is holding hundreds of trucks, almost 800 trucks. The UN can distribute and is failing to distribute." Herzog then drew attention to a staged Gaza photo that appeared in a German newspaper, depicting Gazans holding empty pots for the cameras rather than waiting for food distribution. "Instead of that, we see a PR campaign like this one revealed in a German newspaper. You see a photographer staging the Gaza people to show that they are lacking food. This is staged. We don't shy away from the humanitarian need to help the people of Gaza, but we ask the world not to fall for the lies. Condemn Hamas and say to Hamas, 'You want to move on? Get the hostages out.'" Israeli military chief warns against takeover of Gaza as Netanyahu considers ‘full conquest' of besieged territory

Israel's military chief warned against a full takeover of Gaza, according to three Israeli sources familiar with the discussions, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considers ordering the 'conquest' of the besieged territory. In a meeting with top officials on Tuesday evening, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir cautioned that fully conquering Gaza would trap the military within the enclave and put the remaining hostages at risk, the sources said. Such a move, Zamir said, would also increase the burden on Israeli forces when the military is already suffering from attrition and burnout rates amongst reservist forces. According to two of the sources, Zamir's plan called for encircling Gaza City and other neighborhoods in which hostages might be held, while Netanyahu was pushing for a more intrusive operation into the heart of the areas. Netanyahu will urge a meeting of the security cabinet Thursday to support the full 'conquest of the Strip', CNN has previously reported, in what would mark a major escalation of the Israeli campaign at a time when the government is under international pressure for a truce. The latest disagreement underscores the growing discord between Israel's military leadership and its political echelon. Israel's military has recommended pursuing diplomacy to end the war, while Netanyahu and his government have pushed for maximalist war goals. The Israeli military says it already controls approximately 75% of Gaza following nearly two years of war which has left much of the territory in ruins and triggered a humanitarian crisis. Israel withdrew from Gaza two decades ago, but Zamir warned that a complete military occupation could ensnare the IDF anew. Zamir's warning once again put the new military chief at odds with the far-right parties in Israel's government, who have repeatedly called for broadening Israel's bombardment and siege of Gaza to destroy Hamas, something Israel has been unable to do despite nearly two years of fighting. Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir demanded on social media that Zamir publicly state 'in his own voice' that he will follow the country's political leadership, 'even if a decision is made regarding conquest and decisive action.' After Tuesday's meeting, the Prime Minister's Office issued an official statement stating that, 'the IDF is prepared to implement any decision made by the Security Cabinet.' On Wednesday, Netanyahu also met with the leader of Israel's opposition, Yair Lapid, who issued a video statement afterwards calling the conquest of Gaza 'a very bad idea.' 'You don't embark on such a move unless most of the nation is behind you,' said Lapid. The people of Israel are not interested in this war - we will pay too have a price for it.' Polling has repeatedly shown that the majority of Israelis favor an end to the war in exchange for the release of the remaining 50 hostages in Gaza. Gaza's health ministry meanwhile reported its highest death toll in weeks on Wednesday, with 138 killed in the past 24 hours. Five people died of hunger in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said Wednesday, bringing the total number of those who died of starvation and malnutrition to 193, including 96 children. COGAT, the Israeli agency responsible for bringing aid into Gaza, said close to 300 trucks entered Gaza and were collected and distributed by the UN and international organizations on Tuesday, adding that 110 pallets of aid were airdropped in cooperation with the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Germany, Canada and Belgium. However, the Hamas-controlled Media Office said that only 84 trucks made it into the enclave on Tuesday, adding that the strip needs at least 600 relief and fuel trucks daily to meet the basic needs of the population.
