Dior reinvents Lewis Carroll's Alice for the Brat era at Paris fashion week
A snowy white cross-backed lace pinafore dress was worn with a quivering black silk mohican headdress. Alice's striped stockings were reimagined as lace-up leather gladiator boots. Her frothy skirt became a birdcage crinoline, her girlish ribbons were knotted dog collar-tight at the throat. In the front row, Pamela Anderson smiled beneath a dotted black veil, and Venus Williams was resplendent in tightly coiled braids. A fantastical landscape featuring lions in feather headdresses and plants that sprouted eyes as well as blooms was embroidered all over the walls a stage set in the garden of the Musée Rodin.
Escapism is a diplomatic answer to the tight spot in which many fashion designers now find themselves. Dior, where the designer Maria Grazia Chiuri has spelt out her worldview with feminist slogan T-shirts and advocated for diversity via a long-term collaboration with a Mumbai school for female craftworkers, has been at the forefront of a decade in which progressive principles became the mainstream in fashion.
With Trump's second term shifting the tectonic plates of culture, fashion is feeling the pressure to fall into line. Asked backstage before the show whether politics had influenced this collection, Chiuri said it had not, but added that 'fashion is a playground for the imagination. And in your imagination, you can create for yourself the world that you want to live in'.
Dior is in the headlights of the vibe shift. It is emerging as the most high status wardrobe in the court of Trump, with skirt suits in the distinctively hourglass silhouette of Dior's famous New Look worn by Melania Trump on election night, and by Ivanka Trump at the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by Dior's CEO, Delphine Arnault, and her billionaire father Bernard.
Here, Chiuri swapped the signature New Look for a lesser-known chapter of Dior history, when her job was held by a young Yves Saint Laurent, who presented a new trapeze silhouette consisting of babydoll dresses with a graphic A-line shape that all but ignored the waist. She fused this reference to late 1950s Dior with details borrowed from the gothically charged Alice in Wonderland depicted in Dorothea Tanning's surrealist paintings. Her gravity-defying hair and the jellyfish-tangle of her skirts showed up on the runway. Chiuri said backstage that she liked 'the idea of nonsense'.

Dior has boomed under Chiuri, its designer since 2016. HSBC recently estimated that revenues more than tripled from €2.7bn (£2.3bn) in 2018 to €9bn in 2023. Because it enjoys a substantial slice of the US luxury market, Dior has benefitted from the recent strength of the dollar. With a new designer creating excitement around its great rival Chanel, however, there have been persistent rumours of a change at Dior. With this collection - spirited, elegant and defiantly disorientating - the usually straight-talking Chiuri gave no clear answers.

River Island's £35 'Taylor Swift' dress that was £85 matches new 'Showgirl' era
Swifties can now match with their favourite singer with this sparkly orange dress Taylor Swift fans have been thrilled today, August 12, after the hit Eras Tour star announced that her 12th studio album will be coming out soon. Talking on her boyfriend and his brother's popular podcast, New Heights, early this morning, at 12.12am, she said her new record is called The Life Of A Showgirl. She kept the album cover hidden, and the rest of the artwork has yet to be revealed, but we know this upcoming 'Showgirl' era will have a colourful theme of orange and green. Taylor Swift's current profile picture on her social media accounts is a glittery orange padlock on top of a green background. The official Taylor Swift store is already teasing fans with pre-orders, and the aesthetic features a warm, orange, autumnal glow with a hint of glitter. To mark the news of her upcoming album, numerous fashion retailers have dropped the price of their orange and green coloured garments. For instance, River Island has reduced the cost of several orange shirts, tops, dresses and shoes. One particular piece of clothing perfectly matches Swift's glittery orange padlock, and it has dropped in price considerably. The high-street store's Orange Sequin Embellished Slip Midi Dress was £85, but it can now be purchased for just £35. The dress features all-over sequins to create a glittery effect, much like the promotional art for 'TS12'. Its bright shade of orange is also a fantastic match. The slip dress finishes just above the ankles and includes a cowl neckline. Sizes vary from a UK size six to a 16. The model wearing the Orange Sequin Embellished Slip Midi Dress in the pictures online teams the gown with black strappy heels, a thick gold bracelet and gold earrings. If you are looking to match Taylor Swift's latest album, there are plenty of other orange and green items to consider besides River Island, such as this Never Fully Dressed sequin tank top co-ord that's available on ASOS for £79. New Look is selling this AX Paris Green Printed Slit Hem Maxi Dress for £48. Another option for something a bit different is this rose gold plated Philip Jones Padlock Necklace with Zircondia Crystals for £9.99. If you like the look of River Island's £35 Orange Sequin Embellished Slip Midi Dress, it can be bought online and delivered to your door for an extra £4. However, delivery is free on orders over £65. There aren't any reviews for the dress on River Island's website, but for those keen for customer feedback, reading through reviews on Trustpilot may help. On the website, one shopper who left a five-star review said: "Love River Island staff members and managers are so helpful and friendly l love their clothing and accessories brillant store hope the survive as the best shop on high street for great quality clothing shop nowhere else." Another said: "River island shoes and clothes are true to size and I only shop from River Island. I shop from River island at least twice a month." A third put: "Great range of quality clothing. Sizing is accurate and store staff are always helpful. Love shopping here!" However, some unimpressed shoppers left comments. One wrote: "Sizing is awful!!! I'm a size 10 normally so I ordered some high waisted shorts in a 10. Couldn't get them to do up at all!! Ordered a 12 and the exact same thing!! Went straight back." A second said: "Products arrived in good order but I paid for a specific delivery day and this was not honoured." A third claimed: "I used to like River Island but the last couple of times I've ordered clothes they have been sent stuffed into bags that are too small for the items and have had strong smells." But not all feedback is poor. Another pleased shopper said: "Overall, I'm loving shopping at River Island this season—great style, great service, great vibe." One more said: "I always have a positive experience in-store but have recently also used their online service and ordered to collect in store. The items arrived promptly and you can return easily to the store. Really pleased."

This Is The Only Foundation That's Seen Me Through Every UK Heatwave This Year
I would argue that summer is the hardest time of the year to find the best foundation. Finding a sweatproof, water-resistant, yet glowing formula with the right amount of coverage can seem almost impossible. My list of requirements for complexion products is particularly long, but in a nutshell, I want a product that looks like skin, but better. Throughout a summer of holidays, weddings abroad, and evenings spent lounging in the garden, I need a foundation that suits every occasion. After much testing and deliberation, there's only one that gets my seal of approval for a summer of heatwaves - Dior's Backstage Face and Body Foundation, £41. As a beauty writer, I don't tend to be monogamous with foundation, but I always find myself coming back to this one, especially in the warmer months. Offering longevity through high humidity and contact with water, and after years of trying many different formulas, it works wonders. When I need a foundation that can withstand a hot, humid climate, look perfect in photos, but still manages to look naturally radiant, this is the foundation I will always choose. It's also one you can get your hands on at duty-free, FYI. 1. Shop: Dior Backstage Face and Body Foundation For me, full-coverage foundations no longer hit the spot. Instead, I look for a buildable formula that can be worked into the skin to add more coverage in specific areas. Not only do I love the glowing finish of Face and Body, but this foundation applies effortlessly on the skin, whether you use a brush, blender or your fingers. The super-light, liquid texture feels weightless while boosting hydration. The formula combines squalane and hyaluronic acid, saving my make-up from looking dehydrated throughout a hot day. The thing I love most is that the water-based formula glides onto the skin, but it sets in place, giving me the security of a velvet finish that will stay intact until I decide to cleanse. I wear shade 2N out of the impressive 40-shade range, and with a range of undertones available, it's unlikely for you not to find your perfect your-skin-but-better match. I'd recommend this foundation for brides, wedding guests and those looking for that perfect summer base to see them through every heatwave - I promise you won't regret it. Back to Boden, the Empire Broderie Tea Dress has received a rating of around 4.5 out of five stars, based on three reviews. One pleased shopper said: "This dress is absolutely stunning. Even prettier than the photos, well worth the investment I can see me getting such a lot of wear out of this dress in the summer and holidays. Just to mention the quality of this dress is exceptional too." While one customer was happy with their purchase, they did point out there were a few aspects of the dress they thought could be different. "A beautifully cut dress," they said. "With fabulous quality heavier weight linen, which fits and hangs well. I am a size 10, with a fuller bust and the bodice fits like a glove." They continued: "The one thing to mention is that the embroidery around the cut work is a slightly different shade to the dress itself, as it is a more cream white. Also, the lining in the skirt could be a tad longer as it finishes part way through the cut work. Either that or it could be shorter to finish above this cut work. All in all though, a lovely dress, which I'm looking forward to wearing." The purchaser gave the dress a rating of four out of five stars. But another customer was seemingly delighted with the dress. They reviewed: "I love this I vary with sizes in Boden I'm either a 12 with the shirt/button down type and a 10 in some of the others. This 10 fitted me well really lovely shape and beautiful material, great dress".
