The loss of the federal funding would not be surprising given the protracted planning, Kane said, but it would 'speak to a bigger issue, which is the fact that we just can't seem to move big projects quickly around here.'
Still, it is early in the complicated budget reconciliation process. The proposal could fail to clear both chambers of Congress — and if it does pass, the move to claw back the funds might end up being challenged in court.

'We're kind of in the second inning here of a nine-inning game,' said Tom Glynn, one of the most prominent civic leaders in Boston. 'A lot of this is uncharted territory and needs to get sorted out.'
Regardless of what happens, Gadbois, a fierce advocate of the Allston Multimodal Project, said they are confident 'there is still a path forward,' calling the development 'an unfortunate step backwards.'
'But I don't want to treat it like a foregone conclusion either,' Gadbois said. 'In a moment where the federal level of government is attacking these kinds of initiatives, I think it presents an even stronger moment for MassDOT to stand strong to the commitments it's making to the Allston community and build a project that does right by them today and for the future generations of community members that will live there.'

US budget deficit up 20% year-over-year despite record Trump tariff income
WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite the U.S. taking in record income from President Donald Trump's tariffs in July — with a 273% increase in customs revenues (or $21 billion) from this time last year — the U.S. budget deficit is still higher, according to Treasury Department data released Tuesday. The government's shortfall has climbed 20% this fiscal year compared to the same period in 2024. Even as Trump talks about America becoming rich because of his import tax hikes, federal spending keeps outpacing the revenues collected by the government. That financial picture might change as companies exhaust their pre-tariff inventories, forcing them to import more goods and generate even more in tax revenues that could whittle away at the deficit without meaningfully reducing it as promised. If tariffs fail to deliver on Trump's pledge to improve the government's balance sheet, the American public could be faced with fewer job options, more inflationary pressures and higher interest rates on mortgages, auto loans and credit cards. The budget deficit is the annual gap between what the U.S. government raises in taxes and what it spends, over time feeding into the overall national debt. A Treasury official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the data said overall increased spending is in part due to a mix of expenditures, including growing interest payments on the public debt and cost-of-living increases to Social Security payouts, among other costs. This comes as the federal government's gross national debt creeps up to the $37 trillion mark. While organizations like the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget say that tariff income can be a stream of meaningful revenue — estimated to generate about $1.3 trillion over the course of President Trump's four-year term in office; some economists like Kent Smetters of the University of Pennsylvania's Penn Wharton Budget Model say tariffs are likely to result ' in only modest reductions in federal debt.' In June, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff plan would cut deficits by $2.8 trillion over a 10-year period while shrinking the economy, raising the inflation rate and reducing the purchasing power of households overall. But revenue estimates are also difficult to predict as the president has changed his tariff rates repeatedly and the taxes declared as part of an economic emergency are currently under appeal in a U.S. court. A Treasury official did not respond to an Associated Press request for comment on when the U.S. could begin to see tariff revenue start to put a dent in the deficit. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last month on Fox Business Network's 'Mornings with Maria' that the administration is 'laser-focused on bringing this deficit down.' The Trump administration expects to make more trade deals with other nations, including China and other major economies. For instance, on Monday, Trump extended a trade truce with China for another 90 days, which preserves the 30% tariffs he had imposed as a condition for negotiations. The previous deadline was set to expire at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that he signed the executive order for the extension, and that 'all other elements of the Agreement will remain the same.' Tariffs bring in record $27.7 billion in July as Trump calls haul 'incredible for our country'
President Trump's tariffs poured billions into US coffers in July as he continued to reshape the US trade landscape, putting the revenue supplied by importers at another monthly record. New data from the Treasury Department released Tuesday afternoon confirmed that June marked another record month on the revenue front, with some $27.7 billion in customs duties coming into US coffers. This was another step up from June's total of $26.6 billion and May's total of $22.2 billion. It represents a significant jump from around $8 billion in customs duties one year ago and brings the total for the fiscal year to around $135.7 billion. The government's fiscal year ends Sept. 30. Read more: The latest news and updates on Trump's tariffs The latest data is a continuation of the revenue spikes seen during Trump's second term in office, which are dwarfing counts from recent history, as well as the amounts collected during Trump's first term. Trump has frequently touted the new revenue source, writing in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday that it "has been incredible for our Country, its Stock Market, its General Wealth, and just about everything else." In that same post, Trump also attacked Goldman Sachs (GS) over its research and forecasts on tariffs and claimed tariff-related revenues were actually in the "trillions." The data also confirmed, however, that tariffs still don't make up a major piece of US government receipts, even in months like July, which the Treasury Department noted is generally softer on revenue "since there are usually no major corporate or individual tax due dates in this month." This latest Treasury monthly statement showed that total government receipts for the month topped $338 billion, meaning tariff-related revenues accounted for less than 10% of the total. Tariff revenue also hasn't helped make a dent in the overall US budget deficit, which grew around $291 billion last month. The gap for the 10 months through July came in around $1.63 trillion. And then there's the question of who ultimately pays the tariffs that supply that revenue to the US government. Contrary to Trump's claims, economists agree that the countries on which Trump has slapped tariffs do not ultimately foot the bill. Read more: What Trump's tariffs mean for the economy and your wallet In research this week, Goldman Sachs estimated that as of June, US businesses have borne the brunt of tariff price hikes — 64%, according to economists led by Jan Hatzius. Consumers' share of tariff hikes was only 22% through that time period. That mix could soon flip, the analysts noted. By October, US businesses could largely pass on those costs to consumers. Goldman Sachs estimates that consumers could foot around 67% of tariff costs by October, compared to just 8% for US businesses. Foreign exporters' share would sit around 25%, Goldman Sachs said. Still, tariff revenue numbers are likely to continue climbing in the coming months as Trump's tariffs take full effect. Measures that went into effect last week raised tariff rates on goods from dozens of partners, including the European Union, Japan, and South Korea. Another significant trade partner, India, is facing levies of 50% in the coming weeks. The latest complete tally, according to recent calculations from the Yale Budget Lab, shows that the US overall average effective tariff rate will jump to 18.6%, the highest level since 1933.

Trump's BLS Pick Calls For Suspension Of Monthly Jobs Report: Data 'Needs To Be Fixed Immediately'
E.J. Antoni, the economist tapped by President Donald Trump to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics and an architect of the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025, suggested the agency should suspend monthly jobs reports in a Tuesday television appearance. Antoni appeared on Fox Business Tuesday morning to discuss Trump's lack of confidence in the Bureau's monthly job data. 'How on earth are businesses supposed to plan – or how is the Fed supposed to conduct monetary policy – when they don't know how many jobs are being added or lost in our economy? It's a serious problem that needs to be fixed immediately,' Antoni told FOX Business. Suspending Job Reports: A Risky Proposition Trump nominated Antoni to the position after his unprecedented firing of former BLS Chief, Erika McEntarfer, on Aug. 1. The Bureau's July jobs report showed nonfarm payrolls rising by 73,000, far below economists' estimates of 110,000. The report also included a revision of May and June's tallies, down by over 100,000 each. Similar revisions were observed during the Biden Administration. 'Until it is corrected, the BLS should suspend issuing the monthly job reports but keep publishing the more accurate, though less timely, quarterly data,' Antoni added. 'Major decision-makers from Wall Street to D.C. rely on these numbers, and a lack of confidence in the data has far-reaching consequences.' Can Data Integrity Survive Political Pressure? Trump called the jobs report 'rigged' and 'fake' following his firing of McEntarfer. Top economists dismissed Trump and Antoni's insinuations and reiterated that attempts to erode the independence of reporting agencies could sow distrust in markets. '[Suspending monthly jobs reports] would [be] a serious mistake in my estimation. It would only fuel critiques of a politicization of job market data and likely result in volatility across asset classes,' RSM US chief economist Joe Brusuelas told Axios. Withholding or fabricating economic data is a common practice observed in many authoritarian regimes, such as the Soviet Union during the 1980s. The Dangers Of Distrust In Economic Data University of Michigan professor Justin Wolfers described Antoni as unqualified for the position in a post on X. 'Antoni finished grad school 5 years ago at Northern Illinois with no obvious distinction, his dissertation is meh, and involved no research on labor markets or data collection, he has never published a paper, and his life's work has earned 1 citation,' Wolfers said. 'This record would be insufficient to earn a job as a junior staffer at BLS.'
