SuperSport United give it away to share points with Polokwane City

IOL News26-04-2025

THE good old cliché 'games in hand do not equal points in the bag' rang true at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium as SuperSport United's efforts to move off the bottom of the Premiership hit a snag in yesterday's 1-1 draw.
Uncharacteristically languishing in the relegation zone, the three-time league champions are thought by many to be in with a chance of avoiding the playoffs, given they have played less matches than their opponents.
But that is assuming they would win those.
Expectations were they'd bag the maximum three against a City side that have gone off the boil that initially saw them looking like serious top-three contenders early in the season.
And when they took the lead early on via a Christian Saile headed goal at the near post from a corner kick, hope sprang eternal for Andre Arendse and his team that they'd bring an end to their long winless run.
Prior to this match, SuperSport were without a victory in their last five matches, but the goal – coming as it did shortly after they'd threatened from a similarly in-swinging corner – suggested they had the beating of their hosts.
Incredulously though, Bafana Bafana defender Nyiko Mobbie contrived to rob his team of the maximum points just before halftime when he clumsily and needlessly dove into a tackle to hack Bonginkosi Dlamini inside the box.
It was a clear penalty which Lebohang Nkaki converted with ease as SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss moved too early from his line and went the wrong way.
Matches between these two teams have historically been closely-contested affairs, and this one was not going to deviate from the script as the match see-sawed from one end to the other without there being further goals.
There were attempts either way though as Brian Okoth did well to flail away a sweetly struck Neo Rapoo free kick that looked to be dipping under the crossbar five minutes from halftime.
Saile fashioned a brilliant opportunity to complete his brace on 64 minutes, the Congolese striker turning his marker inside out, only to hoof the ball over afterwards as he lost his balance and kicked while falling.
The home side responded with a chance of their own five minutes later as Mokibelo Ramabu managed a good turn on the edge of the box, but shot tamely to give Goss easy pickings.
Five minutes from the end, Manuel Kambala smashed the ball hard and on target from just outside the box, but Goss was equal to the task and kept the scoreline level.
Not the kind of result either team would have been particularly enthused with, SuperSport moreso – Matsatsantsa only moving to 23 points – equal to bottom-placed Cape Town City, who have played two matches more.
SuperSport are going to have to make those matches in hand count for three points, or they could find themselves in a spot of bother.

Orlando Pirates sign an exciting replacement for Paseka Mako

Orlando Pirates are moving quickly to redress the balance in their squad, with several players already confirmed as leaving. Innocent Maela and Thabiso Monyane have left. Exciting teenage prospect Neo Rapoo is on the wish list. According to reports, Pirates have approached SuperSport United to sign teenager Neo Rapoo. Born in 2005, the Matsatsantsa star can operate in both full-back positions. 'Neo is one of the players that the scouts at Orlando Pirates have identified. The club has already made inquiries about the availability of the player for next season,' an insider told KickOff . According to FARPost , Paseka Mako has joined Kaizer Chiefs until 2028 after signing a three-year deal. 'The diminutive wingback has agreed to a three-year deal with Orlando Pirates, effective July 1.' Like a shortfin Mako shark, Paseka is quick, snappy, compact and aggressive. Mako made 26 appearances in the 2024-2025 season. 2020-2021 was arguably his finest campaign, with four assists in 20 league outings. Meanwhile, 34-year-old Deon Hotto faces an uncertain long-term future. Innocent Maela has left the club, so Pirates are looking a little short at left-back. Orlando Pirates star Karim Kimvuidi eyes early exit

Orlando Pirates star Karim Kimvuidi's future at Mayfair is now under the spotlight, with signs increasingly pointing towards a potential exit ahead of the upcoming season. After two years with the Soweto giants, the Congolese midfielder finds himself at a career crossroads, driven by diminishing game time and growing frustration. Kimvuidi joined Pirates from Maritzburg United with high expectations, and while his debut season showed promise, it failed to fully take off. The 23-year-old featured in 22 matches as the Buccaneers lifted both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup. Despite those achievements, Kimvuidi started and finished only one game, a statistic that raised early concerns about his long-term role at the club. Instead of progressing in his second season, things went in the opposite direction. He made just 15 appearances. Crucially, he completed the full 90 minutes only once and was omitted entirely from 37 matchday squads. This sharp decline has unsettled the midfielder, prompting his representatives to begin exploring potential transfer options. Sources close to the player confirm that discussions have begun regarding a possible move. However, with Kimvuidi still under contract at Pirates, any exit would require a transfer fee. Importantly, Kimvuidi occupies one of the club's limited five foreign player slots, something that could influence Orlando Pirates decisions going forward. In Kinshasa, national team selectors have expressed admiration for Kimvuidi. And reportedly view regular club football as essential for a return to the international fold. 'Kimvuidi needs to be playing regular football to be considered for the national team again,' said a source in Congo familiar with the situation. He had been on the DR Congo radar prior to joining Pirates. But missing out on national duty has only intensified his desire for more consistent minutes. When Pirates secured Kimvuidi's services, they beat off stiff competition. Interest came from MLS outfit DC United, Turkish side Alanyaspor, and Moroccan clubs RSB Berkane and Olympic Safi. Should Kimvuidi leave Orlando Pirates? Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. 'I can score goals for Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates'

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are both believed to be on the hunt for a new striker ahead of next season. Both Chiefs and Pirates were looking to make a striker signing even last season during this window. But in the end, neither Chiefs or Pirates were able to make that signing. Amakhosi went on to rely on Ranga Chivaviro, Ashley du Preez and Wandile Duba. Then in January a striker finally did arrive in Tashreeq Morris, but to no help. A winger in the sense of Glody Lilepo had the desired impact though, with five goals. Pirates remained with Evidence Makgopa, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Boitumelo Radiopane. Zakhele Lepasa was injured for the bulk of the season and didn't play a game. Now that the transfer market is open again, the Buccaneers and their arch rivals Chiefs have resumed their search. And now a striker from the Botswana top flight has put his and up to sign for either side. 'Whoever is interested will have to just talk to my agent and my club, I play centre-forward, right-winger, and left-winger. I can't talk too much about myself though because I know myself and what I can do. I can make it anywhere in South Africa, even at Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, I can play. But as a football player I prefer to do my talking on the pitch. I can't promise how many goals I can score in the PSL per season, but give me a chance you will see. I'm ready.' Said Congolese striker Jean Lwamba to Lwamba was the top goal score and was named player of the season in the Botswana League. This after scoring 15 goals. Should Chiefs or Pirates take a chance on him?
