How Trump's Tariffs Will Affect Every Luxury Automaker

Yahoo03-04-2025
President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on Wednesday affecting the vast majority of American trading partners, following on previously announced tariffs on lots of imports, with possibly devastating effects on the American wine industry, among numerous others.
The tariffs also impact new cars, which are to get a 25 percent tariff on imports starting this week. How that will shake out in terms of prices customers pay is, at this point, almost anyone's guess, since manufacturers will likely decide based on their own internal calculations, but experts have said that prices for customers are all but certain to go up. Ferrari, which builds all of its cars in Italy, recently said it would eat some of the cost of the tariffs while also raising prices on a few of its models as a result, to take one example.

For luxury cars, many of which are made overseas, the tariffs will be particularly significant. Like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati also make every car for sale in the U.S. in Italy, while Lexus imports many of its models for sale in the U.S. from Japan. Numerous Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, and Audi models are built overseas, to name just a few others. Each luxury automaker will have to recalibrate, and it's even possible that some marques might abandon the American market altogether.
Below is a rundown of every luxury automaker in the American market, which models it makes overseas, which it makes in the U.S., and, thus, which cars might be the most affected by tariffs. Some automakers and dealers have already reported customers rushing in to buy new cars ahead of the tariffs, which look set to complicate the new luxury car buying picture for the foreseeable future.

Judge says FTC investigation into Media Matters ‘should alarm all Americans'

A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction blocking the Federal Trade Commission's investigation into left-leaning advocacy group Media Matters. Back in 2023, Media Matters published research showing ads from major companies had appeared alongside antisemitic and other offensive content on Elon Musk-owned X. When major advertisers subsequently pulled back from the platform, X sued Media Matters. It also sued advertisers and advertiser groups over what it claimed was a 'systematic illegal boycott.' After Musk's then-ally Donald Trump took office again in January, the FTC also began an investigation into whether Media Matters had illegally colluded with advertisers. On Friday, however, Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan sided with Media Matters and blocked the FTC's investigation. In her decision, Sooknanan (a district court judge for the District of Columbia appointed by Joe Biden) wrote that the Media Matters article represented 'quintessential First Amendment activity' and the FTC's 'expansive' investigative demands appeared to be 'a retaliatory act.' 'It should alarm all Americans when the Government retaliates against individuals or organizations for engaging in constitutionally protected public debate,' she wrote. 'And that alarm should ring even louder when the Government retaliates against those engaged in newsgathering and reporting.' Sooknanan noted that before his appointment as the current FTC chair, Andrew Ferguson had appeared on Steve Bannon's podcast and called for the FTC to investigate progressive groups criticizing online disinformation, and that he subsequently 'brought on several senior staffers at the FTC who previously made public comments about Media Matters.' The FTC did not immediately respond to a TechCrunch email asking whether it intends to appeal. Sooknanan said the FTC investigation has also had its 'intended effect,' prompting Media Matters to decide 'against pursuing certain stories about the FTC, Chairman Ferguson, and Mr. Musk.'

Along With $100 Billion U.S. Manufacturing Commitment, Apple's Tim Cook Gifted Trump A Glass 'Made In USA' Plaque On 24-Karat Gold

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook earned the title of "tech's Trump whisperer" in the president's first term, and he just may have shown why. Cook gifted President Donald Trump a glass plaque with a 24-karat gold base on Aug. 6. The move came as he announced at the White House that Apple would invest $100 billion in the U.S. over the next four years, adding to the $500 billion the company had announced in February. The plaque was engraved with Trump's name, a reference to Apple's U.S. manufacturing efforts, Cook's signature and the phrase "MADE IN USA." Don't Miss: The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — Bill Gates Warned About Water Scarcity. "It's a unique unit of one," Cook said. He pointed out that the glass came from U.S. glass maker Corning (NYSE:GLW) and that the base came from Utah. What's more? Cook said it was all designed by a former U.S. Marine who now works for Apple. "Thank you very much, it's fantastic," Trump said. Cook's gift may offer a masterclass on how to curry favor with the president, combining two things of apparent symbolic importance to Trump: gold and the military. From golden tweezers to gold merchandise and, most recently, the gold card visa, Trump's love for gold is well documented. In the same vein, he is also known for his love of displays of military might, though his treatment of veterans has come under question. Still, the White House continues to deny any wrongdoing on the part of the president. "Elected leaders and business titans from around the world are traveling to the Oval Office to make historic investments into America because of President Trump's bold vision," White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told Axios. "Often these leaders are eager to share gifts highlighting the exciting work they are doing." Nonetheless, for Cook and Apple, the recent presentation has had the desired effect. During the meeting, Trump announced plans for a 100% tariff on semiconductor chips, adding that Apple would be exempt from the charge."The good news for companies like Apple is if you're building in the United States or have committed to build in the United States, there will be no charge," Trump said. Despite this major U.S. commitment and a personal exemption from new chip tariffs, Apple still faces significant challenges navigating the global trade landscape created by Trump. Cook said in May that tariffs on goods from India and Vietnam could add $900 million to its costs in its fiscal Q2. Is Walmart (WMT) a Buy Ahead of Q2 Earnings?

U.S. retail giant Walmart (WMT) is set to release its Q2 earnings report next week. This has some investors wondering whether it's a good idea to buy shares of WMT beforehand. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. What Wall Street Expects Wall Street is expecting WMT to report earnings of $0.72 per share, which would represent year-over-year growth of 7.46%. Revenues for the period are expected to come in at $175.51 billion, up 3.65% from the prior-year quarter. Will WMT be able to beat these estimates? As can be seen below, it has a very strong track record of doing just that. Key Issues Ahead of Earnings Walmart is a bellwether for the strength of the American consumer given that it is the largest retailer in the U.S. and sells everything from electronics to clothing, groceries and toys. As such, investors, analysts, economists and politicians will be looking at its results with eagle eyes. One area of particular focus, according to Victoria Scholar, Head of Investment at interactive investor, will be whether President Trump's tariffs trade policy has impacted US consumer confidence and prices. Have the import levies hit Walmart's top and bottom lines as well as prices on the shelves? 'As a company that prides itself on rock bottom prices, Walmart has already expressed frustration about the extra costs associated with tariffs, particularly from China,' Scholar said. 'Walmart delivered its first ever profitable quarter in e-commerce both domestically and globally in May, so focus next week will be on whether it can continue to grow earnings there. Investors will also be watching out for the performance of Walmart's advertising and its membership subscription Walmart+ as well as the retailer looking to bring in a diversity of revenue streams.' See below: Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell, urged investors to also look out for comments on shipping lead times, as well as inventory on the balance sheet. 'Retailing is all about shifting the right products at the right price in the right format to the target demographic. Do that, and the amount of unsold stock will be low and the need to discount to shift it will be reduced. Too much stock can mean price cutting is required and that could show up in the gross profit and then further down the profit and loss account,' she said. Is WMT a Good Stock to Buy Now? On TipRanks, WMT has a Strong Buy consensus based on 27 Buy ratings. Its highest price target is $130. WMT stock's consensus price target is $113, implying a 13.33% upside.
