‘Irresponsible show off' sentenced after killing schoolgirl crossing the road
Christopher West, 42, hit Keely Morgan with his Vauxhall Astra on Heol Trelai, Caerau, Cardiff at about 9.30pm on May 1 2023.
She died at the scene.
West, who was driving over the 30mph speed limit, failed to see the teenager, despite her being lit up by an iPad she had been using at the pedestrian crossing.
Keely had overcome significant health problems ahead of her death, having undergone a kidney transplant in 2021 to save her life.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that West's two daughters and their friend had been in the car during the incident.
One of the passengers told the police West had been 'snaking' along the road and had removed his car's black box, invalidating his insurance, to show off to them.
West, from Ely, previously pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing death while uninsured.
However, the defendant initially claimed the car's black box had been disconnected while he was working on the car, and he had forgotten to reconnect it and his driving had been normal.
His passengers said that was not correct.
Judge Paul Hobson branded West as an 'irresponsible show off' at a sentencing hearing on Thursday.
'Keely Morgan was just 15-years-old when she died on May 1 2023,' he said.
'Keely died as a result of your actions, as a result of your careless driving that evening.'
He added: 'You should have seen her and come to a stop in order to allow her to cross.
'Instead, you continued driving, oblivious to her, meaning that when Keely stepped into the road, you collided with her.'
He described Keely as a young woman who was part of a 'large family network' and her loss had 'devastated those who loved her'.
The judge said it was 'plain' that West had been driving over the 30mph limit the road had at the time.
West had been described as 'apologetic' and in a state of panic after the collision.
But the judge said: 'Any remorse that you have is overshadowed by your attempts to minimise your level of responsibility, to the extent of challenging what your own passengers were saying.
'Although you may well be sorry for what happened to Keely, a large part of your concern is for yourself.'
The judge handed West a 16-month prison sentence and disqualified him from driving for two years and eight months.
As he was sent down, there were shouts of 'f*** off' and 'disgusting' from the public gallery.

Questions about migrant hotels prevented under councils' privacy rules
Communities are not being informed about migrant hotels in their areas because it would undermine the privacy of new arrivals. Asylum seekers have been housed in hotels across the UK, often without residents being alerted. But this has raised concerns among residents and councils. This comes days after anti-migrant protesters clashed with police outside a hotel believed to house asylum seekers in Essex. Chris Whitbread, the leader of Epping Forest council, called for the Bell Hotel to be shut down after an Ethiopian asylum seeker allegedly sexually assaulted a teenager. It has been claimed that under privacy rules, the immigration status of those housed in the temporary accommodation cannot be shared with the public. Newcastle city council said that it could not inform residents that a city-centre hotel was being used by the Home Office to house migrants, saying: 'We would not share a resident's personal information with other residents, unless we had specific legal reasons to do so.' The council suggested the Home Office would be bound by the same rules. The Home Office is responsible for providing asylum accommodation and makes decisions about housing new arrivals independently of local authorities, some of which have become uneasy with the presence of migrant hotels. There are now thought to be more than 200 similar hotels across the UK, housing around 32,000 people at a projected cost of £15bn by 2029 – five times the annual cost of Britain's nuclear deterrent. In Altrincham, near Manchester, residents complained that there was an 'information vacuum' about a hotel. West Oxfordshire council has in the past complained that even councillors were not informed about plans to move in migrants. Tower Hamlets, the London borough with the largest Bangladeshi population in the UK, has told The Telegraph that 'we do not announce when asylum seeker hotels are stood up in the borough, nor do we announce when a refugee comes'. However, the presence of migrants in communities is often noticed by residents who have not been officially informed but have raised concerns about new arrivals. Police have pledged to instruct migrants in 'appropriate behaviours' after residents of Deanshanger, in Northamptonshire, raised concerns about the behaviour of new arrivals living in a hotel near a primary school. Officers drew up a PowerPoint presentation for asylum seekers in hotels on the key points of UK culture, including the fact that women 'have the same rights as men' and 'must be treated with respect and courtesy'. It warned: 'If you harass or abuse any female, you can be arrested.' It comes as illegal Channel migrant crossings are on course to hit a record total this year.

Who is this man? Detectives issue appeal after woman in her 30s is sexually assaulted as she walks alone in London in early hours
Police have issued an urgent appeal for information after a woman in her 30s was allegedly sexually assaulted while walking alone in London. The victim is understood to have been followed by a man as she walked past Hammersmith tube station, located in west London, at around 3.40am on Sunday, May 18. The man, who is then said to have caught up with the woman, sexually assaulted her before running towards Hammersmith Broadway. He is described as white with dark hair and in his 20s. Approximately 5ft 8in to 6ft tall, the suspect was also wearing a black North Face jacket, black trousers and white trainers at the time of the alleged assault. Having reported the incident to police, an immediate investigation was launched, with the victim currently receiving specialist support. Using CCTV footage, officers were then able to track the man's movements ahead of the alleged attack. There, he was seen leaving the popular station before walking along King Street, located in the heart of the west London suburb, briefly walking past another pedestrian. Following the reported incident, he was then captured running along Park Road towards Browning Avenue before officers eventually lost sight of him as he headed in the direction of a residential area. Detective Superintendent Lucy O'Connor, who is leading the Metropolitan Police's investigation into the reported incident, said that the force are urgently 'asking the public to help' them find the man in question. DSI O'Connor added: 'Women and girls should be safe to walk the streets of London without being attacked. 'That is why we need to identify a man in connection with this incident and are now asking the public to help. 'If you were in the area on the morning of Sunday, 18 May or if you recognise the man in the footage, please contact us as soon as possible.'
