2025 UFL MVP Power Rankings: Jacob Saylors headlines list after Week 1

Fox News03-04-2025

It's no secret that football MVP awards are mostly synonymous with the quarterback position.
Just look at the NFL, where a quarterback has been named the MVP in 12 straight seasons. How about the Heisman Memorial Trophy? Same story, as 12 of the past 15 recipients have been signal-callers. Even in spring football, where KaVontae Turpin was named MVP of the 2022 USFL season, then it was a pair of quarterbacks – Alex McGough (USFL) and Adrian Martinez (UFL) – who took home MVP honors after that.
Perhaps this is the year when we buck the trend, as the top standout performances in Week 1 of the 2025 UFL season belonged to the running backs. Jacob Saylors, Kalen Ballage and Jarveon Howard all had big rushing outputs in season-opening wins, but who sits atop the MVP ladder?
Here's a look at my first UFL MVP power rankings of the season:

5. Arlington Renegades QB Luis Perez
Week 1 stat line: 20 of 25 passing for 164 yardsWeek 1 result: 33-9 win against San AntonioNo quarterback has more consistently shown himself capable of winning in spring professional football leagues in the United States than Perez, who was characteristically meticulous and mature behind center, even in Week 1.
Perez, who operates the offense like co-offensive coordinator Chuck Long, showed he was attuned to all aspects of the offense. Even while the running back room took center stage in the win, Perez quietly completed 20 of 25 passes for 164 yards.
The former Division II national champion is one of just two QBs in the UFL to lead his team to a league championship, and Arlington looks ready to mount a run at winning its first UFL title. (Alex McGough led the Birmingham Stallions to the 2023 USFL title, and Perez led the Renegades to the 2023 XFL title.)
4. DC Defenders QB Jordan Ta'amu
Week 1 stat line: 17 of 37 passing for 211 yards, 1 TD, 1 INTWeek 1 result: 18-11 win against BirminghamTa'amu had earned Shannon Harris' trust, and it paid dividends. After throwing the ball nearly 40 times for 211 yards with one TD and an INT, the Defenders became just the second team to defeat the Birmingham Stallions in two years and the first to accomplish that feat in Week 1.
Now in his third season with the Defenders, Ta'amu has thrown for at least 1,800 yards when he's started 10 games. In his only season in the USFL as the starter for the Tampa Bay Bandits, he led the league in passing with 2,014 yards. Last season, he led the league in passing TDs with 15.
If Ta'amu stays healthy, the Defenders have their best chance since 2023 to play for the league championship.
3. Michigan Panthers QB Bryce Perkins
Week 1 stat line: 16 of 19 passing for 163 yards, 1 TDWeek 1 result: 26-12 win at MemphisPerkins was the most efficient and polished passer I watched all weekend and that was evident in his stat line with just three incompletions thrown all game. Though he split time with former LSU QB Danny Etling, Perkins looks like he should not only be the Panthers' full-time QB, but the best in the USFL this season.
"In every play, there's going to be a throw or a run that's available to us," Perkins said on Saturday.
Knowing that and articulating it in a postgame media conference underscores just how comfortable he is in Year 2 of Marcel Bellefueille's offense.
Perkins left Virginia as the single-season record holder for passing yards (3,538) and had the second-most wins as a starter (17) behind former Cavalier Matt Schaub. Perkins is a winner, and that might just be an intangible trait that helps Michigan battle for the USFL conference crown.
2. Arlington Renegades RB Kalen BallageWeek 1 stat line: Nine rushes for 110 yards with a TDWeek 1 result: 33-9 win against San AntonioBallage became the first player to post a 100-yard rushing game in the UFL in Week 1.
Like the running back room in St. Louis, the Arlington Renegades feasted. Ballage rushed for 110 yards on just nine carries and a TD, while De'Von Smith enjoyed a short yardage back's dream — three rushes, 3 yards, three TDs.
It seems, though, Ballage is the featured tailback after playing one of his best games as a professional. In 2016, he tied the FBS record for TDs in a single game with eight in a 68-55 win for Arizona State against Texas Tech — seven rushing TDs on 13 carries. What's more? Battlehawks QB Manny Wilkins was his quarterback at ASU.
"I thought Kalen was going to make a big difference, and he does," Renegades coach Bob Stoops said on Saturday. "I'm excited to watch him the rest of the year."
1. St. Louis Battlehawks RB Jacob Saylors
Week 1 stat line: 16 rushes for 98 yards, four catches for 48 yardsWeek 1 result: 31-6 win at HoustonThe league's 2024 rushing leader is still a menace. As was evident last season, Saylors is one of the elite tailbacks in the UFL. He showed why in the Battlehawks' Week 1 rout with 145 total yards on 20 touches. If he can hold that pace, there's no question he'll be one of the players vying for player of the year honors in June.
It helps to have what looks like the league's best offensive line unit. As the offense continues to fill out, I'll be watching to see just how much of it runs through Sayers, who looks like one of the most dynamic skill players on a formidable Battlehawks offense.
Running back Jarveon Howard's 113 rushing yards on just 13 carries opened eyes, too. And the only thing better than having one great tailback is having two. St. Louis coach Anthony Becht must feel good about the prospect of mounting a challenge for the UFL title.
Only seven players have rushed for 100 yards or more in the UFL, and three of them have been St. Louis Battlehawks. Running back Mateo Durant rushed for 104 against Arlington last season.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Reveals His Favorite Basketball Player of All Time Without Hesitation

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Reveals His Favorite Basketball Player of All Time Without Hesitation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is gearing up for Game 2 of the 2025 NBA Finals after a season to remember. Advertisement The 26-year-old won his first MVP award after leading the Thunder to the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference with a 68-14 record. In doing so, he averaged 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game. Gilgeous-Alexander continues to make a big impact on the game of basketball. While young fans now look up to the seventh-year guard, it's worth remembering that he was once in their shoes, and he had a basketball idol of his own. FISH/THE OKLAHOMAN / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images On Saturday, he spoke to the media and admitted Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant is his "favorite player of all time." 'That's probably my favorite player of all time," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "Never got the chance to meet him to answer your question but not only me, kids all across the world, his influence has gone through the roof, and his legacy will be remembered forever because of the competitor and the basketball player that he was. Hopefully, I'm somewhere close to that as a basketball player one day. But he was a special talent, special person, and God rest his soul.' Bryant is one of the greatest players to ever pick up a basketball. He was drafted No. 13 overall in the 1996 NBA Draft and went on to play 20 seasons for the Lakers. The 6-foot-6 guard was a five-time champion, a two-time Finals MVP, the 2008 league MVP, an 18-time All-Star and an 11-time All-NBA First Team selection. DK Metcalf looks forward to catching passes from ‘cerebral' Aaron Rodgers

This article originally appeared on Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf weighed in on the Aaron Rodgers' signing during his media availability on Tuesday. The All-Pro wide receiver is chomping at the bit to learn from the four-time NFL MVP quarterback. Advertisement 'Just how cerebral he is and how he views the game,' Metcalf said. 'I like the way he views the game from a receiver's standpoint, but also from a quarterback's standpoint. I think I can gain a lot of knowledge just from being around him because he's seen a lot of football. Just trying to soak up as much information as I can.' DK Metcalf believes Rodgers' skillset fits his game perfectly. 'How quickly he releases the ball and me getting off the line of scrimmage fast is one thing that stands out first,' he said. Seahawks receiver Cooper Kupp enjoying settling in with new team

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — When it comes to food recommendations in the Seattle area, new Seahawks wide receiver Cooper Kupp is open to suggestions. Just not from fellow newcomer and quarterback Sam Darnold. The veteran quarterback invited Kupp to get dinner with him earlier this offseason, and some of the suggestions caught the 31-year-old wide receiver off guard when recalling the night after the first of two minicamp practices at Virginia Mason Athletic Center, which concluded Wednesday. 'The way he came off was he wanted to go get some fries and chicken strips,' Kupp said on Tuesday. 'Look, I have a 6-year-old. I can bring you his food. I can bring that, and I'll go eat something good. It ended up being fine. He ventured out and was, like, OK. He was at least willing to try some stuff. I may have misread him. We'll see. Time will tell.' Time will also tell how well Kupp fits in with a new franchise after spending each of the past eight seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and signing a three-year, $45 million contract with the Seahawks in March. In some ways it's a homecoming for Kupp, who grew up watching the Seahawks, is from Yakima, Washington and played at Eastern Washington. He still has plenty to acclimate to, though, after all that time with an NFC West rival. Kupp referred to joining a new team as 'exciting.' 'It's been a long time since I learned a new offense, a long time since I sat in a meeting and had to put a face on the board and what's this guy's name?' Kupp said. 'That's a stressful situation. That's a high-stress situation. It's good, though. I'm excited about what we're doing, and it is fun.' He's eager to work with new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, whose system has some similarities to what is run by the Rams and their coach, Sean McVay, as well as San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and his scheme. Kubiak was the 49ers passing game coordinator in 2023 when Darnold was also with the team. 'There's going to be the nuances here and there, things like that, but a lot of similar stuff, a lot of similar ideas in how you're attacking a defense,'' Kupp said. 'I believe in this offense and what it takes to make it successful and the detail that's involved with it. … There's definitely some stuff that accentuates the things that I've done in the past.'' All Kupp has done in the past is produce — and more recently, struggle a bit to stay on the field. Each of the past three seasons, Kupp has failed to play in more than 12 games, which in part led the Rams to let the Super Bowl 56 MVP leave in free agency. Kupp said that he felt good physically, and he looked the part each day of minicamp when running routes. He faces quite the task in adding to a receiver room that is paced by third-year wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who is fresh off his first 1,000-yard season. Veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is also on the team, and he spent half of last season playing under Kubiak when the latter was the New Orleans Saints' offensive coordinator. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald has been impressed by both wideouts' approaches to learning Seattle's offense. 'They're attacking every day, man,' Macdonald said. 'Just trying to master the playbook, all the formations, all the route steps, all the timing. If you have that spirit about you every day, I mean, it's contagious, one, with the rest of the room, with the rest of the offense, the whole team. It makes it fun to go to work and enjoy the process. But, of course, that's going to expedite your growth when you have guys like that.' Still, Kupp recognizes he has much learning to do between now and when the Seahawks open their season on Sept. 7 against the 49ers. It's in part why he's already spent a bunch of time in Macdonald's office picking his brain. Kupp has enjoyed settling in with a new team and that the internal belief is what has resonated with him most. 'For any of this stuff to work, for all the goals and all the things we want to set out to achieve, it's the understanding that we're going to ultimately achieve it together,' Kupp said. 'It's going to be playing for each other. … Man, what can I do to be better for the guy next to me? This is a place that guys embody that, and they believe it. I think that makes it a fun place to come into, a fun place to come work.'
