CLT20-style World Club Championship 'on the cards', says ECB chief executive: 'That's the next logical step'

First Post07-06-2025
England and Wales Cricket Board CEO Richard Gould believes that a World Club Championship, which would be similar to the Champions League T20 that had hosted its last edition in 2014, would be the 'next logical step' and could become a reality in the near future. read more

It's been more than a decade since the Champions League T20 (CLT20) was last hosted, with cricket's answer to the UEFA Champions League in football having lasted a total of six editions between 2009 and 2014. And as is the case in the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians happen to be the most successful teams in CLT20 history with two titles each.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), however, is confident it can bring a CLT20-style tournament back into the cricketing calendar in the form of a revamped World Club Championship for the T20 format. Especially considering how T20 leagues have sprung up all over the globe with nearly every Full Member and even associates such as UAE hosting one of their own.

'That is on the cards. Without doubt, at some point, there will be a World Club Championship - for both men and women. That's the next logical step,' ECB Chief Executive told ESPNCricinfo.
CLT20 'was ahead of its time', says ECB CEO
Only a handful of cricket-playing nations besides India used to conduct T20 leagues around the time the CLT20 – which was jointly run by the BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa – was in existence, Australia's Big Bash League and West Indies' Caribbean Premier League being the most notable examples during this time.
The Pakistan Super League would come into existence shortly after the final CLT20 season and Sri Lanka (Lanka Premier League), England (The Hundred), South Africa (SA20), USA (Major League Cricket) as well as UAE (ILT20) would go on to establish their own leagues. Bangladesh Cricket Board too has been in existence for well over a decade now, but had somehow never featured in the tournament.
The CLT20 had been plagued with issues from the very beginning; the inaugural edition was originally supposed to take place in 2008 but had to be postponed by a year due to the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.
And what was to be the seventh edition of the tournament in 2015 was called off due to lack of interest from cricket fans despite providing more context to T20 leagues by having franchises from different parts of the world face each other instead of being limited to their own leagues.

'That tournament was ahead of its time. Commercially, it couldn't keep up with the expectations on it, but it was a really good event,' added Gould, who was CEO of Somerset when it participated in the inaugural edition in 2009.

Where's Sachin Tendulkar, James Anderson? Duo's Absence From Trophy Presentation Triggers Row

The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy concluded on Monday, with India clinching a heroic victory by 6 runs in the 5th and final Test against England to level the series 2-2. While the entire Indian camp was jubilant to earn a much-deserved draw, the result of the match meant that the trophy had to be shared between the two teams. However, the trophy presentation at the Kennington Oval left many fans disappointed as the greats Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson couldn't be spotted, despite the series being named after them. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy got its name after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to rename it from the Pataudi Trophy. The name change, at first, had also triggered a controversy, before the ECB decided to make some amends by introducing the winners' medals in the name of the Pataudis. Yet, when it came to the trophy presentation, none of the members of the Pataudi family, Anderson or Tendulkar were present at the Oval on Monday. The sorry sight triggered many questions among the lovers of the game, with the ECB being targeted for its failure to give Anderson, Tendulkar and the Pataudi family the honour they deserved. ENGLAND AND INDIA SHARE THE ANDERSON TENDULKAR TROPHY. — Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) August 4, 2025 Before the start of the series, the ECB had received plenty of criticism for its decision to rename the Pataudi Trophy. The board was even asked by some former cricketers to invite the members of the Pataudi family and honour them at the start of the series. However, nothing along those lines actually happened. Some thought that the ECB might look to salvage some pride by inviting them for the final match, but the series ended without seeing such a guest being honoured. Unlike the members of the Pataudi family, both Anderson and Tendulkar were present during the June trophy launch. But the ECB erred when it came to the Trophy presentation at the end of the series. It isn't yet known whether the board had even invited these esteemed guests for the trophy presentation. An official response from the ECB is awaited on the controversy.

Sachin Tendulkar, James Anderson nowhere at India-England trophy presentation named after them, ECB silent

The inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between England and India came to a thrilling end on Monday afternoon as Shubman Gill's side registered a thrilling six-run win in front of a jam-packed crowd at the Oval. Heading into the fifth and final day, England needed 35 runs while India required four wickets. The last day started off with Jamie Overton smashing two boundaries off the bowling of Prasidh Krishna, bringing the target down to 27. The inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy concluded with the scoreline 2-2. (PTI) However, Mohammed Siraj finally got his moment to shine as he led India to a memorable victory. He took three out of the remaining four wickets, completing a remarkable fifer. In the end, the visitors registered a six-run win to level the five-match series at 2-2. However, it must be mentioned that neither James Anderson nor Sachin Tendulkar was present for the trophy presentation. No one from Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi's family was also spotted handing over the Pataudi medal to Shubman Gill and Ben Stokes. The reasons for their absence are not known at this time. However, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) continues to maintain its silence. Before the start of the series between India and England, the ECB confirmed their decision to retire the Pataudi Trophy and rename it after two modern-day greats - James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar. The Pataudi Trophy was launched before the 2007 series between the two countries. On that occasion, Mansoor Ali Khan had himself presented it to the then-India captain, Rahul Dravid, for winning the series 1-0. However, the duo was nowhere to be seen at the end presentation ceremony. Siraj's lion-hearted effort Mohammed Siraj finished as the leading wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with 23 scalps to his name. In the Oval Test against England, Siraj returned with nine wickets, including a crucial fifer in the second innings. Siraj took the final wicket for India as his ripping yorker castled the stumps of Gus Atkinson, leading to some joyous scenes in the Indian dressing room. In the morning session of Day 4, Siraj dropped the crucial catch of Harry Brook, and England's No.5 went on to smash 111 runs. However, Siraj took it upon himself to undo his mistake, and as fate would have it, the pacer did so and in some style. "I thought the match was gone. Had we got Harry Brook out before lunch, things would have been different. There would have been no fifth day. That was a game-changing moment. But we came back strongly after that," Siraj said after leading India to a victory. "When I woke up this morning, I told myself I would change the game. I opened Google, downloaded a 'believe' image and put that as my phone wallpaper," he added.

MS Dhoni's business empire: Brands, startups, and major investments

'It doesn't matter how you start, just finish it like Dhoni,' is a popular quote created by fans, derived from former Indian skipper MS Dhoni's time with the Indian cricket team when he became famous for winning matches for his team with his big-hitting abilities after taking the match into the final overs from an impossible-looking situation. However, while the quote is not officially given by the man himself, he sure does live by this code. Dhoni started many business ventures and invested in just as many, practically building a business empire of his own. The former Indian skipper recently added yet another investment project to his portfolio by investing in a cloud kitchen venture which goes by the name House of Biryani (HOB), as mentioned in an advertorial in a major newspaper. Not his first rodeo Dhoni investing in HOB is not the first time the former Indian skipper has decided to invest in an up-and-coming business, as we have already mentioned earlier in the story. He has a long portfolio of companies where he either invested or founded/co-founded. From founding Seven to Hotel Mahi Residency or investing in projects like HOB, Dhoni has built a business empire of his own.
