SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Officially Brings in Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Michael Mando as Scorpion — GeekTyrant

Geek Tyrant5 days ago
Spider-Man: Brand New Day just leveled up in a big way. With production about to kick off, it's been officially confirmed that Mark Ruffalo and Michael Mando are joining the upcoming Marvel Studios film, and it sounds like both will play key roles in the story.
Ruffalo will reprise his role as Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk, a role he's been crushing since The Avengers . From Thor: Ragnarok to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law , he's been a consistent force in the MCU and it's awesome to see him now enter Spider-Man's corner of the universe.
Mando returns as Mac Gargan, the character he first portrayed in Spider-Man: Homecoming . But this time, he's expected to go full villain and finally become the Scorpion.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gargan will be a major part of a big action sequence set to be filmed in Glasgow, Scotland. Word is that he's being transported in a DODC convoy when he's suddenly targeted by The Punisher. That's when Spider-Man jumps into the fray.
Fans will remember Gargan's brief appearance in Homecoming , where he tried to pry Spider-Man's identity from The Vulture after getting seriously injured. He's presumably been locked up ever since, and while we don't yet know how he gets his Scorpion gear, it sounds like we'll finally see him unleashed.
The film is shaping up to be an intense street-level brawl, and Marvel is clearly bringing in a strong mix of characters for that vibe, which include Jon Bernthal's Punisher. As the outlet notes, 'You can bet that, in the mighty Marvel manner, Spider-Man, Punisher and Hulk will all fight one another before figuring out who the real bad guys are.'
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige recently offered some insight into the direction of Spider-Man: Brand New Day , and it's exactly what fans hoped for after No Way Home reset the character's world.
"I think there's a promise at the end of No Way Home , that for as sad as it is that Peter is forgotten by everyone in his life, we are seeing for the first time in the Tom Holland Spider-Man stories him being a proper Spider-Man.
'Him being by himself, dedicated to saving the city, and dealing with, for lack of better terms, street-level crime, as opposed to world-ending events."
He added, "So when you do that, you say, okay, who are the other street-level characters that we've never seen him interact with? And of course, I love that The Punisher started in a Spider-Man comic."
Feige also teased what's inspiring the movie's direction: "That great cover. I don't want to say too much, but Destin, I will say too much, Destin is doing an amazing job right now on that movie, which starts shooting very soon. And he's got eight or nine comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie, which is super cool."
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton ( Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ) and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Liza Colón-Zayas. The film swings into theaters on July 31, 2026.

Rare copy of The Hobbit sells for 'record-breaking' sum

An "astonishingly rare" first edition of The Hobbit has sold for a "record-breaking" £43,000 at auction. The copy of JRR Tolkien's novel is one of only 1,500 copies that were printed in 1937. It was discovered without a dustcover on a bookcase during a home clearance in Bristol. It was sold to a private collector in the UK through an online auction at Auctioneum in Bath, Somerset, earlier. Caitlin Riley, the book specialist from the auction house, said: "It's the quintessential auction story. Everyone dreams of finding a rare item hidden in plain sight, and here we are." More news stories for Somerset Listen to the latest news for Somerset The book, which was only expected to fetch between £10,000-£12,000 at auction, attracted hundreds of bidders from all over the world. Ms Riley said the book is in "absolutely beautiful condition" and she believed it sold for a record price for a first edition without a dustcover. "House clearances can be tricky, stressful and troublesome... this could have so easily been sent to landfill, or disposed of by someone who didn't realise it was there," she added. The book came from the family library of Hubert Priestley who was a famous botanist in the 1930s and brother to the Antarctic explorer and geologist, Sir Raymond Edward Priestley. Priestley had strong connections to the University of Oxford where Tolkien stood as Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon and a Fellow of Pembroke College. Both men knew fellow author C.S. Lewis and it is likely that they knew each other. "It's the connection to Tolkien and the important provenance that makes this book so special. It's not just any first edition; it belonged to someone who very likely called Tolkien an acquaintance," Ms Riley said. She added it was astonishingly rare to find a first edition in such good condition. "Being a children's book, most of them have seen children's hands, children's colouring pens in some cases, so to have one that appears to be completely unread and never enjoyed is really, really astonishingly rare," she said. The Hobbit is one of the most successful children's novels, with more than 100 million copies sold. The story is set in the fantasy world Middle-earth and follows the hobbit Bilbo Baggins on a quest to find treasure. The rare edition that was sold also includes rare drawings by Tolkien himself. ‘Hamilton' turns 10: Lin-Manuel Miranda announces movie theater release to celebrate the Broadway musical's anniversary

The film version of the hit show will debut in theaters on Sept. 5. Rise up, Hamilton fans: The Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning Broadway musical is coming to a movie theater near you. On Tuesday's episode of The Tonight Show, Lin-Manuel Miranda announced that the feature film version of his hit musical Hamilton will make its theatrical debut on Sept. 5 in celebration of its 10th anniversary. Hamilton premiered on Broadway a decade ago today, on Aug. 6, 2015. 'I have an announcement!' Miranda, who created and originally starred in the musical, said. 'So, tomorrow is the 10-year anniversary of Hamilton, and we've been celebrating all year. But we have one more way to celebrate. We filmed most of the original cast performing in Hamilton in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted. But, Sept. 5, you will be able to see Hamilton in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico.' The film will be released in theaters in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico on Sept. 5, in the U.K. and Ireland on Sept. 26, and in Australia and New Zealand on Nov. 13, per Variety. A special screening of Hamilton, organized by the Public Theater, will take place on Sept. 3 at the Delacorte Theater in New York City's Central Park. A limited number of advance tickets will be available for purchase, followed by a free ticket lottery and free standby line the night of the event. Hamilton premiered on Disney+ in July 2020. The movie functioned as a live recording of the actual Broadway production, filmed at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June 2016, with much of the original cast performing together. Among the original cast members included in the film In addition to Miranda are Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Leslie Odom Jr. and Phillipa Soo. The month that it premiered on Disney+, Hamilton had the largest audience of any streaming program in 2020, Forbes reported. Celebrations for the Broadway musical's tenth anniversary — referred to affectionately as 'Hamilten' — are well underway. Tonight, at 7 p.m., an invite-only anniversary performance of Hamilton will take place at the Richard Rodgers Theatre and will serve as a fundraiser for the Immigrants: We Get the Job Done Coalition. A fan-focused matinee took place at 1 p.m. today, too. Tickets were priced at $10 apiece and were distributed through a lottery. Former cast members have also taken to social media to commemorate the milestone. Broadway star Javier Muñoz, who famously took over for Miranda as Alexander Hamilton in July 2016, shared a lengthy tribute to the Hamilton creator on Instagram on Wednesday afternoon. Muñoz concluded his Hamilton run in January 2018. 'It all comes down to one relationship, one colleague, one friend; Lin Manuel Miranda. My place in this journey was singular. It was exactly where I was meant to be,' Muñoz wrote. 'The list of blessings in the form of friends, chosen family, opportunities, evolution, falling in and out of love, social change, overcoming, and becoming, is too long to spotlight each. None of it IS without Lin Manuel. I'd say yes and jump off any cliffs with you, my friend. Thank you.' Soo, who received a 2016 Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in Musical for her portrayal of Eliza Schuyler, also shared a series of photos on Instagram. 'What a ride. 10 years. Eternally grateful. Love you all, thanks for the love. ❤️ @hamiltonmusical #hamilten,' the Doctor Odyssey actress wrote. Cephas Jones, who originated the role of Peggy Schuyler, posted several photos as well. 'Look at where you are… Look at where you started…. TEN YEARS AGO WE OPENED ON BROADWAY. Forever grateful. This show changed my life and gave me a forever family. ❤️,' she wrote. The original Broadway cast of Hamilton reunited earlier this year at the 2025 Tony Awards, where they performed a medley of tracks in honor of its 10th anniversary. With Miranda helming the ship, the cast serenaded audiences with performances of hit songs including 'My Shot,' 'Non-Stop,' 'The Room Where It Happens,' and 'The Schuyler Sisters.' Marvel Might Finally Be Moving on From One of Its Most Hated Characters

Spider-Man might be one of the most beloved heroes of all time, but his comics haven't exactly been at the top of fans' adulation in the past few years—or rather, at least Spidey's primary book, Amazing Spider-Man, hasn't. Mired in controversy for myriad reasons, even as the book has changed hands and moved into new storytelling eras, disgruntled webheads have spent ages pinning what ails the book on a singular character: Paul Rabin, who might make a pretty decent case for the most unpopular character at Marvel Comics right back in 2022 as a shock twist on Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's rekindling of their romantic relationship—something that had broadly remained off-limits in mainline Marvel continuity ever since the aforementioned 'One More Day' storyline in 2007 that saw Mephisto supernaturally erase their marriage from existence in exchange for Aunt May's life—Paul was the son of a mysterious villain called the Emissary from the alternate world of Earth-23321. Hopping through the multiverse battling their version of the Emissary, Mary Jane was forced to send Peter back to Earth-616 without her—only to find when they reunited that multiversal time dilation had led to MJ and Paul spending four years together, adopting two children and falling in love, bringing to an end once more Peter and MJ's relationship. Much to the furor of fans, Paul made his way back to Earth-616 and has continued to be a prominent part of MJ's life ever since. Meanwhile, MJ's life has gotten increasingly hectic recently—after a few issues of mystery, it was confirmed earlier this year that she is the latest host of the Venom symbiote and the star of Al Ewing, Carlos Gomez, and Frank D'Armata's All-New Venom ongoing after months of speculation over who the new Venom could be. Speculation that fans dreaded could include Paul taking on the mantle, despite the fact he's not really had much of a plotline beyond his romantic connection to MJ since the end of the Emissary arc (you know, the one that killed Ms. Marvel so she could immediately get better and be retconned as a mutant to match her MCU iteration—like we said, a series that has been mired in controversy these past few years!). Irritation with Paul's arc remained at a fever pitch: if he could be the new Venom, then he was going to stick around for the foreseeable future and become even more important in the tangled web of Spider-friends, foes, and frenemies. And if he wasn't, he wasn't really being given much to do narratively other than, in the eyes of fans yearning to see MJ and Peter back together again, exist as a human-shaped doorstop preventing that from happening. All that brings us to today's All-New Venom #9, which climaxes with a conversation between MJ and Paul that has been brewing for a long time in the background of the series. Stressed by both MJ's current life as Venom and the rigors of acting as guardians for Eddie Brock's estranged son, Dylan, Paul attempts to apologize to MJ for being part of the reason she bonded with the symbiote in the first place and the resentment they've both felt at the situation (especially, in Paul's case, MJ hiding her identity as Venom from him for a while). Wanting to commit to their relationship, Paul tells her he loves her… only for MJ to tell him that she's done with trying to make their struggling relationship work, ending the issue by breaking up with him. There'll be no popping bottles for Spider-Man fans just yet, however. Even if Paul and MJ's relationship really is over and the final pages of All-New Venom #9 aren't a cliffhanger fakeout, things are not exactly peachy between MJ and Peter Parker right now, either. Amazing Spider-Man #9, also out this week from Joe Kelly, Michael Dowling, and Marte Gracia, picks up a few weeks after the prior issue saw Peter get his ass handed to him by a mysterious armored entity known only as Hellgate. Nursing an injured leg, the issue details that Peter has grown distant from those in his life and his duties as Spider-Man, focusing on his work at Rand Enterprises rather than crime-fighting or even talking to Aunty May and his current girlfriend, Shay Marken. Just as All-New Venom #9 did this week, the issue climaxes with MJ having an awkward, long-awaited conversation. Appearing outside Peter's apartment on Aunt May's behalf, the tone is frosty between her and Peter, even before MJ finally reveals to him that she is the new host of Venom. Instead of being shocked or surprised, or even reacting much at all, Peter turns his back on her and slams his door shut, telling MJ that she and Venom deserve each other. Womp womp. Spider-Man may not be getting an MJ and Peter romance again any time soon, it seems. Well, outside of the pages of Ultimate Spider-Man… well, until that ends with its 24th issue at the end of this year. Regardless of where Paul goes now in terms of either MJ's or Peter's stories, the relationship drama that has defined much of Peter's messy social circles over and over throughout his long comics history is going to stay messy for now… whether fans want it to be or not.
