NFL exec: Detroit Lions 'have played their way into bigger national television windows'

Yahoo16-05-2025
The Detroit Lions will kick off their annual Thanksgiving game later than usual this year, a move one NFL executive said the league made to get more eyeballs on the game.
"We look at the data where we can to be informed," NFL executive vice president for media distribution Hans Schroeder said. "It told us there's a lot more fans that are home, that are back from wherever they are Thanksgiving morning to be on their couches and being able to watch. So that felt like a really obvious thing from the media perspective."

Traditionally, the Lions have started the NFL's Thanksgiving slate with a 12:30 p.m. kick. The Dallas Cowboys play in the 4:30 p.m. window, and the NFL added a rotating Thanksgiving night game in 2006.

While the Cowboys have typically had the most-watched Thanksgiving game, the Lions-Chicago Bears game last year averaged 37.5 million viewers, a smidge below the Cowboys-New York Giants game (38.8 million).
Schroeder said the league saw a significant spike up in viewership in the Lions-Bears game after 1 p.m.

"I think from 2:30 on that Chicago-Lions game was above 40 million viewers," Schroeder said. "I think the game averaged a little bit over 37 million viewers for the entirety of it. And so when we saw the numbers that broke it down by quarter hour at 12:30, I think it was in the mid-20s and maybe climbed to the higher-20s by 12:45, we just saw, hey, it was at a much higher level from 1 o'clock on."
The Lions played the most-watched games on CBS, Fox, ABC and Amazon last season, team president Rod Wood said in March, and had the second most-watched game on NBC.
As one of the NFL's best, most exciting teams – they went a franchise-record 15-2 and led the league in scoring last year – NFL vice president for broadcast planning Mike North said the Lions were an easy choice for primetime and national-TV games this season.

The Lions play two Monday, two Sunday and one Thursday night game this fall, plus have games on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Eight of their nine road games are currently scheduled for 4:25 p.m. or later starts, and the ninth, their season finale against the Bears, is TBD like all Week 18 games.

The Lions play seven 2024 playoff teams on the road this fall: The Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings and Packers. Their other road opponents, the Bears and Cincinnati Bengals, also are playoff contenders.
"It's not just about do we think they're going to be better? We don't know. None of us know," North said. "But our broadcast partners do. And so when we meet with all the broadcast partners at the beginning of this process and they make their list of, 'Hey, here's some of the games and some of the teams that we'd most be interested in,' obviously you've got your healthy dose of Dallas and Kansas City on there, but a definite representation, Lions, Washington, Denver, teams that have played their way into bigger national television windows.
"And so that's why you do find more of those teams being more represented. Not just cause we think they're going to be better, but because our broadcast partners are eager to showcase them in big windows."
As for the later Thanksgiving kick, Schroeder said the Lions were all in favor of moving the start time back to give fans more time to get home or to Ford Field after Detroit's Thanksgiving parade.

"I think they fully embraced moving that kick back till 1 o'clock as well," Schroeder said. "It works better locally, it definitely works better from the fans watching around the rest of the country so we love that as a win-win situation that's hopefully better for football fans everywhere."

YouTube Unveils Broadcasters For Platform's First-Ever Live NFL Game

On Tuesday, YouTube announced the broadcast talent for its first-ever live NFL game. The Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs will meet at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil on Sept. 5. Sports media veteran Rich Eisen, who is expected to once again appear on ESPN platforms following the company's recent acquisition of NFL Network, will serve as the play by play caller for the Week 1 matchup. It's the NFL's second consecutive year playing a regular season game in Brazil. Eisen will be joined by analyst and Super Bowl XXXIV champion Kurt Warner. Stacey Dales and YouTuber Donald De La Haye, who is also known as Deestroying, will both serve as sideline reporters for the free exclusive broadcast on the video platform, which has experienced a rise in recent years as a sports programming destination for media networks, leagues and teams. Deestroying, a former player at Central Florida, boasts more than 6.3 million subscribers on YouTube where he's documented his journey of trying to become an NFL kicker. He played for the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas over the last two seasons but was plagued by recurring injuries. Rules expert Terry McAulay will also join the YouTube broadcast. Meanwhile, sports media personality Kay Adams, who hosts the daily 'Up & Adams Show' on FanDuel TV, will host the on-site show in Brazil with Heisman Trophy winner and analyst Cam Newton, a three-time Pro Bowler and NFL Most Valuable Player in 2015. At the NFL Network's studios in Los Angeles, Brandon Marshall — a six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver across 13 seasons in the NFL — will moderate the conversation around the game in South America. He will be joined by analysts Derek Carr, who retired in May after an 11-year career mostly with the Las Vegas Raiders, and Tyrann Mathieu, a former standout defensive back at LSU and Super Bowl champion. Fantasy football analyst Peter Overzet will also provide commentary and analysis for the regular season game, which will feature Colombia singer Karol G as the halftime performer during the first-ever live NFL game on YouTube.

Colts All-Pro talks team's frustrating quarterback situation after Daniel Jones earns starting job

Indianapolis Colts All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson was selected No. 6 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft and has been through all of the ups and downs when it comes to the quarterback position. Andrew Luck, Jacoby Brissett, Brian Hoyer, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, Nick Foles, Gardner Minshew, Anthony Richardson and Joe Flacco each started at least one game since Nelson entered the league. So, when the Colts announced on Tuesday that Daniel Jones would be the Week 1 starter over Richardson, who was supposed to be the future of the franchise, fans could understand Nelson's frustration. "I would say so. I think I'd be lying if I said it wasn't," Nelson said when asked whether the lack of consistency had been frustrating to him, via The Athletic. "You look around the league and see just the consistency of having Patrick Mahomes or a quarterback behind you that's been the franchise player for years and years and years, and getting to build that chemistry with that quarterback year after year is something that there is an advantage to when it comes to O-line play. So, to answer your question, yeah." Luck's abrupt retirement before the start of the 2019 season appeared to leave the Colts without a plan at quarterback. The franchise has used veterans to plug the hole but nothing has really worked. The Colts have made the playoffs twice since 2018. Richardson, Ehlinger and Jacob Eason were among the team's quarterback draft picks. The team selected former Notre Dame standout Riley Leonard in the sixth round this year but he wasn't a true option to start in Week 1 this season. "Since we signed Daniel, we knew that this was going to be a big decision for (head coach Shane Steichen) and the front office to make," Nelson added. "And nothing really changes for us. We're still going to come to work, do our jobs, still support both guys. But it's nothing completely new to us."

Breaking down the 10 Detroit Lions rookie performances vs. Dolphins

As the preseason rolls onward, the Detroit Lions are going to use every chance that they can get to evaluate the backend of their roster. Once again, the team's 2025 rookie class impressed. A total of 10 first-year players suited up in the preseason matchup against the Miami Dolphins, and many of them made quite the case for a roster spot once the regular season begins. Undrafted wide receiver Jackson Meeks put on a show for the second week in a row. The rookie who played for Georgia and Syracuse made the first reception of the game and went on to finish the day with a team-high 93 yards as well as a touchdown. He was used heavily on special teams as well, taking the field for nearly half of the unit's snaps. He did make one rookie mistake, getting flagged for an illegal shift later in the game. Third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa also had himself a day. The Michigan native was another big contributor on offense, hauling in four receptions for 41 yards and a trip to the endzone. He had some opportunities that were missed as well, including dropping an overthrown pass from Kyle Allen and having a first-down reception called back due to an illegal forward pass penalty. Dominic Lovett wasn't as productive on offense as he was in the previous preseason outings. His biggest contribution in this game came on special teams as a gunner. In the third quarter, he scooped up the ball off of a muffed punt by the Dolphins and returned it within a few yards of the endzone—although you aren't allowed to advance a muffed punt. Zach Horton got a significant amount of time on offense, taking the field for over 70% of the team's snaps. He displayed even more versatility than he has in the other preseason games, being used as an in-line tight end, fullback, slot receiver, and even lining out wide on a few plays. He caught his first two passes of his career, totaling 15 yards. He, too, couldn't escape the eyes of the referees, and was called for a holding penalty that negated a big run from Craig Reynolds. With many new faces in Detroit's secondary, undrafted cornerback Tyson Russell didn't make much of an impact as he had the week prior, but still recorded three tackles. Offensive lineman Mason Miller made the move from tackle to guard in this game, most likely due to the plethora of injuries that Detroit has in that position group right now. He played much better than he had earlier in the preseason, and even earned a shoutout from the broadcast crew for his blocking on long run from Jacob Saylors. Undrafted rookies Ian Kennelly and Keith Cooper both were named starters for this game and played on defense for a majority of Detroit's snaps. Cooper flashed some positional versatility, playing both as an interior defensive lineman and edge rusher. Wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James had a quiet day, being targeted once but not recording any stats. Fan-favorite Ahmed Hassanein only played 10 snaps for Detroit before sustaining an injury that will cause him to miss some time this season. The following draft picks did not play: Tyleik Williams, Tate Ratledge, Miles Frazier (PUP), Dan Jackson (IR)
