Nets rookies' early problem arises again in Summer League loss to Knicks
Tuesday night did nothing to allay those fears. If anything, it only amplified them.
Brooklyn's 97-93 summer league loss to the Knicks — dropping them to 0-3 in Las Vegas — put those problems on display.
It wasn't just the inability by the Nets to hit 3-pointers that was vexing. It was their unwillingness to even take them.
The Nets finished just 5-for-25 from deep, while the Knicks went 10-for-38.
With Nets coaches prodding their young team to get up at least 40 attempts even in a shortened summer league tilt, it was timidity that won't go over well.
'I think a little too much hesitation,' said Brooklyn assistant Steve Hetzel, who is coaching summer league. 'Our philosophy is let it fly. We come out here, we want to shoot 40-plus in a 40-minute game, and we're not getting to that number (Tuesday). I thought (Sunday) we did. The bottom line for us, it's not whether it goes in or we miss, it's the attempt. And we did hesitate too much.'
That's going to be a huge factor in determining just how successful this record crop of five first-round rookies ends up being.
Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf combined for 13 points on 5-of-21 shooting Tuesday against the Knicks, but most concerning was the fact they attempted just three 3-pointers, missing them all.

'What the coaches have told us, try to get as many 3-pointers as we can. The most important thing for us is to get [3s] after a paint touch or out of transition, wide open. But yeah, we want to shoot a lot of 3s, and we can do it better. It's, as I said, part of the process,' said Saraf. 'We need to make adjustments, me and all the other guys. And we will do it.'
Granted, Traore finished with just two points in 19:13, taking a hard fall and having his back tighten up on him.
The French rookie will be held out Wednesday against Orlando (7:30 pm Eastern), as will Saraf.

Meanwhile, lottery pick Egor Demin and first-rounder Danny Wolf were rested against the Knicks, as were two-way players Tyson Etienne and Tosan Evbuomwan.
Those four will all play against the Magic.
But on Tuesday, Brooklyn missed their offense.
Knicks guard Tyler Kolek tormented Brooklyn in the pick-and-roll, especially early on.
He had 23 of his 25 points in the first half to put the Nets in a 41-39 hole at intermission.
The deficit grew to double digits at 66-56 with 1:26 left in the third on an Anton Watson 3. The Nets couldn't mount a comeback.
Drew Timme was Brooklyn's only reliable offense, coming on late to finish with a team-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Caleb Daniels and Quincy Olivari — making his summer league debut after being on a two-way last season with the Lakers — each added 16.

NBA Bulls sign Japanese guard Kawamura
Japanese point guard Yuki Kawamura has signed a contract with the Chicago Bulls after a strong NBA Las Vegas Summer League performance, the team announced on Saturday. The 24-year-old who made his NBA debut last season with Memphis played five games for the Bulls team in Vegas and averaged 10.2 points, 6.2 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals a game. Kawamura delivered a team-best 31 assists, second-most by any Bulls Summer League player since at least 2013, according to the club, and was one of only three players to average at least six assists and two steals in Summer League play. Last season, Kawamura averaged 1.6 points and 0.9 assists over 22 games off the bench for Memphis, with a best showing of 12 points, five rebounds and five assists against Dallas on April 13. To make room on the roster, the Bulls released guard Jahmir Young. Before coming to the NBA, Kawamura played five seasons in Japan's B League, the first campaign for San-en NeoPhoenix and the rest for Yokohama B-Corsairs with career averages of 16.7 points, 7.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds. Kawamura played for the Japan in last year's Paris Olympics, where he ranked third overall with 20.3 points a game and shared third with 7.7 assists per contest -- making him the only Paris Olympian to average 20 points and seven assists. js/rcw

Nuggets' Cam Johnson speaks on Nets, head coach Jordi Fernandez
The Brooklyn Nets made one of the most surprising moves of the 2025 NBA offseason when they traded forward Cam Johnson to the Denver Nuggets for forward Michael Porter Jr. Brooklyn traded Johnson away for a player that can be in the starting lineup for next season along with a 2032 first-round pick, but Johnson believes in the Nets and head coach Jordi Fernandez. "I have so much respect for that coaching staff in Brooklyn. I really appreciated him. I really love playing for Jordi. I think Jordi has a tremendously bright future in this league," Johnson said during his introductory press conference with the Nuggets. Johnson played for Fernandez during the 2024-25 season when Brooklyn finished with a lowly 26-56 record, but Fernandez has been receiving praise from many around the NBA for his coaching prowess. "I think Brooklyn has a bright future, too. Obviously, I I'll keep up with them," Johnson continued. "You guys understand this by now, like the NBA, once you're in it, you you develop those relationships. They don't just leave when you get traded, they don't just disappear. Those are my guys for sure." Johnson came to the Nets during the 2022-23 season as part of the trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns after Brooklyn decided to end the era led by Durant and Kyrie Irving. Brooklyn saw Johnson evolve his game to the point that Denver believed that trading for Johnson was part of what they needed to do for the team to pursue a title while Nikola Jokic is still in his prime. Johnson has always spoken positively about the Nets and what the organization is doing under Fernandez and general manager Sean Marks, but it's another thing when he is saying the same things in front of the media that covers the Nuggets. Johnson had the best season of his career last season for Brooklyn and yet, he looks back on his time with the franchise fondly. Preview: Wizards finish Summer League against Knicks on Saturday
The Washington Wizards play the New York Knicks on Saturday in their final NBA Summer League game. Here is the preview. Game Info When: Saturday, July 19 at 3:30 p.m. ET Where: Cox Pavilion, Las Vegas, NV How to watch: Monumental Sports Network or NBA TV What to watch for Washington heads into their fifth Summer League game with a 1-3 record. Considering that the Wizards didn't really play many of their top draft picks of the last two years like Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, Keyshawn George, Tre Johnson and Will Riley among others … I guess it's not THAT surprising that the Wizards gave the Jazz their first win of the Summer League season on July 16. From the Wizards' standpoint, they will likely stay the course when playing the Knicks. I don't see them playing the draft picks extended minutes, and I doubt the Knicks, also 1-3, will either. So let's just enjoy one more game of Summer League basketball until at least EuroBasket in late August.
