Jay Slater's cause of death explained as coroner shares ruling
Jay, 19, was found dead in a Tenerife ravine last year, sparking a massive, weeks-long search across the island that saw rescuers scour dozens of miles after his disappearance in summer 2024.
An inquest into the circumstances surrounding his death has heard heart-wrenching testimonies from family members and acquaintances who assisted in the search and recovery efforts, with the proceedings at Preston Coroner's Court concluding today with a verdict from the presiding coroner.
Dr James Adeley determined that Jay "died an accidental death" after falling from a height into the Juan López ravine in Buenavista del Norte. The coroner concluded that he had fallen approximately 20 to 25 metres to his death while trying to descend the ravine, resulting in skull trauma from which he would have "died instantly", reports the Mirror.
He stated: "Jay fell at a particularly dangerous area in difficult terrain. He fell approximately 20 to 25 metres, suffering skull fractures and brain trauma from which he would have died instantaneously. Jay Dean Slater died an accidental death.
"This is a tragic death of a young man."
The doctor added: "There was no third party involved."
Dr Adeley suggested that contributing factors to the fall may have included inappropriate clothing, lack of sleep and mountain training, as well as potential after effects of drugs he had consumed.
He pointed out that on the night of June 16, 2024, and in the days following, there was "every indication" that Mr Slater's friends, who were with him on holiday, were worried about him, made efforts to locate him, and took care of his well-being.
The inquest had previously been informed that Jay was officially identified by his finger and palm prints as his body was "mummified" when found. Jay was holidaying on the Spanish island and had been to the NRG music festival at the Papagayo nightclub in the resort of Playa de las Americas on June 16, 2024 (Image: LancsLive)
The post-mortem examination revealed that his body had undergone "extensive mummification" due to exposure to the intense sun for several weeks.
Dr Adeley stated that the evidence indicated that no other person was involved in the death and there was nothing to suggest Mr Slater had been threatened, assaulted, coerced, or feared for his safety.
The coroner told Mr Slater's family, who were present in court, that he hoped the "examination of facts rather than conjecture" during the proceedings had brought them some solace.
Earlier at the hearing on Friday, Mr Slater's tearful mother, Debbie Duncan, paid homage to her son, stating: "He was very loved and our hearts are broken," Ms Duncan said.
"Our lives will never be the same without Jay in it."

'Racist' first-class passenger threatened to gang rape air hostess after binge
A wealthy recruitment chief broke down in tears as he was jailed for 15 months after unleashing vile death threats at cabin crew following a champagne bender on an eight-hour flight. Salman Iftikhar, 37, was travelling first class when he told the air hostess she would be dragged from her hotel room, gang raped and set ablaze on the Virgin Atlantic flight from London Heathrow to Lahore. Another passenger, who captured a brief video of one of Iftikhar's 100 tirades, can be heard saying 'holy s--t' as Iftikhar repeatedly brands the air hostess a racist and declares: "You called me a p-ki in front of everybody." Iftikhar was travelling with his wife and three children at the time of the mid-air mayhem at 39,000ft on February 7, 2023, Isleworth Crown Court heard, reports the Mirror. "Mr Iftikhar was seen drinking champagne at the onboard bar, where he was talking to cabin crew," said prosecutor Abdul Kapadia. "During the defendant's first meal service, the defendant was seen helping himself to ice, leaning over bar he was drinking at, and taking ice with his hands. "When told to stop, the defendant became irate, and started to film cabin crew with his phone, telling them: 'Do not tell me what to do you bitch'." When asked by the cabin crew to return to his seat, he then said: "'Don't tell me what to do you racist f--king bitch. I know where you are from in Cardiff.'" The pilot was then alerted, and switched on the seat belt lights, which Ifitkhar blamed on the stewardess again, calling her a "f*****g b***h". Mr Kapadia stated: "The defendant's behaviour became worse. The cabin crew discussed a diversion to Turkey. The defendant was informed of this possible diversion, to which he replied: 'I don't care. F**k it, go to Turkey. I have contacts.' The defendant then sat down, but his aggressive behaviour continued. His wife was ashamed. His three children were also on-board, and other crew members were called to assist, but the defendant continued shouting and swearing. "He was slurring his words, with his voice raised. He shouted at the cabin crew: 'Do you know who I am?' The defendant's wife went to the food bar and tried to talk to cabin crew, but the defendant pushed his wife away, and shouted at her not to talk to crew. A crew member stabilised the wife's arm to prevent her from falling when she was pushed. "The defendant then got up, and threatened to fight the cabin crew. He grabbed one flight attendant, named Tommy Merchant, and told him to shut up and go away. He told Mr Merchant: 'Do you know who I am? F**k off. You should know who I am. Come on you heard me. Let's go right now. Staff tried to calm the defendant down. The defendant was asked if there was anything the cabin crew could do." But then, the court heard Iftikhar leaned forward and grabbed the woman's hand and squeezed it before calling her a "f*****g white Welsh c**t". Mr Kapadia added: "The defendant also threatened to blow up the floor of the Avari Lahore Hotel, where the cabin crew were due to stay. The defendant knew the specific hotel, but also the hotel room numbers, and threatened the cabin crew with this. He told [the stewardess]: 'You will be dead on the floor of your hotel'." 'Iftikhar shouted at [her] and said: 'The white sheep sh*****g b***h will be dead. The floor of your hotel will be blown up and it will disappear. He told [her]: 'You will be dragged by your hair from your room and gang raped and set on fire'. The defendant said this while his three young children were crying and pleading for him to stop." "The hotel details proved to be accurate, and [the victim] was forced to stay there overnight, unable to sleep," Mr Kapadia revealed. Mr Kapadia explained that when the aircraft touched down in Pakistan, no measures were taken against Iftikhar, but he was eventually detained at his €1M detached property in Iver, Bucks, on March 16, 2024. The victim appeared in court alongside her sister, who is also a Virgin Atlantic flight attendant, both wearing their uniforms. She revealed how she was forced to take 14 months off work in a victim impact statement read to the court. She said: "I am a strong brave, happy stewardess, and loved my job. I am well known within the company. I have been flying with Virgin Atlantic for 37 years. I was working when all flights were grounded on 9/11, and I've even flown into a warzone. But this incident has broken me. "I was doing everything in my power to protect passengers and the crew from him. I felt exposed and vulnerable, especially as we were 39,000 feet in the air. There was nowhere for me to go. "Never in my entire career flying for 37 years have I not been sure what to do. I have had the best career in the world for 37 years. But he has taken that away from me." Iftikhar, from Iver, Buckinghamshire, pleaded guilty to making threats to kill and racially aggravated harassment in connection with the cabin crew member. He was acquitted of assault by beating and threats to kill regarding Mr Merchant. Defence barrister Ben Walker-Nolan claimed Iftikhar was experiencing 'amnesia blood loss', which played a part in what occurred. Iftikhar has six prior convictions stemming from 15 offences, including common assault in 2004 and drink driving in 2008. Relatives broke down in tears as Ms Recorder Annabel Darlow KC sentenced him for the "appalling incident". His LinkedIn profile shows he is director and founder of recruitment company Staffing Match. In a statement, a spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic said: "The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our top priority, and we take a zero-tolerance approach to any disruptive or abusive behaviour on board our aircraft. "We will always work closely with the relevant authorities and will not hesitate to seek prosecution for those individuals that cause disruption onboard through unacceptable behaviour. "We're incredibly grateful to [the victim] and our cabin crew onboard who dealt with this distressing situation in a calm, courageous and professional manner. "We are proud of [the victim] for her bravery in court and we will continue to offer her our full support." Missing woman found dead with her ‘clothes ripped off' in man's shed, court hears
The trial opened at Manchester Crown Court this week MURDER PROBE Missing woman found dead with her 'clothes ripped off' in man's shed, court hears A MISSING woman was found dead with her clothes 'ripped off' in a man's shed, a court has heard. The body of Mariann Borocz, 55, was found by cops behind the home of suspect Christopher Barlow on Pedder Street, Manchester on Christmas Eve last year. 4 Mariann Borocz's body was found in December last year 4 The trial into her death opened at Manchester Crown Court this week Credit: MEN Media The trial opened at Manchester Crown Court this week. The court heart that Mariann was seen on CCTV at a convenience store nearby just days before her body was discovered. Barlow, 60, was seen next to the victim in the store and appeared to buy cans of cider. Prosecutor James Bourne-Arton KC said: 'This is the last time she is seen alive. read more in news CAR RAMPAGE Moment driver ploughs into pedestrian hours after being released from prison 'The next time she was seen by someone other than the defendant was on December 21 when she was found dead in the defendant's shed. 'Her body was naked, her clothes had been cut or ripped off and placed in a nearby bin.' Barlow, who wore a plain grey top, grey trousers and glasses in the dock, confirmed that he was the man seen in the footage. The prosecutor continued: 'He said she had asked him for £1, and he had given her £10. 'He said that she had then walked off and not come down Pedder Street. 'A quick search of the property was carried out and during this search the defendant said he did not own a mobile phone and did not have access to the shed in his back yard, which he says he never uses.' Three charged with murder after boy, 19, stabbed to death in Powerleague football car park Cops then combed through Barlow's property, where they made the grim discovery. Mr Bourne-Arton added: 'A key to the padlock on the shed was found on the key ring in the possession of the defendant. 'In the shed the deceased's body was found, the body was naked, and she was obviously dead." The prosecutor said that 'other than a red mark on her neck there were no obvious signs of injury' and that at this point Barlow was rearrested on suspicion of murder. He said Ms Borocz's clothes 'which appear to have been ripped off' were found in a nearby bin, along with her phone and handbag containing her passport and bank card. Elsewhere in the house a sock was found on an ironing board that was found to contain Ms Borocz's DNA, while police also found a pair of scissors and a knife in the main bedroom. Mr Bourne-Arton highlighted three possible causes of Mariann's death - asphyxia, hypothermia or deprivation of food and water. But Mr Bourne-Arton said: 'We do not think it is likely that she was locked in that shed alive, given the surrounding circumstances.' Barlow denies murder and the lesser charge of manslaughter. The trial continues. 4 Mariann Borocz was last seen in a convenience store on December 14

Villarreal fans decry Thomas Partey's proposed signing as club's 'darkest day'
News that the former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is poised to join Villarreal has roiled fans of the Spanish club, with hundreds signing a petition urging the club to halt what has been described as the 'darkest day in the club's history'. Partey appeared in a London court on Tuesday, charged with five counts of rape relating to two women, and a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences are said to have taken place in 2021 and 2022 when Partey was playing for Arsenal. Partey's lawyer has said he denies all the charges. Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday, and the chief magistrate told the court he understood that the 32-year-old would soon be moving to Spain. Villarreal have agreed to sign the Ghana international on a one-year contract with an option to extend by 12 months. The news came as a shock to Villarreal fans, said Rahul Lakhani, a football journalist and La Liga expert behind the La Liga London account. 'It's rocked the community,' Lakhani said. 'I've had people in my social media responding quite aggressively to me, saying he's innocent until he's proven guilty. But the overarching reaction is that Villarreal fans don't want their names associated with him.' Scores of fans have voiced their opposition to the move on social media, using a hashtag that translates as No to Thomas Partey. Others have passed around contact details for the club's official channels, urging people to complain. As Arsenal gear up to host Villarreal in a friendly on Wednesday, Lakhani described Partey's potential signing as a 'stain' on Villarreal, a club long deeply intertwined with its home town of 50,000 people. 'They're seen as someone who isn't like Real Madrid or Barcelona, or the Big Six,' he said. 'They're the antithesis of that – they're a club that has helped their community a lot, they're seen as a family-run club.' Partey's arrival would probably alter this image, he said: 'Their name is now going to be associated with wanting to sign someone who has five [rape] charges over his head, rather than being known as a club that plays good football or punches above their weight.' More than 800 people have signed a petition that describes the move as a 'slap in the face' to the club's supporters and 'all victims of sexual abuse worldwide'. People from Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence outside the Court. Picture: Yui Mok/PA Wire The petition was launched by the online content hub Villarreal Report, which this week said the signing would be 'an act of pure betrayal of the highest order' against the club's supporters and Villarreal's values. 'The darkest day in the club's history is drawing closer by the second,' it said on social media. Villarreal did not respond to a request for comment. Earlier this year, as Partey's contract with Arsenal neared its expiry date, the north London club confirmed they were in talks over a new contract. After they failed to agree a new deal, it emerged that Partey, who has played for Atlético Madrid, Mallorca and Almería, was instead heading to Spain. He was charged days after he left Arsenal, after an investigation that began in 2022. Partey's lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, has previously said he 'denies all the charges against him' and that he welcomed 'the opportunity to finally clear his name'. Some Villarreal fans have embraced the prospective signing, hinting at the deep divisions sown by Partey's expected arrival. 'For Villarreal it's a top signing, I think it's great for the team,' said Borja Jiménez Ortega, who heads the L'Os Groc supporters' club in Madrid. 'I have a lot of confidence in the club.' The view was widely shared among the 60 members of his fans group, he said. 'There's just two or three who don't want him.' Others pointed to the wider message being sent by the club. 'I'm against this signing,' said César Márquez Trabado, the president of the supporters' club Peña Amarilla Villafranca de los Barros. 'It's true that he would fit in very well at Villarreal because he's a player of tremendous quality, but I believe that there are ethical limits that should not be crossed, even if the player has not been convicted of the charges against him.' It was a view shared by many, he said. 'I would say that 90% of fans are against this,' he said. 'Because in the end, the team may improve in the short term. But in the long term, this will do a lot of damage to our image.' — The Guardian
