Bethune-Cookman ready for ACC rematch on the diamond

Miami Herald30-05-2025
Bethune-Cookman University heads into the NCAA Tallahassee Regional with momentum and belief, taking on host Florida State out of the ACC on Friday at 3 p.m. ET at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. The Wildcats (SWAC champions) enter the four-team regional as the No. 4 seed, while the Seminoles are the No. 9 national seed and ranked No. 7 in the latest D1Baseball.com Top 25.
This marks Bethune-Cookman's sixth appearance in the Tallahassee Regional. The Wildcats are winless in 10 previous games, including five losses to Florida State. Head Coach Jonathan Hernandez, fresh off celebrating his daughter's high school graduation, believes this year's squad is different.
"We come into this regional with nothing to lose. That makes us dangerous," Hernandez said. "Nobody expects us to win, but we believe."
The Wildcats' belief is bolstered by a dramatic walk-off win over Florida A&M in the SWAC Championship, where Andrey Martinez's three-run homer capped a 19th come-from-behind victory of the season. Martinez tied the program's single-season home run record (20), and shortstop Jeter Polledo went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the title game.
Florida State (38-14), led by ACC Player and Defensive Player of the Year Alex Lodise, boasts a .315 team batting average and averages nearly eight runs per game. The Seminoles finished runner-up in the ACC and are making their 61st NCAA Tournament appearance.
Bethune-Cookman will need another inspired performance to challenge the Seminoles and snap their postseason drought.
Our Vaughn Wilson will be at the game embedded with the Wildcats. Stay with HBCU Gameday for updates, details and behind-the-scenes access with Bethune-Cookman University.

Manchester United told Real Madrid could meddle in midfielder deal

Real Madrid are on the hunt for a new defensive midfielder, as they seek to finally sign a Toni Kroos replacement. They hold a strong interest in Manchester City and Spain superstar Rodri Hernandez, but in fact, it could be another Premier League pivot that they make a move for. That is the opinion of former Premier League striker Troy Deeney, who has told talkSPORT (via CaughtOffside) that Real Madrid could look to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton next summer – provided that Manchester United fail to sign him from Brighton during the current transfer window. 'I think United have to get Baleba this window, or they don't get him. If he has another good season, I do think other teams with Real Madrid and the like will come in and go 'Bosh, we'll have him'. I think if Man United want him…if I'm Ruben Amorim I'm kind of bullish on that. I'd be saying 'get this deal done because then I can get you into Europe'. If they can sign him, he can move them up 10 spaces (in the Premier League standings).' Image viaBaleba would fit Real Madrid's transfer policy to a tee It's clear that Real Madrid want a new defensive midfielder, but they are unlikely to get anyone in before this summer's transfer window closes at the start of September. 2026 will almost certainly be the time to them to strike, and if Rodri is not available at that time, Baleba would be an excellent alternative. At 21, he would be a perfect fit for Real Madrid's transfer policy of signing younger players to become establish stars at the Santiago Bernabeu. They would also not be shy to pay Brighton's asking price for the Cameroon international, so it will be interesting to see whether he is someone that enters their thoughts going into 2026.

CBS Sports predicts Clemson football's bowl game and CFP fate entering 2025 season

The Clemson Tigers made a dramatic return to the College Football Playoff last season after a four-year absence. On the same day Clemson lost a late 14-10 fourth-quarter lead to rival South Carolina to suffer its third loss of 2024, the Tigers got an 11th-hour pardon when Syracuse pulled a stunning upset of No. 6 Miami to send Dabo Swinney's team to the ACC Championship Game for a matchup against SMU. The Tigers memorably defeated the Mustangs on Nolan Hauser's 56-yard field goal, an ACC title game record, as time expired in a thrilling 34-31 victory that sent them to the expanded 12-team playoff. While Clemson would fall to the Texas Longhorns in the first round of the CFP to finish 10-4, the Tigers now enter 2025 as a bonafide national championship contender with one of the most talented rosters in the nation. They're ranked No. 6 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and No. 4 in the preseason AP poll. Don't expect Clemson to be absent from the 12-team playoff field come December, says CBS Sports. In the outlet's preseason bowl projections on Thursday, analyst Brad Crawford laid out his prediction for where quarterback Cade Klubnik and company will land in the 2025 postseason picture. CBS Sports has Clemson repeating as ACC champions and being the No. 3 seed in the playoff behind No. 1 seed Texas and No. 2 Penn State. Crawford projects the Tigers to meet either the Alabama Crimson Tide or Boise State Broncos in the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day. "Dabo Swinney's right -- he might have a roster capable of churning along from beginning to end without a loss this season. That's certainly a high-end projection for a program trying to get back to the playoff with quality wins in and outside of the ACC, but with a Heisman candidate at quarterback and potentially three first-rounders on defense, the iron is hot." --Brad Crawford, CBS Sports. For Klubnik, his first college start came in Clemson's 31-14 loss to No. 6 Tennessee in the 2022 Orange Bowl. He was 30-of-54 with 320 yards through the air while rushing 20 times for 51 yards and a touchdown. Clemson opens the 2025 season against the LSU Tigers at Memorial Stadium in prime time on Aug. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ABC. LSU is ranked No. 9 in both the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25.
